WELCOME

The Great British Summer of 2012 is officially over but as the nights draw in, the fireworks begin with our cracking Autumn season.

Our main features offer a diverse line-up of highly anticipated films. October brings Walter Salles’ adaptation of On The Road as well as the critically acclaimed Beasts of the Southern Wild. Cannes gem Rust and Bone opens November, followed by Michael Haneke’s Palme D’Or winner Amour. The month closes with Paul Thomas Anderson’s controversial The Master, recently shown at the Venice Film Festival, featuring the ever-dependable Philip Seymour Hoffman and a welcome return to form by Joaquin Phoenix.

The 2012-13 season of the Met Opera Live in HD launches in October and is joined by performances from NT Live and the Bolshoi Ballet. Other special events include an Asghar Farhadi double bill, Minima’s live-accompanied Nosferatu and a Hallowe’en screening of Dario Argento’s Suspiria in association with Dark City Gallery, as well as a family screening for Remembrance Sunday of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful.

Finally, we are delighted to welcome back The UK Jewish Film Festival for another year at The Phoenix, presenting a fantastic selection of UK Premieres, short films and Q&As.

- Neil Rebak, General Manager

FRIDAY 5 OCTOBER - THURSDAY 11 OCTOBER

Liberal Arts (12A)

1hr 37. US 2012. Directed by Josh Radnor. With Josh Radnor, Elizabeth Olsen, Zac Efron.

Writer and director Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) plays Jesse Fisher, a 35-year-old disillusioned with his career and depressed about his love life. On visiting his now-retiring former college professor (played by Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins) he meets a young student, Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen, Martha Marcy May Marlene), who reinvigorates him despite his reservations about the gaps in their age and maturity. The warm and witty script treats Jesse’s navel-gazing with gentle cynicism and he starts to realise the universal truth as told by his professor: “Nobody feels like an adult.”

HISTORY OF THE PHOENIX

The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all.

The other unique aspect of the Phoenix Cinema is that since 1985 it has been a cinema of the community, run by a charitable trust for the community. Saved from the wrecker’s ball by the formation of The Phoenix Cinema Trust, it is a wholly independent single screen cinema showing the latest independent and foreign films and reinvesting its profits in education work and maintaining this historic building.

On The Road (TBC)

FRIDAY 12 OCTOBER - THURSDAY 18 OCTOBER

2hr 17 approx. France/UK/US/Brazil 2012. Directed by Walter Salles. With Viggo Mortensen, Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart.

Renowned director Walter Salles takes on Jack Kerouac’s classic Beat Generation novel. British actor Sam Riley (Brighton Rock, Control) stars alongside Kristen Stewart (Adventureland, Into The Wild) and Garret Hedlund (Eragon, Tron: Legacy) in Kerouac’s loosely autobiographical stories of his time travelling across 1940s and 1950s America. Fuelled by jazz, poetry, drugs and drink, On The Road - including fictionalised characters based on Beat legends Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs and Neal Cassady, amongst others - describes a post-war generation trying to discover its place in the world.

FROM FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER

Beasts of the Southern Wild (12A)

1hr 33. US 2012. Directed by Benh Zeitlin. With Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly.

As the ice-caps melt, and the waters slowly rise to threaten her bayou home in an area of Louisiana known as the Bathtub, Hushpuppy (an acclaimed debut from Quvenzhané Wallis) and her ailing father (Dwight Henry) struggle to survive against environmental breakdown and the emergence of strange prehistoric predators (the “aurochs“). As Hushpuppy searches for the mother whom she has never met, Behn Zeitlin’s film, highly acclaimed at this year’s Sundance Festival, provides a poetic and elegiac portrait of America after an unspecified catastrophe.

FRIDAY 26 OCTOBER - THURSDAY 1 NOVEMBER

To Rome with Love (12A)Ginger and Rosa (12A)

1hr 52. US/Italy/Spain 2012. Dir. Woody Allen. With Woody Allen, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni.

Following the Oscar-winning success of last year’s Midnight In Paris, Phoenix favourite Woody Allen’s recent cinematic tour of major European cities moves on to Rome, in a portmanteau film featuring four separate stories playing out against the backdrop of the Italian capital.

1hr 30. UK/Denmark/Canada/2012. Dir. Sally Potter. With Elle Fanning, Christina Hendricks, Annette Bening, Jodhi May, Timothy Spall.

As the 1960s begin to swing, two young women born and raised in post-war Britain find their seemingly unbreakable friendship challenged by teenage rebellion and the unseen threat of nuclear war.

Sally Potter directs a stellar cast with outstanding performances from the young protagonists.

FRIDAY 2 NOVEMBER - THURSDAY 15 NOVEMBER

Rust & Bone (15)

2hr 03. France/Belgium 2012. Directed by Jacques Audiard. With Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Armand Verdure.

After moving from Belgium to Antibes so that his sister can help him care for his young son, feckless bouncer and bare-knuckle fighter Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts, Bullhead) falls into a friendship with killer whale trainer Stephanie (Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, La Vie En Rose). When she is permanently injured in an accident, their relationship develops into something deeper as Ali tries to help her adjust to her new reality. Director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, The Beat My Heart Skipped) was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes for this passionate and moving love story.

FRIDAY 16 NOVEMBER - THURSDAY 22 NOVEMBER

Amour (Love) (12A)

2hrs 07. Austria/France/Germany 2012. Directed by Michael Haneke . With Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert.

Michael Haneke won his second Cannes Palme d’Or (after 2009’s The White Ribbon, and nominations for Hidden and Funny Games) with Amour, starring Jean-Louis Trintignant (Three Colours: Red), Emanuelle Riva (Hiroshima Mon Amour) and Isabelle Huppert (The Piano Teacher). Riva and Trintignant play Georges and Anne, retired music teachers struggling to adjust to Anne’s progressive dementia, with their daughter (Huppert) providing little support. Acclaimed as a master of modern European cinema, Haneke turns his unflinching gaze to questions of memory, love and loss - as a person’s identity seems to slip away, what remains of the love they have shared with others?

FROM FRIDAY 23 NOVEMBER

The Master (Rating TBC)

Running time TBC. US 2012. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. With Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams.

The much-anticipated, controversial film which first screened at the 2012 Venice Film Festival features Joaquin Phoenix as mentally fragile World War II veteran Freddie Quell working for Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Lancaster Dodd: the charismatic leader of a new, science-based faith. “The Master” treats his acolyte as a pet project, exploiting his weaknesses both for his advantage and his own amusement. However, Dodd cannot quite get to the heart of Quell, whose inner life is even more turbulent than the exterior shows.

Described as an “utterly absorbing psychological drama” by The Guardian, this promises to be one of the films of the year.
