McClain Tool & Technology has announced that Tyler Zeman has joined the company as a sales engineer for eastern Missouri and South-ern Illinois.

Zeman, repre-senting the second generation of the Zeman family in the business, has grown up in the industry and recently graduated from Marquette with a degree in Computer Science. He started working with Zeman Holdings in 2004 as a “custodial engineer” (janitor), and has since had experience in service, parts sup-port, marketing and sales.

Twelve-year company vet-eran Chris O’Reilly will contin-ue to cover Kansas and Western Missouri.

In 2014 the com-pany was purchased by Zeman

Holdings, a family firm that owns two other machine tool distributors in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. The oldest one started 85 years ago.

“We are pleased to have Tyler join our team at McClain,” noted

Jeff Zeman, principal of Zeman Holdings. “He has grown up in the business and began working with the St. Louis crew at the first of the year. Between he and Chris we will have our customers well covered.”

“I’m very happy to apply what I’ve learned and bring it to Mc-Clain,” noted Tyler Zeman. “We are committed to 100% customer satisfaction and I am willing to put that to the test - reach me by cell at (314) 422-6441.” Already a Blues fan, Tyler noted that as a long-time Brewers fan he is finding it very hard to remain one in a city that bleeds for their Cardinals.

McClain Tool & Technology specializes in the sale and support of high-performance machinery. It offers CITIZEN Swiss type machine, Miyano multi-axis turn-

ing centers, FFG/DMC machine tools and FANUC EDMs. It serves Kansas, Missouri and Southern Illinois.

With over 25 years in the ma-chine tool industry, McClain Tool & Technology, provides excellence in full-service support including: application engineering, installa-tion and in-plant training.

“Our staff of devoted and highly skilled sales/service mem-bers are the key to our success. At McClain Tool & Technology, we are wholly committed to 100% customer satisfaction. It is not our goal, it is our commitment,” stated Jeff Zeman.

ISM-KC Finishes Year Learning About Energy Industry & Programs; Installs New Officers; Awards Scholarships

ISM-Kansas City, an affiliate of the Institute for Supply Man-agement, ended its year with a meeting on May 17th at the Ash Grove Cement corporate offices in Overland Park, Kansas.

The chapter was recognized by the ISM at its annual conference as a 2015 Affiliate of Excellence Award recipient.

The featured speakers for the meeting were John Carlson, Mgr of Origination & Generation Services and Kevin Brannan, Sr. Product Manager, both of KCP&L.

Carlson gave an energy in-dustry overview covering the mix of energy sources used, demand curves, load profiles and described regional transmission organiza-tions.

Brannan discussed the various energy efficiency programs offered to businesses in Missouri under the Missouri Energy Efficiency Investment Act. These can cover lighting and strategic energy man-agement programs. Standard and custom programs can be developed to fit a business’ situation. It is hoped that a similar program will be available to KCP&L’s Kansas customers in the near future.

In other chapter business offi-cers and directors for the next year were installed (see photo). Outgo-ing president Michelle Burdine, C.P.M., BNSF Railway was recog-nized for her year as president.

College scholarships funded by the chapter were also awarded at the event.

Manufacturing technology orders for April 2016 were down 27.5% from the same month a year ago, according to the latest U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders report compiled by AMT – The

Sluggish Economy Puts Pinch on Manufacturing Technology Orders

Association For Manufacturing Technology. Year to date, orders are down 16.6% compared to the same point in 2015.

“The current conditions for manufacturing technology provid-

ers are a reflection of larger stag-nation in manufacturing and the overall economy – some industries are performing well, and others are struggling,” said AMT President Douglas K. Woods. “Automotive and aerospace, which mitigated the market decline for the last 15 months of the current downturn, continue to hold their own but they aren’t growing. Some industries are growing, such as consumer electronics, firearms, and medical, but those represent only 12 percent of our overall market. Weakness continues in the oil and gas and construction/off-road industries.”

Industry forecasters continue to anticipate an upswing in busi-ness in the fourth quarter; however, the current market downturn was more than forecasters had ex-pected. AMT member companies report strong levels of quotation activity, but longer conversion rates for order placement. Manu-facturing companies are resistant to make investments in capital equipment out of a sense of cau-tion.

These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by compa-nies participating in the USMTO program. This report, compiled by AMT provides regional and nation-al U.S. orders data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment. Analysis of manufac-turing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indica-tor as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.

IMEC (Industrial Machine and Enginering Company), Monett, Missouri, continues to improve its operations. The firm has expanded its offerings for certified weld/leak testing and regularly tests a variety of reservoirs and containers for leaks and weld integrity.

Founded in 1982 by Dan and Charlotte Conner, the firm is a full-service custom manufacturer that focuses on precision sheet metal fabrication, machined parts, assem-blies, powder coating and special machinery. The firm’s just-in-time inventory management programs are also growing.

Today the firm operates in a 45,000-sq.-ft. facility with 40 employees (many with more than 10 years of experience) and a wide range of CNC equipment.

Equipment at the 34-year-old firm includes: CNC laser cutting systems; CNC punches and shears; multi-axis CNC machining/turning centers; a complete QC lab; a pow-der coating line; welding stations (spot, TIG & MIG); and assorted manual equipment.

IMEC serves OEMs in vari-ous industries including: military/defense; energy; industrial equip-ment; electronics; transportation; medical and aerospace.

The firm also has its own nitro-gen generating system that pro-duces nitrogen at 99.99% purity. Nitrogen is used by the firm’s laser cutting systems.

“This additional testing service we offer is another example of how we continually strive to make our operation more efficient and competitive. From dye penetrant testing hydraulic reservoirs to hi-pot testing electrical assemblies, our customers can be confident the parts we make will function as needed” commented Eric Merri-

The St. Louis NTMA Chapter gathered on June 6 for its annual Scholarship Golf Tournament where 102 golfers enjoyed golf lunch and networking at Pevely Farms Golf Club in Eureka, MO.

Past tournaments’ successes allowed the Chapter to award $12,000 to four individuals who are beginning careers in manu-facturing, starting with training at State Technical College of Missouri (Linn, MO), Ranken Techni-cal College (St. Louis) and Southwestern Illinois College (Granite City, IL). This year’s tournament will fund scholarships in 2017 and beyond.

Golf Tournament Sponsor Brian Gesme (Cadco Program and Machine) thanked all sponsors and raffle donors, especially Tournament

Event Sponsor, Federated Insurance. Platinum sponsors included Anders, Chelar Tool & Die, CliftonLarson-Allen, Component Bar Products, Ellison Technologies/Doosan, Homeyer Precision Manufacturing, Microfinish and Okuma. “You load sixteen tons, and what do you get? Another day

older and deeper in debt. Saint Peter don’t you call me ‘cause I

can’t go. I owe my soul to the com-pany store.” (A song by Tennessee Ernie Ford released in 1955.)

Since this is vacation season, we’ll skip the world’s woes and consider a different time in our country’s history.

While disassembling a picture from my late father-in-laws’ general store, we found a May 20, 1915 copy of The Emporia (KS) Gazette that had been used as backing.

One headline concerned a min-ing camp preacher at Sunrise, Wyo-ming, who was warned not to testify in Colorado Mining camp troubles.

The Rev. Daniel S. McCorkle, speaking to the Commission of Industrial Relations, “declared that doctor’s bills at Sunrise were taken out of the worker’s wages.” In one case, he said, “the company’s doctor did not arrive until after a baby was born, but a charge of $25 was de-ducted from the father’s pay check anyway.’

“The mother,” said McCorkle, “declared there was only $5 left to live on that month, after the rent and doctor’s bill were taken out. When the baby was sick and the doctor prescribed caster oil, he would not leave a dose because there was no money to pay for it.”

“At the company’s store, at Sunrise,” he said, “workers who did not trade there were discriminated against, and in one day three differ-ent prices for flour were charged to three different persons. He said this was due to the fact that the clerks were forced to take part of their wages in commissions.”

We don’t know what finally happened in the Sunrise case, but it started us thinking about company towns in the U.S. At their peak there were more than 2,500 such towns, housing about 3% of the U.S. popu-lation.

As would be expected, towns were set up by companies that often had a monopoly in the area and usually involved coal, oil, iron, steel and lumber mills, and later, auto and

One of the first company towns was Pullman, IL, developed in the 1880s just outside of Chicago. It provided housing for some 6,000 employees, plus dependents, and offered markets, a library, churches and entertainment.

Things went well until the eco-nomic panic of 1893 when Pullman had to lower wages, but didn’t lower rents or shop prices. The town was dissolved in 1898.

The Government later said Pull-man’s principles were okay, in that “the firm provided workers with a quality of life otherwise unattainable to them.” But in the end, excessive “paternalism” was blamed for the failure.

Paternalism in those days was thought to be a moral responsibil-ity that would advance society and further the company’s interests.

However, beginning in the late (Continued on next page)

1800s, most companies let architects, landscapers, and city planners make the decisions. By then, industrial-ists were realizing that a prosperous company required a working class living in a sanitary and un-congested area with parks, schools, libraries and roomy houses.

Unfortunately, not all company towns were so well planned and peaceful. When lead was found in southeast Kansas in 1877, two rival mining companies formed their own town sites, Empire City and Galena. Within months Galena had 10,000 residents.

When it was determined that Galena had the major lead vein, miners began leaving Empire City, which then began building an eight-foot-high stockade run-ning a half mile and blocking the main road.

After appealing to the federal government with no response, the Galena mayor formed a posse which tore down and burned the stockade.

According to the Legends of America, “The war between the towns was so bad that the main connect-ing link between the two cities became known as ‘Red Hot Street,’ where feuding became so intense that doc-tors and undertakers began working nights and sleep-

ing during the days.”By the 1920s, company towns were fading away.

Even factory and mine workers were more prosperous and installment buying allowed them to buy automo-biles and radios. Cars meant people didn’t have to live so close to their work places.

While many have a negative view of company towns, West Virginia’s Historical Society had this to say.”It is true that in mining families, coal opera-tors had captive buyers for their goods. However, the availability of trains and mail order products, and the proximity of other local stores did give miners more choice than is often portrayed.”

Regarding the use of “scrip,” this was an easy way to pay miners without keeping large amounts of cash on hand. Some studies show a miner could draw scrip or cash or both, according to the Society.

Finally, despite criticism of the “company stores,” we seem to have created our own “new” versions of them today. In 1987, the song, Domestic Life, has John Conlee singing, “See me mowing my domestic yard. Lord, I owe my soul to Mastercard.”

April U.S. cutting tool con-sumption totaled $173.64 million according to the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI) and AMT (The Association For Manufacturing Technology). This total, as re-ported by companies participating in the Cutting Tool Market Report (CTMR) collaboration, was down 5.7% from March and down 15.0% when compared with the total re-ported for April 2015. The year-to-date total of 2016 was down 10.3% when compared with 2015.

These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals actually reported by the compa-nies participating in the CTMR

program. The totals here represent the majority of the U.S. market for cutting tools.

Steve Stokey, President of USCTI, states “The cutting tool numbers continue to be negative in scenarios, month over month, year over year and year to date. While there is not much good news on the horizon as we head into the typically soft summer months of the business cycle, there is some optimism with the PMI moving over 50, but there is definitely a sense of caution as we move into the next 90 days.”

According to Eli Lustgarten, Senior Vice President at Longbow Securities, “Current headwinds are likely to continue in the near term with some added pressure from relatively flat automotive demand, material weakening in heavy truck production and ongoing significant weakness in coal mining.”

The Cutting Tool Market Report is jointly compiled by AMT and USCTI, two trade associations representing the development, production and distribution of cut-ting tool technology and products. It provides a monthly statement on U.S. manufacturers’ consumption of the primary consumable in the manufacturing process – the cut-ting tool.

Analysis of cutting tool con-sumption is a leading indicator of both upturns and downturns in U.S. manufacturing activity, as it is a true measure of actual production levels.
