    Over the past eight years, Lori Nix (born 1969) has created meticulously detailed modelenvironments and then photographed them--locations within a fictional city that celebrate modernculture, knowledge and innovation.     Im often asked: Why do your photographs look so old? Are you nostalgic? Its quite theopposite: if youre nostalgic, you long for the past, but Ive spent my whole life trying to detachmyself from the past. As a child, back then in the post-war period, I began collecting mentalimages: motifs like the bombed-out buildings in my home-town of Graz. I would watch andobserve war veterans and caretakers, and be amazed by shop windows and steam locomotives.

    As a five-year-old I witnessed brutal scenes of slaughtering, but there was no-one I could talk toabout them. Like knots on a piece of string I stored those images within me, images I could rarelymake head nor tail of. The Italian author Cesare Pavese once referred to the places of ourchildhood as sacred: it is there that as children we experience a piece of the world at first hand,

    just for ourselves and it is only once we are mature that we realise it. My early years gave menot just profound experiences; they also gave me energy and inspiration to pick up on thoseimpressions. Later on I unconsciously searched for, found and photographed the mental imagesof my childhood. I also reconstructed and created images just so I could photograph them. Thesephotographs were particularly helpful in resolving undesirable impressions. They allowed me tosee through what I had not understood and free myself from deeply rooted experiences.

    Becoming aware of things, understanding things past, is not as simple as you think; in fact it is ashard as trying to untie a tightly pulled knot on a piece of string.

    An integral part of the work An Order of Things II, presented by Petra Feriancov in the Czechand Slovak Republic Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale, the catalogue An Order of Things Iforms the prelude, memory, inventory, extension and, above all, systematic organization of thattangible experience, those collections physically arrayed before our eyes, according to criteria theviewer slowly intuits beyond the mute nature of the images. The final pages show the sources

    from which the memories have been extracted, amidst film reels, slides and stacks ofNationalGeographics, ready to be easily transported in the large Ikea shopping bags, while the others,subdivided into chapters of images, form a varied and opaque geography and anthropology ofplaces, persons, objects, flying urban creatures, skies, ruins, sculptures. Visual notations from amore or less recent past, at times surprising, at times banal, that may evoke certain Venetiancharacteristics without ever making explicit reference, except in the chapter "Always the sameplace" that is explicitly devoted to that city. The pigeons of the section "Creator" are not just thecolumbae liviae that throng Piazza San Marco, but a wide range of different feathered species.The sea returns in the collection of seashells "According to Ruskin," since the English critic andartist drew some such specimens on paper in his Venetian palazzo. Venice is therefore theexplicit pivot of cultural memories, but also the fulcrum of mysterious references to a submergedhistory. In this sense the pages dense with amateur snapshots, scientific images, film stills andshifts of words of Feriancov form a fascinating visual archive, but also the challenge of an

    extraordinary historical puzzle.
