Stay current with yourself: The power of the photograph is two fold: 1. It stops time 2. It has the ability to create an illusion based on how you would like to be seen or to reveal something about yourself that went unnoticed. This can change the way you see yourself and can be used to craft who you would like to become. For this reason it is vital to have a professional portrait not less than every 3 years, every year preferably. I have many clients who have not had a portrait since their senior portrait, and they still think they look like they did then, their main comment is wow, :I have have changed”, not just aged. It helps them to realize who they have become and who they want to be. From there we can play with your image with costume, hair, jewlery and props.

To help you relax and get great results during the portrait session, we recommend these •simple and effective suggestions from experienced, professional photographers.

Consider what to wear to best capture both age and personality. You will also want to •consider bringing in personal items that have special meaning or highlight the occasion. Sports items, instruments hats, shoes and jewelry make the details of the shot come alive.. Be sure to try on any selected outfits the day before the session. Check them out in the mirror.

Browse our Portrait inspiration book and your favorite magazines for poses and looks, •and share your preferences with the photographer. During the session, your photographer will try a variety of classic and contemporary poses to best capture the moment.

Sharing photos is the most delicious way to get the most out of them. •

Make a list of the names of friends and family and what you would like to give them to, •that way, you’re sure to order enough reprints. If you do this ahead of time and order with your session, photos will be ready to start sharing right away.

I recommend adding and extra keepsake booklet for relatives. These photos contain the •photographs that most express your gestures, emotions all the little things your family loves about you.

They have been known to travel far and wide because of their small size and durable •nature. I recommend getting one for each side of the family.

Think about Post session processing and order some fun styles from the Sassy Style Gal-•lery. Have these printed, and you will be feeling glamorous by having one on your wall.

“A GOOD PHOTOGRAPH ...is a celebration, a prayer and an affirmation of life. How Best to Prepare for Your Portrait Session- Professional advice from a top industry director

How to get the most out of your photos

Take time to smell the flowers and appreciate your photos

Friendly Advice for Great Photos•

Heather Wakefield Photography

Owners Manual

By Jean-Pierre D’Zahr•

If you’re an aspiring model or actress, and are preparing for your first photo session, here are •a few tips to get you started and make that first photo session a real success.

In the 24 years of photographing people, and models, I’ve come across models that can •move naturally, captivate, and deliver a range of expressions. Seasoned models have been able to deliver 30 or more shots out of 36, making it difficult to pick which ones to use, they are all GREAT SHOTS!!

In other words, models that are not prepared, or models that don’t know how to move or •pose, in front of a camera will get 1 or 2 shots acceptable out of 36 shots taken. Your goal ultimately is to have as many great shots of you as possible.

That said, here’s some advice I give all beginners, especially if they’ve never had any training.•

1. It’s always great if you love fashion, art and photography. Short of this, get enthusiastic •about the session and arrive looking and feeling excited.

2. Your personality needs to be that of an extrovert. Maybe even a little bit of an exhibitionist •attitude in front of the camera. Show off. Act out. If your shy, be really shy, coy even embar-rassed. Show the emotion you feel and you will open up.

3. To get you to that level you’ll need to do some research. Yes, FUN stuff. Pick up 6-10 fash-•ion magazines, for your age of course, and start reviewing them and looking for your favorite head shots, 3/4 length shots, and full length shots. Then tear them all out and group them into studio shots and location shots. Then break them up into Color and Black and White shots.

4. Now you should have anywhere from 50-100 photos that you’ve torn out of magazines. •Find the photos you think best suit you or that you feel you could emulate, copy or do.

5. Take those best shots and place them in front of a nice large mirror and see if you can •pose like the models in the photos. Yes, this sounds corny but take my word for it, really works. I’ve had many beginner models practice in front of the mirror and then come in for a photo session and you can really see they did practice and were ready for the photo session while others came in and were clueless about how to move and express themselves in front of the camera.

6. Understand that the more animated or exaggerated you can be in front of the camera •the more the photo session will generate great shots. Now this does not mean you need to be a robot and start stiff posing, it really means being able to flow naturally from expression to expression and with body movement. No one should have to be uncomfortable in front of the camera, and the practice will put you at ease. The photographer will guide you into easy poses that look great. 7. Don’t bore the camera, or the viewer. Be entertaining and the photographer will start clicking.

8. If you can develop a number of expressions, and attitudes, people reviewing your photos •will say things like, he is or she is very talented, moves well, is a natural and has a lot of per-sonality. When you have these photo traits you’ll stand out of the crowd. A Great example of having a great range of expressions and attitudes are exhibited by models/actresses, so watch them . They are not afraid to make a daring expression with her face or body and that’s what makes them so bankable. She can ham it up!

1st Time Photo Session Tips for Models and those who want good photos

Note: This next article is meant to assist you in getting great photos, not to intimidate you. •

Read with an attitude of curiosity about why models look great in photos and simple things you can do if you want that same look. If your •style is more casual there are still helpful tips in this article by Pierre. You should not feel that you need to do any of this, but rather that you are empowered to try these things if they help you to feel prepared.

The important thing is that your comfortable and feel good. If this helps great, if not, forget it. •

9. Prepare as much as you can.•

10. Get the right clothes for your photo sessions. What you have at home will NEVER •work! You’ll need a complete new or other wardrobe and that’s why I always recommend using our Wardrobe Consultants to go shopping with you and pick up the right clothes for the photo session. WHY? There are many reasons. Some outfits don’t photograph well, some outfits should be shot in color, others are great for Black and White. Also bring all your favorite magazine tear sheets with you to show the Wardrobe Consultant what kind of look you’re going after for your shots. She’ll know where all the right outfits are around town and make your job a lot easier. Accessories are the finishing touches to any photo. Make an ordinary outfit into something fabulous with just the right accessories. Jewelry, hats, scarfs. Belts, shoes, are all important ingredients to a captivating fashion image. Without these ingredients in your shots you can look just plain and ordinary. Yes, you’re probably thinking OH this is TO MUCH but guess what, if your first photo session does not turn out GREAT what do you think will happen next? You don’t like your pictures and then figure it is the studio.

If you’re going to try out you’d better be prepared to do it right and give it your BEST. It is •a worthy investment to get new clothes and will make the session more special when you wear them. It helps to sure your investment in the photos , and will help guarantee you will love them.

If you must use clothes you have, I recommend either new clothes, or old clothes- that •show some wear. Please do not bring dirty or wrinkled clothes, unless that is the look you want to show. For casual session this is important because you still want to look your best.

12. Now don’t worry about how good you will look. Just follow the instructions of Make-•up Artist Mary Erickson gives in the following this article. Whenever you shoot with any photographer I recommend you have your hair and makeup done. There is good reason for that, you’ll get the latest commercial and beauty look and treatment from the profession-als, insuring the photos do not look dated.

Last thing - Always come to your photo sessions on time, and with a positive (good) at-•titude. Try leaving your problems behind and by all means have GOOD TIME being in front of the camera - it’s your moment so take full advantage of it.

Professional advice from a top industry director, cont.

Heather on Preparation:

Natural, Innocent,

Heather Wakefield Photography Owners Manual

By Makeup Artist Mary Erickson•

If you do not have a lot of modeling and photography experience I suggest you look over •the following list of things that will help you for your shoot. The more of these guidelines you follow the better your shots will turn out.

1. 72 hours before your photo shoot, avoid the following items (these items can give you oily •skin and swelling):

* Red meat * Alcohol * Caffeine * Spicy foods•

* Retin A and Alpha Hydroxy creams (causes skin peeling that will show.)•

2. Drink lots of water, carry it with you everywhere you go, and keep sipping.•

3. Exfoliate your skin at least once a week and also the morning of the shoot.•

4. Have your brows professionally shaped and then keep them up by plucking the strays •every few days.

5. It is a good idea to carry your own mascara to the shoot with you. Some make-up artists •use mascara with the same wand on several people. This can spread infection very quickly. Unless you know the artist and know that she only uses disposable wands, it’s best not to take your chances.

6. Dark roots will look even worse in photos. Refresh your hair color a few days before your •shoot. If you do not color your hair, try “shades” or a toner just a shade lighter then your hair to make it shine. If you need a trim, do it before the shoot.

7. Fingernails and toenails should be one length, well manicured, and the polish should be •colorless or French, unless this shoot calls for color. Go ahead and treat yourself to a profes-sional manicure. It will be a great way to prepare.

8. If your are having your makeup done in the studio, all traces of makeup should be gone •from your skin. All eyeliner and mascara should be gone. Your face should be clean and product free when you arrive. If not, please take extra time to create makeup that flatters. Go to macy’s makeup counter and have one of the girls there sample product on you as an fast, cheap way to get another set of eyes looking at you.

9. Do not over condition your hair before a shoot. Do use your regular styling products to •make your hair behave, as chances are the hair stylist will not be wetting your hair and not be able to use gels, etc. Your hair must be dry before you arrive at the shoot.

10. Avoid dry lips by putting Vaseline on your lips before bed and the morning of your shoot•

11. For body (lots of skin showing) shots, be sure you get rid of tan lines by visiting a tanning •booth a few times. Also get rid of unsightly body hair. Moisturize your skin.

If you are paying the artist, feel free to give advice on how you want to look. The photos are •yours. If it is a commercial shoot or a shoot that someone else is paying for its best to keep quiet on makeup and hair. Chances are the artist knows what the photographer and art direc-tor want. It may not be what you prefer but normally the person paying for the shoot likes to make ALL the decisions. If you are new to professional photo sessions it is a good idea to go ahead and let the artist make the decisions, even if you are paying her or him. In most cases they will know what will look better in the photos - they are dealing with lights, backgrounds and lens filters that you probably are not familiar with.

Photo Shoot Suggestions

Note: This next article I included as an added extra. •

Some people just want to show up and have the flow be easy. If this is you, skip this article. Others would like to know what they can do to •improve the photos from their end. This is good industry advice from big studios and it works for everyone.

The important thing is that your comfortable and feel good. •

If you do this within 3 days, your 8x10 will come with the package. It is best to do it now so your are happy with your look.

Once you have called in any preferences, changes, retouching and styles, and ordered your print, you can look forward to an-other email announcing your package as finished.

Then we just make a time to get together so I can show your the package. I prefer to do this in person so I can share in your joy of the pictures.
