Sometimes it takes a community-mindedperson on a mission to organize an event.Such is the case with the National Day ofMourning on April 28th and Isabel Smith.
Since her nieces’ tragic death twelve yearsago, Isabel has been like ‘a dog with a bone’ when it comes to educating and talk-ing about work-related deaths and injuries.“She’s never going to be gone,” she says ofher beautiful niece Lindsey who lost herlife in a workplace accident just a few days before starting college. “Its important toget the message out – Be safe, ask ques-tions. You have the right to return homewithout injury at the end of your shift.”
This year, Smith doggedly got behind theBC Schools project to involve students inthe memorial event. Students read pre-typed messages every day over the air at
morning announcements...giving statisticaldata about workplace injuries and deaths. An average of 1100 people in Canada dieevery year on the job. And, did you knowthat the group of workers most likely to beinjured or killed are young workers. In Smith’s opening remarks at the water-
front ceremony, she thanked her union for being a part of the school project alongwith the BCFED, the BC Labour HeritageCentre and WorkSafe BC. FLESS was one
of 93 BC schools enrolled in the projectand students not only attended the memo-rial, but hung posters and spoke aboutworkplace safety during their planning
classes. With over 100 students listening intentlyin a semi-circle around the speakers tent,SAFETY messages and pleas were deliv-ered by: Councillor Kerry Jantz, IsabelSmith, Ramiro Santos Safety CoordinatorFL Sawmill, Debbie Goertz, Lisa KetloFLESS Principal, Joe Jenkinson EndakoMines Safety Coordinator, James CochranFire Chief, Cst James and Father James.

Small towns may lack many of theamenities of larger centers.
And they may lack perfectly pavedsidewalks and a Starbucks on everycorner.
Yet when things go sideways, tall buildings, street lights and shiny store-fronts won’t organize an event or saveyou and yours from freezing water ora senseless personal attack in a neigh- bourhood pub.
In a small town its our sense of com-munity the indelible spirit of individu-als that make living in rural so unique.
A couple of examples worth notingare the ‘feel good story’ about theRCMP jumping in (literally) and res-cuing a dog that had fallen through theice and would eventually have suc-cumbed to exhaustion in the frigidwater. Word of the rescue spread likewildfire and by nightfall had been
shared by thousands on social media.Another example of a courageous indi-vidual was realized several weeks agoat the Royal Canadian Legion when alocal hero thought nothing of steppinginto the middle of a fight, disarming aknife-wielding guy and then providingfirst aid to the victims.
All in a days work… in rural
How about the perseverance of a com-munity to come together in a fundrais-ing effort in support of a young dadseeking life-saving surgery thousandsof miles from home.
Consider the dogged willpower of anindividual to organize an annual eventthat addresses work place safety in thewake of the tragic death of her niece.
Think of the collaborative efforts of ahandful of people in organizing severalfund raisers to assist refugees seeking anew life in Canada.
What of the spirit that drives individu-als to organize programs for Moms &Tots, for slo-pitch, for helping sen-iors, coaching hockey & soccer.
We, in rural think nothing of volun-teering and organizing events that of-ten read as part of the job descriptionof folks in bigger centers.
And at the end of the day, when a vol-unteer is responsible for raising fundsfor a cause or organizing an event, itstheir dogged determination and heartthat drive them, not a paycheque.

An early-morning crowd of 40 folks were onhand Friday, April 15th at Autumn Services.
And when they heard the good news. “...a chequein the amount you asked for…” there was loudapplause and a mix of happy tears and wide smiles.
When MLA John Rustad stopped by Autumn Ser-vices he not only delivered a surprise gift from government but gave words of encouragement to continue the good work in thecommunity.
Rustad advised that when the Senior Advocate Committee members next travel throughout the province, he encouraged the Au-tumn Services executive and membership to put together a presentation detailing the success of the drop-in centre and it’s mean-ingful impact in the community.
The membership, volunteers and executive of Autumn Services look forward to continuing their work delivering programs that bridge the generational gaps, fight isolation and provide social opportunities for seniors and all community members.

When a local couple heard the relentless barking of the neighbour’s dog, they suspected somethingwas amiss. They followed the sound down to a pond where they discovered a dark shape strugglingto stay above water. It was Josie, a 6 month old Bernese Mountain Dog that the neighbours weredog-sitting.
After calling local RCMP for assistance, they pulled a paddle boat to the pond and tried breaking a path through the ice with a pole. The whimpering dog was over 100 feet fromshore and had been struggling for some time. When Cst Ray Dickenson and Sgt Jason Slater arrived on scene they tied a rope to the boat, Ray donned a life jacket, jumped into the boat and hacked his way across to the dog. Josie had been in the water almost an hour and when Ray hauled her into the safety of the boat, she leaned into him for support. The rescue was deemed a huge success and by nightfall the ‘feel-good story’ was on Glob-al TV and thousands shared and liked it on social media. Ray admitted he was fully pre-pared to jump in if Josie had gone under. Josie met her hero that day.

Endako This & That by Audrey Read
For Christmas 2015 I received a gift from my son Bruce & wife Jean....a trip to Prince George to see "LORD OF THE DANCE!" A wonderful, wonderful gift, thank you! My goodness what a great show they put on. And the energy...WOW! If I could muster up a quarter of their energy Icould sure get a lot more work done!
====March 30th I had flowers blooming in my garden, the earliest I think. April 7 I mowed some of the lawn...some parts in the shade still hadsnow! April 9 I planted my sweet peas and was quite surprised how warm the earth is already.====April 11 we got a good rain & then on the 12th a thunderstorm with a lot of hail...the moisture will do the parched earth a world of good...glad Ihad my water tanks ready to catch the rain water.====Got a distressing call this morning, (April 12) my little Great Granddaughter, Paisley is in the Prince George hospital with what they are treating aswhooping cough. She has had her immunization shots thank goodness so hopefully she will have only a very mild case. Why oh WHY aren't peo-ple getting their children immunized? A lot of the horrible childhood diseases were nearly wiped out and now it seems through negligence orwhatever people aren't bothering to take their children for their shots....soon we will be back to square one. How very, very sad.====Had to have a "little talk" with # 10 and #12 steers this morning...today was the day I give them hay and those two little devils decided that theopen gate was just too tempting!. I drove the tractor through the gate on the east end of the corral and turned back just in time to see those twomaking a bee-line for the open gate and freedom beyond...WOW! I didn't know I could move that fast anymore!!! What a pair of disappointedfellows, but just to make it look good they both wandered over to the waterer and started drinking as though that is what they had in mind allalong! Silly characters!====Strong people always have their lives in order. Even when they are sad, and with tears in their eyes, they still manage to say' "Im okay" with asmile.====Every other day Rita Hiatt brings her wagon over and I load it up with silage for her cows, they are really enjoying it and wait eagerly for it. Ritahas been spending several nights out playing "mid wife" to her cows, had a set of twins and the ol' cow decided she only wants one, miserable ol'
bat! But I think Rita is going to win this one, she is being very determined that the cow take both. Good Luck kiddo!====Nick & Fawn Hiatt and three children just got back from a ten day holiday in Mexico, Nick thinks it was not really a good time to go as they all gotsun burnt!
====Boy oh boy! I didn't know there was so much to do to prepare for an auction sale! It will be nice when it is over, in the meantime, I must get allthe transfers ready and signed for all the vehicles etc. Good thing I have a good filing system so I can find all the information.====WOW! Talk about a wind storm on April 18! I had to go into Fraser Lake and on the way home I turned around a corner on Savory Road to findthree trees across the road, no way around them either. I 'phone my neighbour Rita to see if Nick was there but he'd left for home. She calledaround and found that George & Toni-Lynn were either not home or unable to answer the 'phone. Next call went to Art & Jo-Ann who wereheading to our rescue. In the meantime I had called David at YRB who also came! But before either of them arrived Toni-Lynn came bombingalong in her "side by side" and sawed up the trees in no time flat. Art remarked that it was just like a "block party" only everyone forgot to bring aBarBQ! As I neared our cattle guard there was another tree across the road but I managed to get round it! So ends the excitement of Savory Road! All told there were six vehicles waiting in line! The power was out for about five hours and let me tell you I was sure happy when it came back onas I would have had to hook up the fire pump and haul water for the bulls! Not fun!
