3A IT’S DEBATABLE

All zoos should be banned.

We live in a throw-away society.

Social media does more harm than good.

We should be charged according to the amount of rubbish we produce.

We should only fl y in a plane once a year to reduce pollution.

People don’t talk to each other enough anymore.

We should all be vegetarian.

Homework is becoming harmful to students’ education.

Poverty causes crime.

People should be charged to use the internet.

Endangered animals should be kept in captivity.

Global warming isn’t a problem.

We are too dependent on computers.

We shouldn’t use social media to encourage people to give to charity.

The beach originally disappeared thirty years ago in a storm but returned a few days ago when a freak wave washed the sand back ashore. Residents and holiday makers alike are hoping it at least sticks around for the summer.

7A PAST MODALS

Two fathers and their two

sons went fi shing. They each

caught one fi sh to take home

with them. They did not lose

any fi sh, but when they arrived

home they only had three fi sh.

How could that be?

A man fell off a 30 m ladder

he have escaped injury?

A girl was sitting in a house at

night with no lights on reading

a book. How could she read?

A boy was rushed to the

How could that be?

A woman was in a cabin and

it was pitch black. She had

one match. In the cabin were

a newspaper, a lamp, a candle

and a fi re. Which will she have

lit fi rst?

A lift was on the ground fl oor.

There were four people in the

lift including me. On the fi rst

fl oor, one got out and three

got in. On the second fl oor,

two got out and six got in. The

lift got stuck before it reached

the third fl oor. Everyone else

spent the night in the lift , but

I went home. How must have I

escaped?

A man was going for a walk,

when it started to rain. The

man didn’t have an umbrella

and he wasn’t wearing a hat.

His clothes got soaked, yet not

a single hair on his head got

wet. How could this happen?

Beth’s mother had four

children. She named the fi rst

Spring. She named the second

Summer, and she named the

third Autumn. What must have

been the name of the fourth

child?

A group left their campsite and

hiked south for three miles.

Then they turned east and

hiked for three miles. They then

turned north and hiked for

three miles, at which time they

came across a bear inside their

tent eating their food! What

colour must the bear have

been?

8B SAYING IT IN THE PASSIVE

Life expectancy in ancient Rome was 20–30 years.

Most medicines will be printed by 3-D printers in

the future.

Humans spend a third of their life  sleeping.

Most people believe that Alexander Fleming

discovered penicillin.

People consider Hippocrates of ancient

Greece to be the father of western medicine.

People who run regularly live on average six years

longer.

Humans have become 50% heavier in the past

100 years than they have been throughout history.

Our life expectancy has increased more in the

last fi ft y years than in the entire human existence.

The pace of population ageing is much faster now

than in the past.

In fi ft y years’ time, robots will take over the jobs of

nurses and carers

Laughing 100 times uses the same energy as fi ft een

minutes cycling.

There are more living things living on your skin

than people on the planet.

By 2020, the number of people aged 60 years

and older will outnumber children younger than fi ve

years.

The average person will walk the equivalent of four

times around the world during his/her lifetime.

There is an agreement that countries have to start making provision

to look aft er their ageing populations.

Women, partly because their immune systems, age

more slowly.

You can survive for two months without

eating, but you can only live eleven days

without sleeping.

Two-thirds of all the people in the world who have ever lived to be 65 years old are still alive

today.
