2. PhthalatesMainly used as plasticizersadded to plastics.Human-made chemicalsused in the manufacture ofhousehold and industrialproducts such as childrenstoys, infant-care andpersonal-care products, cosmetics, garden hoses, raincoats, adhesives andlubricants. 3. Who is at Risk? Everyone! Mainly infants andtoddlers due to theirmouthing behavior withproducts containingphthalates 4. Health Effects: Immediate Health Effects If SWALLOWED, phthalates is SlightlyToxic If ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN,phthalates is Moderately Toxic If INHALED (SNIFFED OR BREATHEDIN), phthalates is Slightly ToxicLong-term or Delayed HealthEffects This chemical is likely to cause cancer. Allergen Suspected Endocrine Disruptor = Mayinterfere with, mimic or block hormones Development Toxicant = Can interferewith normal development of a fetus orchild Reproductive Toxicant = Can harmreproductive system 5. Findings : Phthalates have been shown to be reproductive and developmental toxins and may contribute to what is known as Testicular dysgenesis syndrome -increasing incidence of birth defects of the male reproductive tract such as undescended testis, and lower sperm count While a lot of attention has been focused on the "demasculation" of boys by phthalates, women are not immune to their effects. Phthalates are implicated in premature puberty in girls. Phthalates are endocrine (hormone) disruptors, meaning they interfere with normal brain function Phthalates send signals in the body that could result in Autism, Breast Cancer, Testicular cancer and reduced sperm counts 6. It causes malformation of vital organs andskeletal structure. Rat testis Left = Unexposed Center and right = DEHP exposure during development Rat seminal vesicle Left = Unexposed Right = DEHP exposure during development 7. FindingsPrenatal exposure to phtlalates can cause brain damage: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Adhd)- characterized by either significantdifficulties of inattention or hyperactivity andimpulsiveness or a combination of the two Oppositional Defiant Disorder(ODO)- anongoing pattern of anger guideddisobedience, hostilely defiant behaviortoward authority figures which goes beyondthe bounds of normal childhood behavior 8.
