Next Tuesday-Thursday Year 6 travel to Canberra with Mr Blanshard, Mrs Young and Mrs Radom. Taking away a large group of students for such a long period of time is a huge responsibility for the staff, who leave their own lives, families and homes to care for your children. We all know how much stress and worry a simple birthday party or sleepover for 10 friends can be….imagine 60 children for 60 hours with multiple meals, activities, bus trips etc etc!!!!!!!!! Overnight excursions are always one of the highlights of the school year and I know that the children and staff have had and will have a memorable time at camp. It is always lovely to hear the words of thanks and appreciation that students and parents have for the teachers and the success of the excursion when they return. NAIDOC Celebration The whole school and entire Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS) are very excited about the upcoming NAIDOC celebrations. We hope that many school parents and families will join us on Wednesday evening from 5 pm in the school hall for the Art Show opening, featuring many of our talented students’ artwork. Please see the detailed flyer in the newsletter. School Spellathon What a wonderful response we have had to our first ever Spellathon!! Congratulations to all students who raised funds for our school and in particular to top fundraisers Jake B (1/2F ) $500 and Keilana S (3C) $305. Please see more details later in the newsletter. Prizes will be handed out at the 9.15 Monday assembly next week. Young Writers’ Award Winner- Josh D (Year 5) Congratulations to Josh D who was one of 14 finalists from over 400 entries from over 60 schools in the Northern Beaches Young Writers’ Competition. Josh will receive an award next Monday evening at the Northern Beaches Council. Josh’s piece of writing entitled, The Eyes Have It, is reproduced later in the newsletter. Ex Students Congratulations to ex students of Wheeler Heights who have recently been elected as leaders at Cromer HS for 2017. Caryn Greyling (School Captain), and Kate Gallo and Kacie Turner (School Prefects). We are always very keen and proud to hear of the achievements of our ex students. Summer School Uniform Now is the transition period for summer uniform as the weather improves. By the start of Term 4 we would like to see all students in full summer uniform. Our school uniform is certainly one of the best on the northern beaches. Lately we are seeing a lot of children wearing skins under their shorts or dresses. Such specialist gear is certainly not essential or even needed for a 30 minute casual sports session during a normal school day. On PSSA competition days the wearing of skins may be an option but should only be worn during the match, not throughout the whole day. Thank you for your support in this matter. Super Hoot Morning Tea The special morning teas for Term 3 will be held early next term, Yr 3-6 on Wednesday 12 October and K-2 on Friday 14 October. Invitations will be given out next week for eligible students. School Disco - Thursday 20 October Please be sure to mark this date in your calendar for the School Disco, always a highlight of the year. Teacher - Parent Appointments Teachers readily make themselves available to meet with parents to discuss various concerns regarding your children. Please remember that the times immediately before and after school are very busy times, with class preparation to be done, grade and staff meetings, sports or activity training sessions and other various commitments. If you would like to arrange a specific meeting with a teacher please contact the teacher or the school office (in person or by email) to organise a suitable time for all. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Term 3 Wk 9 15 September 2016

Term 4 Dates Please see the Term 4 dates listed on the right of the first page of this newsletter, especially in regard to end of year activities. 2017 Enrolments and Leavers Please be sure to visit the office to ensure that all siblings are enrolled for next year. Also if you are not going to be returning to Wheeler Heights in 2017, please let the office know as soon as possible. We are currently beginning to plan for numbers, classes and staffing for 2017. David Scotter Principal K-6 student welfare BOUNCEBACK program This term students and staff across the school in K-6 are involved in lessons about Toni Nobles’ BOUNCEBACK strategies. The purpose of BOUNCEBACK is to develop and build students’ resilience and their capacity to cope well with times of adversity or hardship (and even be strengthened by them). It is the ability to bounce back from difficult times to a fulfilling life while retaining a positive sense of self. Resilience skills are also needed for academic success eg persistence, courage & goal setting. BOUNCEBACK is an acronym for 10 key statements which are aimed to develop resilience. We will be teaching one of these statements each week across the school and sharing it with parents in our school newsletter. This week’s focus is O - Other people can help if you talk to them. Get a reality check. Nothing is so awful that you can’t talk about it to someone you trust. Things will be easier if you share your worries, but it takes courage to do so. Everyone needs someone to talk to now and then. Research has shown that talking to someone about what is troubling you is a sign of strength, not a weakness. If you talk to someone you trust you can get a reality check because they will tell you if they think you are not being realistic. Maybe you are getting the facts wrong or you don’t have all the facts you need. Maybe you are seeing things in a distorted way. Liz Armstrong Deputy Principal

Mr T Blanshard Assistant Principal Stage 3 DANCESPORT Coordinator GIBBERAGONG 3/4S, 4RM and 4M Excursion to Gibberagong Mr Jones (3/4S), Mrs Marshall (4RM) and I had the great pleasure of taking our marvellous classes to the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park for a brush with nature. We had the opportunity of visiting the Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre for a much anticipated learning experience. The weather certainly made our day just perfect the second time around! Here is a recount of our day written by Ethan M.

My Excursion to Gibberagong. Gibberagong is an Environmental Education Centre. It’s located at Bobbin Head in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It was an hour’s drive from Wheeler Heights to Gibberagong for Year Four on Monday 12th September. We went on a bush walk learning about plants, animals and aboriginal people’s way of living. We learnt lots of cool and wonderful facts about the bushlands. For example, we learned about bush medicine, what it does and where to find it. We heard about survival skills, where to take shelter and how the Guringai aboriginal people lived traditionally. One interesting fact I learnt was that the tree sap from a Red Gum could make your mouth numb and was used in indigenous initiation where they knock one of your teeth out. I loved the amazing views during our bush walk. To finish off, our instructor Brad took us down to a bridge that led to some mangroves which had yummy sea salt on their leaves. At the end of the trip I had really learned to appreciate nature and wild life. By Ethan M (4M)

As you can see we had a great day and are very grateful for the help provided by our three parent volunteers from the day. Thank you Mr Spooner (3/4S), Mrs Duffel (4RM) and Mrs Wright (4M)!

K-2 Public Speaking Competition

Last Friday Mr Scotter and Mrs Armstrong had the pleasure of judging the K-2 Public Speaking Final. As part of the judging criteria they considered a number of elements such as voice projection, expression, clarity, content and audience participation.

Congratulations to the K-2 Public Speaking Final winners: Kindergarten: Erin O, Year 1: Kai K and Year 2: Anna C.

There were three students from each year in the K-2 Public Speaking Final which was the culmination of a number of class and year speaking competitions. Over the previous weeks each class held a class public speaking competition based on selected topics. The class standard was exceptionally high and every teacher was extremely impressed with the effort and preparation that the students put into their speeches. Three students from each class were selected to go to the public speaking semi-final for their year. The semi-final was judged by the K-2 teachers with the three selected winners going to the K-2 Public Speaking Final.

Well done to all students for your entertaining and informative speeches.

Outstanding Spell-a-thon Results for 2016

We had an amazing response to the Spell-a-thon this term and raised $19,359.75. This money is going towards purchasing new technology and upgrading our K-2 playground. A huge thank you to all of our students who worked hard to learn all of their spelling words for the Spell-a-thon, and collect so many sponsors. Also to our generous sponsors who have supported our school in this exciting educational fundraiser!

I am delighted to announce the winners of each of the categories, who will be presented with their prizes in the Monday morning assembly on Monday 19 September.

There will also be an exciting lucky draw for a surfboard at the assembly. All of the students who collected money for the Spell-a-thon will be entered in the draw.

The Eyes Have It

When my sister was born, she had these huge, sparkling eyes. She is now twenty and nothing has changed. It seemed like they had magical powers. And guess what? They do. I’ll tell you the story… I’ve always wanted to be a radiologist. This story takes place when I was twelve years old. One evening, my sister was doing her home work in the computer room. I was in my room eating silently from a secret stash of biccies, even though I wasn’t meant to. Then I heard this drawling voice from the computer room; “Tom’s eating biscuits in his room.” I whipped around. Amy was not standing in the doorway, but sitting at the computer in the next room, with a wall between us! “Thomas!” I heard my angry Mum from downstairs, “come down here. And bring the biscuits with you”. I got a severe talking to and biscuits banned for a week, but that doesn’t really affect me; what really bugs me is, how did Amy see through that wall? It doesn’t make sense. I guess that she might have heard me crunching the biscuits. Yeah, I thought climbing into bed, that would make sense. On that thought, I drifted slowly into a dreamless, untroubled sleep. Toothaches really hurt. So, I might have been in pain, but the day that I visited the radiologist would open a doorway to an inspirational half-hour with someone who works my dream job. Immediately upon walking through the door I forgot about my toothache. All the x-ray machines were there and it looked just like pictures I had seen in books. I sat down shakily on the chair. The radiologist greeted me. “Morning” I stuttered back. “I just need you to put these glasses on for me” he said. The X-ray machine lowered itself into position. I noticed something strange. Huge great eyes were stuck to the zapper. Each of the pupils had a beam of light in them, that attached themselves together in the middle, ready to zap. Something about those eyes looked familiar. Then it came to me. “Amy!” I yelled. “you’re eyes… they are X-ray!” Amy looked worried and glanced at mum. Mum gave a sigh and a knowing nod. Then Amy started to fess up. “I was born with a special gift.” She said “I can see through anything. Anything! That’s why my eyes are so big. That’s how I knew about you eating those biscuits the other night. I’ve kept this a secret from you for so long now. I just thought you might think me a freak.” “That’s fine, Amy.” I said. “you’re amazing. And useful.” An idea was ticking over in the back of my mind. “very useful” I am now twenty-two years old. I got my wish. I am now a radiologist. Anyone that comes into my practice says that I have an amazing assistant. Very useful. And I must admit, my sister’s eyes make a pretty good x-ray machine. By Josh D (Year 5) WORLD LYMPHOMA AWARENESS DAY – THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER

Today, children from KG, 2E and 3M will be wearing green ribbons for World Lymphoma Awareness Day. This day is celebrated around the world to raise awareness of cancers of the lymphatic system.

Despite a new diagnosis every 2 hours in Australia, Lymphoma is currently a low priority cancer in this country and the aim is to improve community awareness to assist with an early diagnosis and access to the best available treatment.

With lymphoma having a very close connection to one of our families, we would love to show our support. CJ W from 3M will have extra ribbons, if you are interested in wearing one for the day.

For more information about lymphoma, please check out the following link: https://www.lymphoma.org.au

Payment is required IN ADVANCE of the commencement of Vacation Care. Please note that bookings are not confirmed unless payment is received. Payment for the day and for each excursion, once made, is NON REFUNDABLE but a booked day may be changed for another day if staffing and organisation allows. Excursion costs are not transferable. EXCURSIONS require advance booking and organisation. Please book early so that we can plan transport, tickets and staffing accordingly. On days designated as “Wheels Day” or where personal riding equipment (bikes, scooters, skateboards etc.) is brought on a day, parents are to provide safety gear that they deem sufficient to ensure their child/ren’s safety. This also includes the provision of clothing and footwear suitable to the day. On days designated as a “Water themed” day parents are to provide their child/ren with clothing and footwear appropriate to the engagement of water based activities, as well as any additional requests as outlined in the description. Consent must be given in writing for each excursion. Please check approximate departure and arrival times for excursion days. Children MUST be signed in and out each day During excursions children are provided with a wrist band with the centre name and contact details. For detailed information on the day’s events or timings please see the Daily Planning Sheets displayed in-Centre. CHILDREN WILL NEED TO BRING:

Morning tea Lunch (unless otherwise specified): Please note that our Centre is “Nut Free”. We have several children with severe allergies to

nuts and nut products, therefore families are requested to ensure that children’s snacks and packed lunches do not include foods with nuts in them. We thank you for your co-operation in this important safety consideration. It would assist us in the delivery of messages about healthy eating if the children bring a healthy and nutritious lunch to Vacation Care and avoid snack foods which are high in fat and sugar. We suggest a sandwich, cheese, fruit and veggie sticks, crackers, yoghurt and water to drink. Please see our LUNCHBOX Fact Sheet for suggestions.

Hat /Water bottle for excursions + any other requirements for a particular activity (Please check the daily program) Covered walking shoes Clothing that covers shoulders

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE CHILDREN MONEY TO SPEND ON EXCURSIONS, UNLESS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED ON

THE PROGRAM.
