1 Erosion of phosphorus rocks, produces PO4

2 Absorption of PO4 by plants animals eat plants

3 Decomposition PO4 in urine, poop and dead animal returned to soil.

4 Leaching of PO4 occurs. PO4 runsoff and enters bodies of water.

5 Proliferation of phytoplankton and algae occurs.

6 Sediment occurs when PO4 sinks to the bottom and forms new rock = P in rock again.

• Nitrates from fertilizers can be converted N2O which is a 

factor in climate change and reduces the ozone layer.

Negative from phosphates and nitrates:

Eutrophication Excess nutrients (fertilizer PO4) reaches bodies of water  and causes the overproduction of algae and plankton. Worse case scenario is the death of water area. 

Steps:1 Excess phosphates runs off into water

2 Fertilizer causes algae to bloom (proliferate)

3 Sun cannot penetrate water = no photosynthesis = producers die4 No O2 in water = no air for fish = fish die

5 Sedimentation is formed from excess PO4 and dead aquatic life6 Death of water area
