In this School Matters:
A National Celebration of Storytime - Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson & Laura Wood
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual event organised by the Australian Library and
Information Association. Each year a picture book
written by an Australian author is read simultaneously
in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centres,
family homes and bookshops. Now in its 18th year,
NSS has brought together over 1 million participants
from across Australia and New Zealand.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 were read Hickory
Dickory Dash on Wednesday the 23rd of May.
Taking part in events like NSS not only gives children
the wonderful experience of the day, but also reminds
of the importance of reading to young minds and contributes to creating healthy reading habits for life.
The students and teachers really enjoyed reading this book and participating in the related activities. We
have two copies of Hickory Dickory Dash in the library and there is already a waiting list to borrow them.
Mrs Fuller and Mrs Swatridge
A huge congratulations to ALL of Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 who have already completed the 2018
Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). They all have read, or have had read to them, at least 30 books
from the PRC library.
Some other primary classes are very close to finishing and we can't wait to find out which one will be the
first to get their big gold coin on the wall.
Mrs Swatridge, Mrs Fuller and Mrs Watson
On Wednesday the 4th of April in Term 1, Isabelle Chardon and I represented the Blue Mountains
at the PSSA soccer gala day, at Valentines Park soccer grounds. Our team played 7 games and
made it to the semi finals. Unfortunately, we lost that game 2-1. We were very tired by the end of
the day and we had a great time.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Congratulations to all the students in Years 3 and 5 who completed the NAPLAN tests over the past two
weeks. We were a trial school for doing the test online, and mostly it was a good experience for all
concerned. We are sure everyone did their very best.
Well done to all the students who over the past two weeks have represented BEPS or the Region in a
variety of sporting activities. I know you all had a wonderful time and win or lose, you played your best
game. Well done.
Thank you to all the parents who have supported the school over the past few weeks by transporting
students to and from sporting activities and PULSE rehearsals. Without your support, we would need to
hire buses, adding to the cost for parents. We are always very grateful for your support.
Today at the Zone Cross Country Carnival, a large group of students represented BEPS and we are
looking forward to hearing the final results when they return to school. Well done to all the students who
participated.
As the weather is cooling off in the mornings, students are wearing jackets and jumpers to school,
however when they warm up, particularly at lunch time, a large number of jackets and jumpers are left
behind under the COLA or on the oval. Outside the Administration Block, near the Principal’s Office, is a
large pile of clothing, many of which look to be near new. We would encourage you to have a look and
see if any of your children’s items of clothing are there. In addition, please if you buy any new items,
immediately write your child’s name in the item so that we can return the item to them.
After the long weekend in June, I will be on leave for the remainder of the term. For the four weeks I am
on leave, Mrs Liz Dunning will relieve as Principal and Ms Laura Morris will relieve as Assistant Principal.
I am sure everyone will give them their fullest support throughout this time.
Cheers
Kerry

PERMISSION NOTES. We are receiving a number of notes each week with NO NAME.
We are encouraging ALL parents/caregivers to download the BEPS Skoolbag app (Apple app store or
Google Play). It has had an update, and is much more user-friendly. See instructions below.
Once you have logged in please select ‘Groups’ at the bottom left hand side of the screen. Here you can
edit your ‘Groups’ and subscribe just to the ones that are relevant to you and your child/ren. We
recommend that you please ensure you are subscribed to the ‘Whole School Notes’ Group as well.
Please remember you can then view, download and print notes if desired.
continued……….
To access Skoolbag from the BEPS school website:
1) Go to the homepage,
2) 2) Click on ‘Skoolbag’
3) Then scroll down the page until you can see the Skoolbag ‘app’ on the screen.
You will still need to ‘log in’ with your login details to view the content
in the groups you have subscribed to.
You can then view, and print notes just as you can from a mobile
device.
Please note if you choose to skip logging in to the Skoolbag app and
do not create an account, you will not be able to view any of the notes

How to order at school or online
Lunch orders must be placed in class baskets before 9.00am each morning. Lunches are delivered to the
classrooms at the beginning of lunchtime.
Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 may order recess through class baskets and buy snacks and drinks
over the counter at lunchtime.
You can also order online via Our Online Canteen (now called QuickCliq) - information can be found
here.
While the weather is still perfect for gardening and outdoor learning,
it's time for season change in the school garden. The tomatoes
have mostly finished and the four pumpkin plants that have been so
productive have been harvested and stored for future use.
We have used some of our
compost to feed the soil while we
plant out new crops. If you think
the garden is looking a bit bare, have a closer look! We have had classes
helping plant carrot seeds, autumn seedlings, snowpeas and some paw
paw trees. Thank you 1D, KM and 1H for
your help!
The best part of the classes visiting has
been the excitement in the children's faces
when they see the bees, ladybugs, taste
some herbs, plant or just dig looking for
worms. This is the reason that we want the school kitchen garden. To
provide an outdoor living classroom to ignite their passion for learning and
enjoy nature.
12 months ago, the garden was a mess of weeds with some lemons on
the tree. Today, it is a beautiful and
bountiful garden. What are your dreams for
the school garden? What would you like to
see grow? Let us know via P&C or a leave
message in the office.
KM had a glorious day in the garden on
Tuesday with Mrs Healy. She very kindly
explained what certain plants and bugs
were in the garden. We scattered some
carrots seeds and we are looking forward
to eating them when they are ready. Mrs
Healy also gave us magnifying glasses,
watering cans and digging equipment to
further explore our school garden. Many
thanks Mrs Healy for your time and
knowledge!
Blue Mountains City Council has recently received concerns from the community regarding students riding
their bicycles through busy pedestrian areas such as Blaxland town centre. To improve the safety of both
pedestrians and bicycle riders, the Blaxland village will become a “dismount zone” whereby cyclists
will be required to dismount and walk their bicycles.
All bicycle riders are still permitted to use the existing shared path between Hope Street,
Blaxland and Ross Street, Glenbrook which follows the Great Western Highway and
Wascoe Street. Children under the age of 12 can also legally ride on all footpaths in
New South Wales, but must give way to pedestrians and ride at a safe speed. When
riding on a footpath or shared path, you should keep to the left at all times unless it is
impractical to do so, and you should use your bell or horn to signal your presence to
others.
For more information on bicycle related road rules, please click here.
