• Riparian areas are forests that run along rivers, streams or other bodies of water. Because of their locations they benefit from greater moisture than plant communities that are further away from these bodies of water.

• Foothill woodlands are primarily found in low elevation and their main plant life are oak trees.

• Mixed conifer forests occur at high altitudes. They consist of many types of pine trees.

• Chaparral areas are shrublands. They are formed by wet winters and dry summers.
