“We are a locally owned restaurant that takes pride in the community we do business in.”That’s from Lee Drapp, general manager for the Middleton location of Ruth’s Chris Steak

House, located on Deming Way. The restaurant specializes in steak and wine. For Lee, who also works as the private dining coordinator, providing hospitality to guests is the most rewarding part of his job. The best compliment he has ever received was that the Middleton restaurant is the best Ruth’s Chris Steak House location.

“Working at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House is always an honor,” he says, “but to be recognized as the best of them all says a lot about our staff and management team.”

What makes this Ruth’s Chris so successful?“It all starts with our employees,” Lee says. “They are the best!Lee finds inspiration in the community and the guests they serve at Ruth’s Chris. “They are always amazing,” he says. “You just have to listen, watch and sometimes ask.”Because Ruth’s Chris takes pride in the fact that all of its sauces and salad dressings are

homemade, the mixer is used more than any other appliance. Lee appreciates another appli-ance even more, though.

“What we couldn’t do without is the big gadget that cleans the dishes, the dishwasher,” he says.Lee has been part of the dining experience for numerous celebrities, including Barbara

Streisand, Adam Sandler, Gerald Ford, Michael Jordan and Clint Eastwood, Will Smith, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Ginger Rogers —to name a few.

Lee’s favorite hobby is playing with his children, and he also cooks at home upon occasion. Chicken piccata is his favorite dish to create, and his signature dish at home is “Z -French Toast” for a morning with his children.

A Drapp household favorite is Mexican cuisine. When cooking at home, Lee recommends keeping the trash can in the middle of the kitchen and a towel over your shoulder. Both help a cook to clean as they go.

Lee likes to use seasoning when cooking at home, but what’s really important, he says, is that all herbs are fresh. As for eating healthy, Lee stays away from bread and dairy. Eating small por-tions and exercise always help, too.

And what is Lee’s kitchen pet peeve? “Plate presentation,” he says. “Every picture has a frame.”Lee would like you to know that the steak house is starting the Spring Ruth’s Classics in

March. And March 4th will be a particularly busy day.“We have a Rombauer Wine Dinner on Fat Tuesday,” he says, “plus the Barry Alvarez Show

live in our lounge.”Lee would like to extend an invitation to anyone who might be interested.“Come on in for Ruth’s Hour (Happy Hour) to find out what we’re all about,” he says, “or

visit our local website for specials throughout the week at ruthschrismiddleton.com. Say hello when you do; I look forward to meeting you.”

Dear Residents,Well, March is here! I know, where does time go? And with it come signs that maybe—just maybe—spring is coming. This winter has been especially cold and snowy, and I’ll welcome any sign of encouragement. Daylight sav-ings time starts on March 9, and spring officially starts on March 20 (on the calendar anyway).

Of course, these signs might not be enough for you, and you might want to take a spring vacation. In the past, my husband and I have taken spring trips to places like Las Vegas. What are you doing this year? Will you be escaping to someplace warm? Or will you be trying to stay warm here in Wisconsin? Either way, you’re encouraged to submit stories and photos.

March also means that St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. I must admit, not being Irish myself, I don’t have any traditions that I cel-ebrate annually. But now that my daughters are getting older, I’m looking forward to starting some.

What are some (family-friendly) ways you celebrate St. Pattie’s? Feel free to submit your traditions and photos.

As always, please support the adver-tisers here in the pages of your maga-zine. They make our magazine possible, and several of them are your neighbors!

SOMETIMES I SIT at my computer and just kind of stare at it won-dering what I should write about this month. Today is no different. Often, a brilliant idea pops into my head. Other times, not so much. I hate to give you nothing but facts and data about Village matters. That’s not my style. I like to add a bit of personality and flair. I want you to have a sense of what I am thinking and feeling about how things are going at the Village and within your neighborhood.

That said, right now, I am just plain ol’ excited! If you read my arti-cles each month, I have been detailing how many projects are hap-pening around the Village this year. That means a lot of energy and especially, a lot of coordination to make sure all the details happen as planned. So, here is the most recent information I can give you as of the day before Valentine’s Day, when I am writing this article:

INFRASTRUCTURE: On February 11th, the 2nd required advertise-ment for bids was published in the WI State Journal. Bid documents are being distributed and as of earlier this week, at least 11 contractors had requested our documents and we anticipate at least three more will be requesting them. Bids are due and will be opened on Tuesday, March 4th at 2pm at the Village Center. This is a public bid opening so if you have nothing else to do that day, feel free to stop by and observe the pro-cess! The number of plans being distributed could mean a higher num-ber of bids being submitted and hopefully, really good pricing! The projects we do in Maple Bluff are very attractive for a contractor due to the size and the scope of the work. I would also like to believe that the ease in which a contractor can work with our Village Staff is also a factor in their desire to work here, but that may just be my opinion!

Village Staff is working with Baird regarding the financing of these projects. Initial resolutions for financing will be going to the Village

Board at their March 11th meeting. Also at that meeting, the official award of the project to a contractor will be finalized.

We are still anticipating an early April start date, but of course the weather will need to cooperate for that to happen. Once the con-tractor is identified, we will firm up a schedule and hopefully by the April newsletter I can provide more detail. Nothing has changed so far regarding our intentions to start in the upper bluff and then work into the lower bluff by mid-summer.

Don’t forget that in addition to the water and street projects, the Village will be working with MG&E, Charter and AT&T for the under-grounding of power lines and removal of power poles. These under-grounding projects will take place in the 300 block of Lakewood, the 700 block of Lakewood and on Cambridge Road.

If you have any questions about our projects for infrastructure or undergrounding, please don’t hesitate to give me a call at the Village Center, 244-3048 or on my cell, 608-209-2017.

ROXBURY DEVELOPMENT: This is just a quick update that plans have now been submitted for a proposed development at the open lot and the building where Lois’ Salon used to be located. The Plan Commission will be hosting a first meeting with the developer soon. We will be notifying residents via the Village Email system so if you want to receive those notifications; you need to make sure you are on the email list. That list recently was updated as we took several dif-ferent lists and combined them into one for all Village notifications.

WARREN DAILEY CABIN: Just like with the infrastructure, the 2nd public advertisement for bids was published on February 11th and bids from contractors to construct the cabin are due into the Village

Center by Tuesday, February 18th. There will be a public bid opening at 2pm that day. By the time you read this, that contractor will have been identified and, movement toward construction already started.

The fundraising efforts via the sale of bricks and tiles was com-pleted on February 28th. If you did not purchase a brick or tile and would still like to, please contact me to discuss further. We would like to thank everyone who made a purchase of a tile or a brick and for those who simply made a contribution. I would especially like to thank Ann Dailey for her contribution and for providing the oppor-tunity to name this wonderful cabin after her husband and long-time Village advocate, Warren Dailey. Warren is missed so much and now, he will always be remembered with his name associated with this cabin. What a wonderful tribute to a very special man!

MBCC: I reference the Maple Bluff Country Club because the club has been active recently with some ideas about enhancements to their facility. Village leadership will continue talking with MBCC leader-ship about their plans and how the Village can work with the club as they pursue ideas for their members.

So for my final comments, I have given you an update on some of the major projects taking place around the Village this year. I am really excited about all of these projects and they seem to be progress-ing as expected/scheduled. You will be impacted by some of these projects so it is important you stay aware and be ready as changes take place or as meetings occur. Your feedback is always critical to keep-ing us on track, so please don’t hesitate to provide your comments.

IT CERTAINLY HAS been a long winter. With warmer temperatures on the horizon, a lot of smaller animals will be re-emerg-ing. Along the same lines, this is the time of year that dogs get the urge to do some sightseeing, too often on their own. Please maintain control of your dog.

The police department is trying to locate and identify the owners of a long haired German Shepherd, most likely a young male. This dog bit a cross country skier on the Maple Bluff Country Club grounds on Sunday, February 9th. Please contact Sgt. Murphy if you can assist with this identi-fying the dog and owners.

Telephone scammers are keeping the telephone companies busy. Recently, the police department took a report of a tele-phone call made to a resident saying that a grandson had been involved and injured in a traffic crash and needed funds to pay for the damages. The alert resident had the presence of mind to ask pertinent ques-tions and foiled the attempted fraud. I don’t know how the scammer had the grandson’s name. But anyone who is told that a fam-ily member has been in a crash and needs help has an immediate emotional response. If it happens to you take a deep breath and slow the conversation down. It used to be a huge red warning flag when scammers would ask that funds be sent via Western Union. The latest trend is to request Green Dot Money Pak pre-paid credit cards.

This year the police department started an Officer Recognition program. This year Officer Gary Sandridge was recognized as our main firearms instructor and as an emergency vehicle operations instructor.

Officer Jay Sugden was recognized for his life saving achievement last year. As I had written about in the August 2013 Village Newsletter, Officer Sugden responded to a 42-year-old man who stopped breathing and didn’t have a pulse due to an asthma attack. Officer Sugden began cardiac chest compressions and maintained them until the arrival of paramedics. Officer Sugden later received personal thanks from the man whose life he saved. Officers Hector Covarrubias and Officer Kyle Dabbs were recognized as our field training officers. Police academies provide the basic knowl-edge and skills for future officers, but the field training officers provide hands-on real time training on the street. A good field training program is critical to developing exceptional police officers.

One of our senior part-time officers, Keith Wilke, was recognized for meritorious conduct. Officer Wilke began his protective service career as a Maple Bluff fire intern in 1984, later serving as a part-time relief duty officer for the Village Fire Department. He has been with the police department for the last 12 years as a part time officer and has been an outstanding resource.

The officers were presented commen-dation bars that will be worn on their uniforms. The commendation bars were presented to the officers by Village Board President, Eric McLeod.

Congratulations to the officers for jobs well done!

If you have an emergency, dial 9-1-1, an officer will be dispatched to respond. If you need to speak to or have contact with an officer for a situation that is not an emergency, please dial 255-2345. If you

need on roadway overnight parking or are requesting a vacation residence check, or are responding to an officer’s request for follow up information, please use the busi-ness line, 244-1430 ext 113.

AS I COMPOSE this article the sun is shin-ing brightly on yet another sub-zero day. It is unlikely that we will break any records for cold or snow, but it seems as though we have had a good dose of both for this win-ter season. The calendar tells me that spring is 5-6 weeks away. The weather reports sug-gest a slight change to milder conditions…spring will come!

With the arrival of spring we will also be welcoming in the 2014 CIP. The contrac-tor will be selected in early March and we should expect to begin seeing their presence near the end of the month as they will likely begin to mobilize equipment into the area for staging. We can expect to see significant activity beginning in April and continue into next fall. I encourage everyone to plan on alternate routes in and out of the village if and when construction activity closes the roadways you would normally use. We will make reasonable efforts to keep everyone informed of current and expected activi-ties. We realize that road closings/driveway access/water supplies are sensitive topics and we will treat them accordingly.

Village collection services will be altered when construction is occurring on and or near your streets. For instance, trash and recycling will need to be brought out by 6am on day of collection to allow the vil-lage crew and recycle contractor to get into and out of the active work zones in a timely manner. Other street side collections such as brush and garden debris will be suspended when the contractors are working on or near your streets. These works zones are extremely congested with large equipment in constant motion, public works staff and equipment will not be entering these areas.

We can certainly expect that the contrac-tors’ will likely work long days, 7am-7pm is not unusual. Our engineering firm and your department of public works will have a presence throughout the project to ensure a quality product is supplied and that the operation flows as smoothly as possible.

The Emerald Ash Borer has been discov-ered in a nearby Madison park. Now that it has been determined to be at our doorstep, I would recommend the following: iden-tify ash trees on your private property and

determine the current health/vigor/quality of these trees. The trees that are in poor con-dition should be removed as soon as practi-cal. Those trees that are demonstrating good health characteristics should be further scru-tinized as to their quality and desirability and if they would be good candidates for treat-ments to protect them from the insect. The treatments would likely be required on an annual basis. Only healthy ash trees should be considered for treatment. Please consult with a trusted service provider to help in determining a course of action and give fur-ther consideration in having all of your trees on private property inspected and or pruned every 3-5 years or as conditions warrant.

Looking forward to spring, please call with your questions and concerns.

Cynthia JohnsonIn late 2008 my husband, Zach, had the opportunity with his company to move anywhere in the Midwest. We were living in Seattle, Washington at the time and had been there for a decade and a half. After a bit of looking and a trip to Madison, the answer was clear. We moved here the following April and discovered Maple Bluff. Zach says it’s just like my hometown, Charlevoix, Michigan. I’ll

agree it’s easily comparable. Maybe that’s a little bit of why I love Maple Bluff.

When we moved here in 2009, I left my residential real estate career to care for our 3 children; Charlie (9), Sam (7) and Lucy (5). My kids keep me on my toes between baseball, ballet, soccer and other school activities. Prior to being a realtor, I taught in Seattle Public Schools from the mid to late 90’s. My college degree was in education with a minor in math and science. I truly enjoyed teach-ing middle school math. I love a little chaos and finding the order.

Since living here in Maple Bluff I have really enjoyed getting to know so many fam-ilies through my kids, the Country Club, school, and all the neighborhood events that make this neighborhood a true community. I served 3 years on the Maple Bluff Country Club’s social committee and am currently still serving on the Club’s Tennis and Golf Committees. While I enjoy serving on the Club’s committees, I’ve truly enjoyed my last year serving on the Park and Rec committee here in the Village and am looking forward to being more involved in the Village as a whole. I feel blessed to live in such a welcoming, fun, active community as Maple Bluff and

want to do my part to assure that it remains a wonderful place to reside and call home.

Jenny KuehnI graduated from the University of Arizona with my BA and Masters in accounting. Following graduation, I took a job as an auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC in the Phoenix office, and later transferred to the Chicago

office. I enjoyed my four years at PwC, and was fortunate to learn a lot from many talented colleagues during my time there. In an effort to have a wider variety of work experience, I left PwC and took a job with Harley-Davidson Financial Services in Chicago, first in their accounting department and then, following a promotion, in Harley’s strategic planning department. I worked closely with the executive team to help create and implement strategic initiatives for HDFS.

In 2009, my husband (Dan) and I decided to move back to Madison, to be closer to our families and to start our own. Following our move, I worked briefly in the finance department at Meriter Hospital until our oldest daugh-ter, Frances, was born in 2010. After Frances’s birth, I decided that I wanted to stay at home full time. We expanded our family again in 2012 and we now have two happy and healthy girls, Frances and Harriet. Being a mom has been a life changing experience for me. I learn from my children every day and they make me want to be the best person I can be.

Despite the fact that Dan and I both grew up on the West side, we are very happy to be Maple Bluff residents and we cannot imagine living anywhere else. Maple Bluff provides a wonderful balance of everything that is impor-tant to us. We love being close to downtown Madison, and we enjoy the easy access to the lake and Maple Bluff parks. The activities the commu-nity and country club provide for our children are unparalleled by anything that any of our other non-Maple Bluff friends enjoy. The sense of civic pride and involvement in the community in Maple Bluff is something that is becoming increasingly harder to find; and is something that Maple Bluff has fortunately not lost. After living here for only four years, we count many of our fellow Maple Bluff residents our best friends; and I think that is a testament to the type of people that are attracted to this neighborhood.

Largely because of this unique environment, it has been very important to me to stay involved in the community to do what I can to help continue this strong tradition. For the past few years, I have volunteered to chair the Fest on the Fourth. I have worked closely with the Fire Department, Village employees and volunteers to make it a successful, fun & festive family event. Planning the event has been a great way for me to meet more of my neighbors, and has further strengthened my conviction that this is one of the best places on the planet to live (and I’m writing this in the middle of a cold-February!). I love it here.

Being relatively new to the neighborhood, I feel like I could bring a fresh perspective to the Board. I believe Maple Bluff is an exceptionally great place to live, and, being a recent transplant to the Bluff, I don’t take this for granted. I am a hard worker and I see projects through to the end. I also believe my accounting/finance background will be useful when the Board tackles finance related activities.

Peter DuffMy wife, Mary, and I settled in Maple Bluff 17 years ago and, along with our daughters Phoebe (7) and Luella (5), have valued the exceptional community spirit and services our Village offers.

Mary and I have been fortunate to work with vil-lagers who possess an infectious enthusiasm for our neighborhood's well-being. This enthusiasm

prompted me to serve as a trustee from 2005 through 2011, after which I took leave to focus on my stay-at-home parental duties. Late in 2013, I was asked to fill a vacancy on the current Village Board, and having accepted feel very privileged to serve as trustee once again.

Over the years, I have chaired the By-Laws & Ordinance, Public Works and Urban Forestry committees, and also served on Personnel, Country Club, Assessment Board of Review and Plan Commission committees. As a Village volunteer, I have coordinated Fest on the Fourth, Winterfest, and currently co-coordinate Camp-Ya-Gotta-Wanna. I also look forward to serv-ing as a parent volunteer this summer for the Maple Bluff Muskies (yes, I am counting the days until summer).

As your Trustee, my primary attention will be devoted to:• Maintaining property values.• Assessing expenditures with controlled measure and attention to detail.• Objectively considering and respectfully addressing all views offered by Villagers.

I appreciate your vote, and look forward to serving as your Trustee.
