President Ho Chi Minh was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Ilung, Minister of Education, Nguyen Van Huyen and Vice Minister attached to the Premier's office, Phan My. 2. In the course of his visit to Indonesia, President Ho Chi Minh and his party visited several places of historical and cultural interest; he visited amongst others the Asia-Africa building, the Borobudur, the Mendut, the Prambanan, cultural objects in Bali and other important objects such as' the Nebun Raya in Bogor, the Institute of Technology in Bandung and the rehabilitation centre in Solo. 3. President Ho Chi Minh took the opportunity to have a broad and serious exchange of views with President Soekarno on the interne.tional situation and on matters of mutual interest to the two countries. This exchange of views took place in a cordial atmosphere. On that occasion President Ho Chi Minh was accompanied by deputy primo Minister Pham Hung, Minister of Education Nguyen Van Hiiyen and v Zice Minister attached to the premier's office of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Phan My, while President Soekarno was accompanied by Prime Minister Djuanda, first deputy Prime Minister Hardi, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Subandrio and Chief of the Asian-Pacific Division of the Foreign Ministry Sudjono. 4- As a result of the foregoing the two Presidents expressed their conviction that the principles initiated by the Asian-African Conference in Bandung in 1955 could serve as a firm basis for achieving a sphere of co-operation between nations in strengthening permanent world peace. Relations between states and nations based on those principles would help to remove the atmosphere of suspicion and fear and to create the atmosphere of mutual understanding and mutual trust, a conditio sine qua non for the success of the effort to achieve peaceful co-existence. JOINT COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY PRESIDENT SOEKARNO AJND PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH ~

At the invitation of the' President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Soekarno, the President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam Dr. Ho Clii Minh, visited Indonesia from February 27th to March 8th, 1959.

President Ho Chi Minh was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Ilung, Minister of Education, Nguyen Van Huyen and Vice Minister attached to the Premier's office, Phan My.

2. 5. The Presidents were of the opinion that efforts should "be intensified to bring about a reduction in armaments and to prohibit the production, experimentation and use of nuclear and thermonuclear weapons. The two Presidents feel dutybound to participate in tho efforts to save mankind from the menace of a new world war which would be disastrous for humanity. In this connection the two Presidents appealed to the countries -concerned ünd to world opinion to bring about such armament reduction and prohibition.

6. Furthermore the two heads of states expressed their opinion that the policy of forming military blocs would only result in increasing international tensions and they expressed their resolve to continue and to strengthen within their power and in their respective spheres their efforts towards the maintenance of world peace and the promotion of mutual under-standing between the nations in the world.

7. The problems of dependent peoples and the consequences of colonial domination and exploitation of peoples which endanger world peace were also seriously discussed by the two Presidents during the exchange of views. The two Presidents expressed their readiness to support the struggle for independence of all colonised peoples. They were happy to note that since the Asian-African Conference in Bandung in 1955 a number of Asian and African states had been successful in their struggle for independence. The two Presidents were of the opinion that colonialism and imperialism -whatever may be their reason, form or manifestation - must be eliminated,

8. On the occasion of the exchange of views as well as in his remarks in public, President Ho Chi Minh continued to stress the support of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam for the struggle of the Indonesian people to restore Irian Barat into the territory of the Republic of Indonesia,

9. , Regarding the reunification of Vietnam, the 'two presidents were of the opinion that the provisions contained in the Geneva • agreements of 1955 should be used in settling that problem,

10. Both Presidents examined the general problem of the partition of one nation into separate states. They expressed the opinion that these parts should be reunified on the basis of peace and democracy which would provide complete happiness and prosperity to the nation concerned and which would constitute a positive contribution towards world peace.

11. Furthermore, during his visit, President Ho Chi Minh took the opportunity to meet with representatives of political, cultural and scientific circlos as well as to establish direct and cordial contacts with the Indonesian people In this connection both parties would endeavour to promote stage by stage co-operation in the economic

and cultural fields between the two states. President Ho Chi Minh expressed his gratitude and thanks to President Scekarno, the Indonesian Government and people for the most warm and cordial reception extended to him during his visit to Indonesia.

12. The two Presidents agreed, that the visit of President IIo Chi Minh and his party was very fruitful and strengthened still further the brotherly and friendly relations already existing between the Indonesian people and the people of Vietnam.

13. President Ho Chi Minh extended an official invitation to President Soekarno to visit the Democratic Republic of Vietnam which was happily and gratefully accepted by President Soekarno.
