One of the strongest ideals of Romanticism is that of Nationalism, which still endures today.

Transcendentalism

Cultural movement Founded by: George Putnam, Ralph Waldo

Emerson, and Frederick Henry Hedge Equally a religious movement. Believed that God transcended everything. Began with English intellectuals

Utilitarianism

The philosophy that the use of an object or action determine the morality of it.

Stated as, “The ends justify the means”

The basic idea of Utilitarianism is to do a cost / benefit measurement. You could, for example, use 9/11.

Cost: People died.

Benefit: America and the world united to destroy terrorism

Note: Every judgment made using Utilitarianism is opinion based.

Mormonism (a.k.a. The Latter Day Saint Movement)

Founded by Joseph Smith in 1823 based on another book that was never put into the bible.

The book was received by Smith who got it from an angel.

Believes that God was once a human, that eventually, through a process, become a god.

The angel Moroni, that gave the book to Smith, is hailed as something akin to the Virgin Mary, in Catholicism.

Contains an estimated 4 million members worldwide.

Positivism

Says that there are three stages that man goes through in terms of religion. Early times

Belief in god is prominent among the people. Mid times

Belief in the metaphysical is the current state of religion.

Modern/Future times Belief in god and the metaphysical becomes outdated

or obsolete and people rely on science.
