(The message sent by Shri B.N.Sarma on the occasion of theWorkshop organised by Janajati Faithand Culture Protection Forum at Diphuon 27-29 Jan.2012)

I must mention contextually thatthough abysmally limited byknowledge, study and persuasion, Ihave given to myself a sense to at leasttouch the periphery of a vast subjectlike philosophy and spirituality ofEternal religion and Eternal culture ofthe esteemed and vibrant Janajatis ofmy favourite district Karbi Anglong. Ihave only a misty concept about thedepth of vastness of the most beautifullives of the janajatis of this district, about whom I have begun to optimizemy study day by day, of course throughthe writing of the eminent people andwriters, who have spent their invaluabletime to research and establish thedetails, greatness, magnanimities andhidden treasures of the religions, following and rich cultural legacies, which are colourful, vibrant andconquering.

Here comes a reference to one ofthe great physicists of our time. He isFritjof Kapra – who is undoubtedly apioneer in the exploration of theparallels between modern physics andEastern Mysticism. May I say to yourhonor that the mysticism is also a partof religious philosophy with its virtuesand comprehensive elaboration! In hisworld-famous book ‘the Tao ofphysics’, he has explored all thedetails of spirituality visa vis thephilosophy of physics that governsmatter, a constituent of human body, even of brain. The reality of the atomicphysicist, as he has pointed out is akinto the reality of the Eastern Mysticcovering the North Eastern region ofIndia, transcendences and the narrowframework of opposite concepts andto cite an instance the words ofupanishades:

It moves. It moves not.It is far and it is nearIt is within all this,And it is outside all of this.I am very happy and elated to say

Philosophy and S piritual thought s for Preservation of Identity AmidstDifferent Ethnic T ribes of Karbi Anglong

that our own KarbiAnglong district canboast of global manifestation so farethnicity and cultural greatnessimbibed in the janajatis tribes, havingperhaps no parallels in India. So fardiversities are concerned pertaining tothe distinctions of Karbi, Dimasa,Naga, Bodo-kacharies, Kukis, Hmarand many other tribes in the mattersof religious following, rituals, art andculture, legacies and traditions. All areresiding peacefully as if to renderutmost credentials to the concepts ofone India, as has been projected in thepreamble of the constitution, whichreads as ‘We the people of India havingsolemnly resolved to constitute Indiainto a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, Republic and to secure toall its citizens justice – social, economical and political, liberty ofthought, expression, belief, faith andworship, equality of status and ofopportunity and to promote amongthem all the dignity of the individual andthe unity and integrity of the nation.Let me say and utter boldly that weare making India march forwardtowards peace and harmony, admittingthe unity amidst diversity amidst manydiscipline like political school, pursuitof religion without fear, upkeep oftraditions and legacies with heightenedmorality right from the days of theVedas till now. Our heritage, cultureand traditions are very old, but stable. This is a contribution of Indian psyche,a unique oneness. It explicitly provesthat our faith and belief about spirituallyand philosophy are very strong, close– knit and resistive to any corruption.

It has become possible in KarbiAnglong amidst all the tribes becauseof the fact that their philosophy of lifestands deep-rooted and every janajatiis scared of being rootless. FritjofKapra has noted with concern that dueto enigmatic reasons there haveoccurred some splits both verticallyand horizontally in the society so fartheir attachment with religions andspiritual approaches are concerned. Hehas collected some of the reasons.Though time is marching ahead, but it

appears that it has remained the samelike 500 years back or 2 lakhs yearsback. May there be a forward motionof time, as Stephen Hawking has put,but in fact this marching is much moreprominent in the galaxy of humans, because they have changed. Somechanges even do not bow toexplanation. Due to rapid intruding ofmaterialism, exhibitionism, unequalcompetition and famed globalization, peoples’ dynamics towards hedonismhas become very speedy, butimmature. The changes in the approachof life and life-style are welcome –butit should not mean that we have to partwith our valued traditions, legacies andfaith as well as religion. Change ofreligious attitude is good if it can makesociety free from prejudice. Butdiachotomy and aberrations are notwelcome. If we become rootless byforgetting our social traditions andleave our century-old religious faithwithin a ziffy for no good reason andplausibility, then we will be loosing ourgrounds. The tribe, the nation will thenrun through Scylla and Charibdis.

These things should be carefullyconsidered and reconsidered in apluralistic human-pattern of our KarbiAnglong district. As this is a significantdistrict for being the abode of manytribes, outmost responsibility of eachof the tribes should be their holisticaffinity and efforts of aggrandizementto make themselves more developedwithin the ‘Sanatan religious Pantha’they are following. Religiously rootlesssociety at ‘onetime may lose theiridentity – as has happened in someparts of our country. Loosing identitywill mean the loss of cultural identityalso and if such unholy things happenthe rootlessness will invite completeannihilation and extinction. God forbid-this should not happen.

I earnestly hope – the janajati faithand cultural protection forum will beendeavoring to bridge any gapdetrimental to unification in Karbisociety and others too.

(Spirituality can never beuprooted from India (Thinkstockphotos/Getty Images))

Spirituality is so deeplyingrained in India that it can neverbe uprooted from this country, says a leading American yogaguru who has spent six decadesspreading Kriya Yoga and‘Sanatan Dharma’.

The widely travelled SwamiKriyananda says that yogis andgod seekers have so intenselymeditated for thousands of yearsin this country that one can feelspirituality even in the air.

“India, of all ancient cultures, has clung to the highest truth, thatgod is the only reality, that thisuniverse is His dream, and thatour duty is to reunite our soulswith Him,” the 85-year-old said inan interview.

“That is why so many greatsouls have been born (in India),”he added.

Kriyananda, one of the fewdirect followers of the iconicParamhansa Yogananda who arestill alive, however, finds Indiamore materialistic todaycompared to his first visit wayback in 1958.

“But it is a necessary step forIndia,” Kriyananda, who wasoriginally J. Donald Walters, said.“She needs to take her rightfulplace among the great nations ofthe world.

“But she will never be able toescape her spiritual roots. She willbecome more intensely spiritualthan before - in time.

“No, I don’t really feel as athome in India today as I felt 50years ago. But that will change.”

Kriyananda was 22 years oldand a callow American in his ownwords when he met theGorakhpur-born Yogananda in1948 in Los Angeles and instantlybecame his disciple.

This happened after he hadread Yogananda’s “Autobiography

Spirituality can never be Uprootedfrom India

of a Yogi”, one of the mostcelebrated works in spiritualliterature.

Kriyananda spent four yearswith Yogananda until the latter diedin 1952. Since then, he has spentmore than six decades espousing‘Sanatan Dharma’, Kriya Yoga andways to meditate — all based onYogananda’s teachings.

In 2003, he shifted to India witha small band of American andIndian disciples. All of them haveworked silently on the spiritual frontwithout hankering after publicity.

Kriyananda, who will release inMumbai Jan 8 his just publishedbiography of Yogananda, considershimself more Indian than Americansince his own Guru was an Indian.

“I have had an opportunity tomeet many great souls (in India). To me, the greatest saint I ever metwas my own guru,” he said ofYogananda, who was born in 1893into a spiritually inclined middleclass Bengali family.

Apart from authoring over 140books, Kriyananda has composedmore than 400 pieces of music, taken around 15,000 photographsand set up eight spiritualcommunities.

He has travelled extensively inIndia, meeting holy men and saints. These have included yoga masterswho have lived for over 100 years.

And despite failing health anda recent blood transfusion,Kriyananda has just finished a workof fiction and is working onproducing three movies, includingone on Yogananda.

The American, who speaksBengali too, does not believe hecan be called a Western spiritualexport to India.

“I first came to India inSeptember 1958. For me, it waslike coming home. I know Ibelonged here. I had always felt astranger elsewhere.”

How much more will the Assamese people haveto lose? How much sacrifice will they have to do?How much atrocity will they have to bear?

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) hasonce again started its terror activities. The questionis, what is the ULFA’s goal?

The ULFA claims to be fighting for Assam’s‘freedom’. But have they ever thought that the worstsufferers of their terror activities are the people ofAssam. The innocent people of this State havealways become the victims of their violence. Formore than three decades the ULFA has beencarrying out an ‘armed struggle’ for Assam’s‘freedom’ but has this ‘armed struggle’ helped themtake a single step towards achieving their goal?

A large chunk of the ULFA leadership, includingits chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, realized the futilityof this ‘armed struggle’ and came forward for talks. But the anti-talk faction of the ULFA has again letloose a reign of terror and violence in the State. Thepeople of Assam will again have to live in fear andendure atrocities. Has the ULFA’s ‘armed struggle’helped the people of this State in any way? Theanswer is a big ‘NO’.

On the one hand, gun wielding militants arelooting money from the people and on the otherhand, businessmen and bureaucrats from themainland are looting Central Government fundsmeant for Assam’s development and taking the fundmoney out of the State. In fact, insurgents also geta share of the funds meant for the State’sdevelopment.

The ULFA’s ‘armed struggle’is only pushing theindigenous people of Assam towards destruction. The influx of Bangladeshi immigrants is posing athreat to the identity of the indigenous people. Inter-State migration is also posing a serious threat tothe State. Because of the aggression of foreignersand people from the mainland, the indigenousAssamese people are slowly losing their land andproperty. If this trend continues, all traces of theAssamese civilization will soon be wiped away.

Bangladeshi immigrants are out to wipe awaythe identity of the Assamese people and ironically, for years the ULFA leadership took shelter inBangladesh and dreamt of a ‘free’ Assam. What isworse, Bangladesh, with help from the AssamGovernment, is out to grab Assam’s land. In sucha situation, how can the ULFA talk of Assam’s‘freedom’?

Whether the ULFA’s fight against theGovernment of India will help them fulfil their dreamof a ‘free’ Assam is their matter of concern. Whatthey should understand is that their activities areharming the people of Assam. How much more willthe Assamese people have to lose? How muchsacrifice will they have to do? How much atrocitywill they have to bear? (The Sentinel-02.01.12)

What actually is the ULF A’s goal?

The Government of India through aresolution has provided a sub-quota of4.5 per cent for socially, educationallyand backward classes of citizensbelonging to minorities in the 27 per centOBC reservation has undermined notonly the spirit of Constitution of India butalso subvert the various judgments ofthe Hon’ble Supreme Court of India aswell as without any authority under anylaw specifically under NationalCommission for Minorities Act 1992 andNational Commission for BackwardClasses Act, 1993.

The Ist attempt for including religiousreservation was set-aside by the Hon’bleApex Court in the case of State ofMadras Vs. Champakam Dorairajanreported in 1951 SCR 525 and also inthe recent judgment Ashok KumarThakur Vs. Union of India reported, 2008(6) SCC 1 at page 698, wherein the Courthas stated that:

“603. To be clear, there is no claimarising out of the goal to promote acasteless society. No right of actionexists. The right of action is found insecularism, through not explicitly foundin the unamended Constitution, theoriginal Frames made it clear that Indiawas to be a secular democracy.Discrimination based on religion isprohibited by Article 14, 15(1) and 15(2),16(1) and 16(2), 29(2) and 325”.

Reservation under the scheme ofConstitution of India is provided underArticle 15(4) which states that “nothingin this article or clause (2) of article 29shall prevent the State from making anyspecial provision for the advancementof any socially and educationallybackward classes of citizens or for theScheduled Caste and ScheduledTribes”. The said wording are veryspecific and conclusive to the effect thatthere cannot be any reservation on thebasis of two criteria i.e. “Socially andEducationally” (both inclusive). Theword “Religion” is deliberately missingby the wisdom of framers of Constitution. It can be stated with the authority thatConstitution of India does not provide ormandate any reservation which is basedon religion.

Hon’ble Supreme Court in numberof cases has stated that religion in itselfis not a class and cannot fall within the

Religion Based Reservation a Fraud on Constitution By Bhupendra Yadav

category of Article 15 and 16 as a criteriaof reservation. [State of A.P. Vs. P.Sagar,1968 (3) SCR 595], [Triloki Nath TikkuVs. State of J&K 1969 (1) SCR 103].

The Government of India vide aResolution is trying to insert religion tobe the basis of reservation. Article 340of the Constitution of India provides forappointment of a Commission toinvestigate the conditions of thebackward classes. However, the samewas not appointed till the 9 JudgesConstitution Bench of Hon’ble SupremeCourt in the matter of Indra SawhneyVs. Union of India, 1993 Supp (3) SCC217 after considering the variousprovisions has directed in paragraph 861at page 771 that “a permanent body besetup for inclusion and other ancillarysubjects for other backward classes”.On this direction National Commissionfor Backward Classes Act,1993 wasenacted and a National Commission forBackward Classes has been instituted. The said Commission has the object forinclusion of any backward class. Theword religion is missing in the entire actand there is nothing in the act fromwhere it can be remotely sense that anyreservation can be made on the basisof religion. The Government of India hasnot taken into consideration the AnnualReports of the National Commission forBackward Classes for the year 2007-2008 wherein certain OBC Castes/Communities have been included invarious States, including amongst theother religion also.

The report of National Commissionfor Religious and Linguistic Minorities(Rangnath Commission) in paragraph 26(Chapter-VI) has given statistics aboutthe backward classes, as per religionbasis. The break-up states Hindus-2083,Muslims-52, Christian-22 and Sikhs-2(total 2159) i.e. the OBC communitiesin Muslims are proportionally very lowand as such the Religious Reservationto OBC Muslims to the extent of 4.5per cent is very high in terms ofpopulation also.

In the FAQ (Frequently AskedQuestion found on the website ofBackward Class Commission) in replyto “whether backward sections of thereligious minorities are also eligible forinclusion in the list of OBC’s? The reply

states that “…….when a caste/community or group in the list it isincluded irrespective of the religion ordenomination followed by the membersof that caste/community or group”. Thesaid reply clearly indicates thatreservation can be made only to the OBCas a class not as a religious OBC as aclass. In other words the classificationamongst the OBC on the basis of religionis arbitrary as well as without any nexusto its object. The object must be theeradication of social and educationalbackwardness, which cannot be adetriment on the basis of particularreligion.

The Supreme Court has consistentlyheld that the power to provide forreservations for backward classes underArticle 15 and 16 is an enabling power, but if the State is exercising the powerof providing reservations for designatedbackward classes, it has to demonstratethe existence of backwardness andinadequacy of representation of thebackward classes in public services. These are constitutional conditionprecedents that have to be satisfied bythe State. Word religion is “neutral” inthe reservation but they are givenreservation on the basis of social, educational and economicbackwardness as backward classes, asmentioned in the Article 15(4).

The report of the Backward ClassCommission 1980 (Mandal Commission)in its para 12.18 (page 56 of Vol-1)evolved the following criteria foridentifying non-Hindu OBC:- (a) Alluntouchables converted to any non-Hindu religion; and (b) Such occupationalcommunities which are known by thename of their traditional hereditaryoccupation and whose Hinducounterparts have been included in thelist of Hindu OBCs. (examples, Dhobi,Teli, Dheemar, Nai, Gujar, Kumhar,Lohar, Darji, Badhai, etc).(para 12.17)

None of the Act or report has providedany recommendation for OBCreservation only on religious basis. Theattempt of the Union of India will destroythe very basic backbone of Indian Societyi.e. the Constitution of India is a secularand discrimination based on religion isprohibited. The ISI hand has now become sovisible in Assam that it will soonbecome justifiable for people to askwhether the Centre regards theNortheast as a part of India or not. What is very well known is that the ISIof Pakistan has forged strong linkswith the ULFA over the last threedecades. It is also well known how theISI flew out ULFA leaders and cadresfrom Bangladesh to Islamabad aftergiving them new names and gettingfake passports issued in their names. These leaders and cadres were trainedin the training camps for Pakistaniterrorists who have been routinely sentto India for subversive and terroristactivities. According to a source in theIntelligence Department, the ISIrecently spent over Rs 20 croretowards supplying arms to militantoutfits in Assam as well as to Maoistswho have lately started activities in theState. According to this source, massive hoards of the mostsophisticated weapons werestockpiled in two instalments in theKalishara area of Bangladesh. Theseweapons were handed over to militantoutfits of the Northeast separatelybetween April and November 2011. TheNLFT of Tripura got its weapons in thePheni area of the Indo-Bangladeshborder; the NDFB (Ranjan Daimarifaction) got its weapons at the bordernear Sylhet; the Garo rebel outfitGNLF got its weapons at the Sherpurborder area; the ULFA at theHaluwaghat border area; the NSCN(I-M) at Moulavibazar; the KLO of Assamat the Charonmola and Maheshkhaliborder areas. The handing over ofweapons is reported to have beencarried out by ISI agentG.K.Choudhury. Much of theinformation about the distribution ofweapons and other explosive detailsof the ISI’s plans are reported to havebeen found from documents seizedfrom the Indo-Bangladesh border by

The ISI Hand in Assam

intelligence agencies. Thesedocuments also reveal how a militantoutfit of lower Assam has been usedby the ISI to hand over weapons to theMaoists in Assam.

It is not enough for the HomeMinistry to be sending circulars to theHome departments of the north-easternStates to keep a close watch on thesecurity situation in their States. Sincemost of the sophisticated weaponsdistributed by the ISI have come intothe Northeast via Bangladesh, it isimperative that Union Home MinisterP.Chidambaram rescind his recentdirective to the BSF and the securityforces on the Indo-Bangladesh border(about not firing at intruders fromBangladesh under any circumstances)and have one standard norm for all ourinternational borders. Quite obviously, one cannot prevent the flow ofclandestine weapons to Assam andthe rest of the Northeast fromBangladesh if there is an open border. When we know that the ISI is operatingagainst India not only from Pakistanbut from Bangladesh as well, it isimportant to have the same norms ofborder protection at both theinternational borders. As such, weneed to have the same shoot-at-sightdirectives for the BSF and othersecurity forces along the Indo-Bangladesh border as we do along theIndo-Pakistan border. This is all themore important after the recent attacksby Bangladeshi nationals on oursecurity forces along the border andthe failure of the BSF to retaliate inview of the Home Minister’s directive.Bangladesh must be told in nouncertain terms that as long as Dhakapermits an enemy of India to operatefrom Bangladesh, the same stringentborder security norms will have to applyfor the Indo-Bangladesh border as forthe Indo-Pakistan border.

Renowned historian and former headof the Indian Council of Historic Research(ICHR), Dr MGS Narayanan has said thatthe visit of St Thomas to India and theIslamic conversion of King CheramanPerumal are cock and bull storiespropagated by Christians and Muslims. Hewas speaking at the Malayalam weekcelebrations of Kerala Sahitya Parishad.

“St Thomas is a direct disciple of Christ. That was during the first century. Therewas no Nampoothiri Community (Brahmin)in Kerala then. How can St Thomas convertNampoothiri’s into Christianity when theywere non-existent? Even Pope has notofficialised St Thomas’ visit to India. Themyth is that he visited Latin, Almaya,Syria, later went to Hindi, established linkwith Ghondakaras and proceeded towardseast. Ghondakaras king ruled over presentAfghanistan where Takshashila wasthriving”.

“Only after Portughese rule, did

St Thomas V isit and Chera King’ s conversion to Islam Conversion, through cock and bull stories

- Dr MGS Narayanan

Christianity come to Kerala i.e. after 15thcentury Even in Portughese ‘Suhahados’ StThomas’ arrival has not been mentioned. Togive more credence to Christianity’s ancienthierarchy, this false Nampoothiri lineage andSt Thomas converting them is beingtrumpeted”

“Similarly Muslims are spreading themyth that Cheraman Perumal (Chera king)went to Mecca and was directly madeIslamic by the Prophet. Prophet belonged tothe 7th Century. Cheraman Kings ruledbetween 9th and 12th century. How can thenCheraman Perumal go to Mecca and adoptIslam after seeing prophet directly?”

Dr MGS lamented that the IndianHistorical Congress has become a feeder-organisation of CPM, right from 1985, andall sorts of lies are being propagated, affecting the culture and traditions of Bharat. He blamed Sumit Sarkar for Marxising IHC.

Badruddin Ajmal has ventured farfrom his home ground in Assam.Ratnadip Choudhury tracks hiselectoral forays..

IN THE 2006 Assembly poll inAssam, a new political force emerged:Badruddin Ajmal, then 56. He waselected from two constituencies -south Salmara and Jamunamukh - witha huge margin. His party, the AssamUnited Democratic Front (AUDF), wonas many as 10 seats.

Soon, the regional party acquirednational ambitions. Renamed the AllIndia United Democratic Front (AIUDF),it became the main opposition partyin Assam after winning 18 seats in the2011 Assembly polls. Its founder-president Ajmal, born in Gopalnagar,Nagaon district, has never looked backafter forming the minority political outfit. He has a master’s in Islamic theologyand Arabic from Darul Uloom, Deoband, and continues to be a member of itsexecutive council (Majlis-e-Shoora).His successful attar (perfume) empireflourishes on exports to the MiddleEast. He also runs a charity, MarkazulMa’arif.

This Bangla-speaking MP fromDhubri in lower Assam, the lone LokSabha member for his party, won theseat by defeating sitting MP AnowarHussain of the Congress. Brandishingthe sword of minority politics, he notonly poses a big challenge to the rulingCongress in Assam but has alsotasted blood in Kerala and is set toplay a role in the Uttar PradeshAssembly polls.

“We have a good support base therebut will not contest any seat. We arein touch with national parties and mightcampaign for them as well,” Ajmalrevealed to TEHELKA on the sidelinesof a party rally in Dudhnoi in Goalparadistrict. He has been adroit atperforming this balancing act since2005.

Post independence, the Congressalways won polls in Assam based onits support among the tea tribes andthe minorities. With the AGP shrillyanti-foreigner and the BJP seeking

refugee status for BanglaspeakingHindus, Ajmal positioned himself asthe guardian of minorities. For threedecades, he was known to be a ‘closeaide’ of the Congress, at least inpolitical circles.

“Ajmal’s primary idiom is religion,”explains Subir Bhaumik, a Guwahati-based political analyst. “He seeks totake away Muslim support from thenational and regional parties, accusingthem of using the Muslim only as avote bank. He seeks to give theminority a jhanda (flag) and a jamaat(party) of its own.”

In 2011, the AIUDF supported theIndian Union Muslim League in Kerala. The League increased its tally fromeight to 20. No wonder, it has beenemboldened to throw its hat in the UPring. Explains Aminul Islam, a generalsecretary of the AIUDF, “We havereceived a lot of requests from otherminority parties from UP, some newlyformed. They want the AIUDF to leada united front of smaller parties. UPhas 56 Muslim MLAs. A huge sectionof them wants AIUDF presence. Ourparty will take a call on this.”

Critics of Ajmal’s brand of minoritypolitics abound. “When AIUDF in itselection manifesto says that it wantsland for char dwellers (sand islandsoccupied by mostly illegal migrants, particularly on the Brahmaputra), it isclear whom it is helping. It is cheapvote bank politics,” criticises seniorAGP leader Atul Bora.

Even in his own community, therehas been rancour. The Jamait-Ulema-e-Hind, which he used to woo Muslimmigrants, expelled Ajmal ahead of the2011 Assam polls on charges of usingthe organisation for political gain. Butat the grassroots, he has loyalfollowers. “There has been nodevelopment of the minorities in Assamunder the Congress. If he is asking forvotes for the development of Muslims, then there is no harm,” says RazakAli, a farmer.

BUT POLITICS is not such a simplegame. Congress insiders haveconfirmed to TEHELKA that the party

did receive a proposal from Ajmal toform an alliance in UP. “In politics, there is no permanent friend or foe,”senior AIUDF leader Sirajuddin Ajmaltold reporters in Guwahati. “So we canenter into an alliance to ensure theinterests of the minorities areprotected.” On its part, the Congresshigh command has been keen on analliance right from 2006, but TarunGogoi and Muslims in the AssamCongress oppose the idea.

Reports from UP say the AIUDFhas set tough conditions for a possibleelectoral alliance with the Congress. The AIUDF wants Chief Minister Gogoiand Forest Minister Rockybul Hussainto be removed and the harassment ofBengali Muslims settled in Assam tobe stopped.

“Since the quashing of the IllegalMigrants Act, the police is harassinginnocents by accusing them of beingforeigners. Once arrested, the onuslies on them to prove that they areIndian nationals,” says Ajmal. “Even aformer MLA was arrested.”

“It is true that I enjoy a goodpersonal rapport with many seniorcentral Congress leaders, but I havenot approached them, neither havethey,” he says, responding to mediareports of a ‘secret tie-up’ with theCongress. “There is no question of analliance; from 2005 we have beenstruggling for the rights of the poor, backward class and minorities inAssam. We have supported policiesof the UPA at the Centre and not theCongress party in particular.”

With influence in Meerut,Saharanpur and Moradabad, theAIUDF might have a role to play in UPif an understanding is reached with theCongress. Doing so, however, will meanthat Ajmal might lose his charsupporters, who may not understandhis motives in tying up with the enemyin another state. It is a tightrope thathe has to walk carefully - that ofbalancing a set support base with aprospective one.

The Chinese have been goading the militantgroups of the NorthEast region to come to acommon platform. Though the Government ofIndia has been taking up the issue with theChinese counterpart, the Government of thatcountry always denies the reports.

Sources said that the ultra groups, whichare in the new process of unification include hardline faction of the United Liberation Front ofAsom (ULFA), Ranjan Daimary faction of theNational Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB),Khaplang faction of the NSCN and groups basedin Manipur. Though the NSCN (I-M) wasmaintaining close ties with China, the outfit isnot in the recent scheme of things.

MHA sources admitted that the situation inManipur is a cause of concern and that is whyaround 360 companies of central paramilitaryforces have been deployed to deal with thesituation. The valley based militant groups ofManipur would definitely try to make an impacton the polls and in fact they have already startedmaking efforts in this direction. Though thosegroups are not directly supporting any politicalparty, they are all opposing the ruling Congress. On the other hand, members of the NSCN (I-M)are trying to create trouble in the Hill areas ofManipur. China Trying to Make NEUltras Join Hands

SIVASAGAR, Jan 13: “Declaring Assam a tribal State wasessential to preserve the identity of the indigenous tribes andcommunities as continuous influx of illegal migrants was posing agreat danger to the existence of the Assamese society”, said veteranCPI leader Promode Gogoi today.

Gogoi, while addressing a press conference at the CPI’s partyoffice , the former Minister said, “If nothing is done now, Assam’sdemographic scenario will soon be changed and the local people willbe outnumbered by the settlers who will dominate the State in all therespects.” “There would be restrictions, as in other States of theNortheast which have been declared tribal, on buying and selling ofland and property and suspected illegal migrants would not havepolitical rights”, Gogoi added.

Demanding the inclusion of Assam under Article 371 (A) of theConstitution of India, Gogoi said, “Since Nagaland is under Article371(A), she has right over its natural resources. Then why has Assambeen deprived of enjoying its natural resources.” Gogoi also demandedto include Assam under Article 370 of the Constitution of India asonly Jammu and Kashmir is enjoying this Special Constitutional right.

Urging the State government to do the necessary paperwork sothat six tribes of the State, Tai Ahoms, Koch Rajbongshi, Moran,Muttok, Tea tribe and Chutia could be declared Scheduled Tribes (P)as recommended by Parliamentary Select Committee in 1997 andthe Assam Assembly, Gogoi said, “This would only facilitate thegranting of tribal status to Assam.”

The veteran leader also appealed all the Political parties, people’sorganizations and prominent intellectuals to take up independentlyand jointly to put pressure on the Government of India to accept thejust demand of the people of Assam. (The Sentinel - 14.01.12)

Declare Assam a ‘T ribal S tate’for it s Safeguard

Silence please! The gods aremeditating in Himachal villlage

Manali (Himachal Pradesh), Jan 28 :Visitors to Goshal village and nine tinyhamlets located in its vicinity in Kulludistrict have been warned not to make anoise as the ‘gods’ are in deep meditation.

Every year, life in these villages - with apopulation not more than 10,000 - almostcomes to a grinding halt for 42 days fromMakar Sankranti. The residents stoplistening to music, watching television andeven tilling their lands.

“This is a very auspicious time whenour chief deity is ‘in deep meditation’. Wehave no right to disturb him. If the god getsdisturbed, it will bring ill luck,” 63-year-oldTikkam Ram of Goshal village, fourkilometres from Manali town, told IANS.

The chief deity he is referring to is SageGautam. The other major deitiesworshipped in the area include SageVyasa and Kanchan Nag, a serpent deity.

“We have been fol lowing thisunique practice of self- imposedrestrictions for centuries,” he added.

As per tradition, the doors of SageGautam’s temple in Goshal are closedannually on Makar Sankranti - it fell Jan 14

this year - when Gautam Rishi along withRishi Vyas and Kanchan Nag are believedto leave for their abodes for meditation. They return to the temple after a 42-day-long sojourn, the story goes.

The temple doors will be reopenedFeb 26, the day the deities ‘return’, andpeople will start their routine activities. VedRam, president of the temple committee, said the locals follow the legend religiously.“The villagers observe total silence duringthat period. Ceremonies like marriage arenot solemnised. The locals even keeptheir mobile ringtones off.”

Even outsiders are not exemptedfrom the injunctions. Visitors to Goshalvillage and the nine tiny hamlets arewarned not to make any noise as thedeities are in deep meditation. Anyactivity that creates noise would disturbthem, believe the locals. He said eveniron implements are not used inagricultural fields and orchards. Theentire area is otherwise known forgrowing delicious apples and maize.

Nirmal Devi, a resident of Panchalvillage, says: “The womenfolk normally sittogether during this period at one place, stitch clothes and knit woollens for the next

season. As these are noiseless activities, they are permitted.”

“It really offers a break from the routinelike tilling and cutting wood and fodder,”she added. Another local, Sheela Devi, says, “We will be back to routine choresonly after our deities ‘return’ to the templeand make a forecast”.

According to legend, the temple isclosed after spreading mud inside. It’s abelief that when the temple is reopenedand a flower surfaces on the spread mud,it symbolizes happiness for the villagers. If a charcoal appears, it indicates that thevillage is in store for some fire-relatedtragedy and in case of remains of grains,it indicates a good harvest.

The picturesque Kullu Valley is knownfor its local demigods and ancientshamanistic traditions that govern the livesof local residents.

Every village has several resident godsand goddesses which are invoked asliving deities.

The conduit between the deities andtheir devotees are the “gur” - traditionalshamans of Himachal who form the coreof spiritual sustenance. The gur mediatesbetween the people and the gods.

During the last one year allChristian churches in Kerala Catholic,Jacobite, Marthomite or otherdenominations are installing flagstaffor Kodimaram in the front courtyard. The treachery in this act is that thedesign of the staff and the foundationstructure on which the staff rests areall very similar to the ones adorningthe precincts of great Hindu templeslike Guruvayur, Vaikom, Ettumanur, SriPadmanabha Swamy Temple atThiruvananthapuram, Sabarimala etc.The only difference observed, as oneglances from the base upwards, is thepresence of the Cross atop thesestructures.

Another instance of cheap copyingis that of the Rudraksha, a very sacredbead of the Hindus. Rudraksha, inaddition to being considered a religioussymbol is believed to possessmedicinal properties. Now-a-daysChristians largely wear necklace withcrucifixes and rudraksha beadedtogether. Another blatant imitation isthe use of tulasi beads also in makingtheir rosaries.

The much adored and morerecently controversial saffron or kaavicloth being attributed to the so called‘Hindu Terror’ also has been plagurisedcleverly by the Christian priests, it isnot uncommon to see many Christianpriests to sport a saffron shawl overtheir regular cassock or loha, functioning from their monasteries thatnow are being called ashramams, another attempt to appeal to Hindusentiments. Very recently, manyviewers were shocked to see the fileshots of the annual Malayattoor festivalof the Christians, projecting scenes ofall pilgrims wearing saffron dhotis andshirts.

All these instances point anaccusing finger at the clergy which isinvolved in a deliberate, systematic and

- Dr Purushothama Bharathi

planned attempt to draw Hindu crowdsto their religion and get converted toChristianity.

One of the auspicious symbolsoccupying a Hindu home in SouthIndia (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) is theNilavilakku or traditional tall lamps withits glittering presence in any puja room. This lamp consumes gingely oil witha cotton wick or thiri which is lit. Theoil lamp was sacrilegious to Christiandogmas and kept at arms length inchurches and their homes. Sometraditional Christians claimingancestry to and upper caste Hindusin Kerala, called the Syrian Christians, nevertheless maintained the oldNilavilakkus in their homes. But it is amatter of surprise that the Churchleadership is now giving allencouragement and patronage tothese symbols whose mere sightswere considered taboos by the highpriests. There is active and strongencouragement systematicallyprovided by the heads of variousChristian denominations as an effectivetool to harvest more souls to theirreligion from innocent Hindus.

Even the most Hinduised practiceof yore, Vidhyaarambham, initiation ofchildren into learning is being observedthese days in most churches onVijaydashmi day. The Guru places theyoung child on his lap and squats onthe floor before a large round copperbowl containing rice. He then holds thetoddler’s hand and using the pointingfinger makes a writing on the rice, theholy letters of inspiration, Om HavilShri MahaGanapathaye NamahaAvignamasthu. Later the Guru willmildly scratch the tongue of the infantwith a golden ring with the words OmHari Shri Maha GanapathayeNamaha Avignamasthu. All theserituals are conducted with well litnilavillakus that are sacred witnessesto the holy ceremony. Now onVijaydashmi day Christians are doingsome mockery saying it is theirVidyarambham.

Hitherto all churches built in Indiafollowed the Gothic style ofarchitecture in every aspect of its

structure. This was highly resplendentof the worship places in Europe andother western countries. However, avisible departure from this pattern ofconstruction is on the cards whenchurches propose to blindly imitate theunique architecture of the Hindutemples. Plenty of money is raisedfrom within and abroad and used inextravagance to raise marvels inarchitecture only to impress andattract the weak and unwary Hindumind. All these practices aremeticulously adopted appropriately toperpetrate the Christian faith amongthe Hindu masses. The reward for thePope is the large scale harvesting ofsouls in Hindu India.

If Hindus do not resist the ignoblemove of the hijacking of Hindu symbolsby the missionaries, eventually historywould be rewritten to propagate thatthese symbols and icons of yore inIndia were all imbibed from ChristianWest. All symbols, practices andarchitecture of ancient India need tobe well safeguarded as personal Hinduproperty by adopting Global Patent.

If the Hindus do not retaliate andresist the gross plagiarism bynotorious Christian missionaries, a dayis not far off when even Lord JesusChrist would be addressed Mahadev. This is a term that technically doesnot characterise any ideology.Mahadeva in Sanskrit only conveys‘Great Lord’ and can even be ideal foilfor a secular addressing of GodAlmighty. But for the Hindus, there isonly one Mahadeva and that is LordShiva. Some years ago, there was aninstance of Christian missionaries inMalayasia addressing” Jesus as Allahto appeal to Muslim sentiments. Thisdeceit was instantly recognised by thealert Muslims who left no stoneunturned to give the warning that Jesusnot be addressed thus. The matterended then and there.

Hindus, by nature, in India are calmand non-fanatical in practicing theirreligion. They do not fiercely protecttheir faith or protest against suchunholy designs and schemes to causedemeanour or insults to their religion.

If anyone is euphoric over thesurrender of some 200 weapons by aband of 676 rebel cadres belonging toseven militant groups in the State, itis the Assam Police. A senior AssamPolice official has been quoted by asection of the media as saying thatthe State has been purged of all‘established’ insurgent groups with thelaying of arms on Tuesday inGuwahati. A daily quoted AdditionalDirector General of Police (SpecialBranch) Khagen Sarma as saying:“What is left are splinter groups andbreakaway factions of groups inceasefire. They have nothing butnuisance value…” He was also quotedas saying the Government would nowfast-track the peace process andreach settlements with the rebelgroups at the earliest.

If one is to take this statement bythe official seriously, it would meanthat Assam has become free frominsurgency. And if ‘splinter groups, deserters and breakaway factions’ arethe only remaining problem, then thesecurity establishment in Assam hasto deal with the following: the anti-talk ULFA faction headed by PareshBaruah; the NDFB faction headed byRanjan Daimary; the DHD (Dil ipNunisa faction) that is nowhere nearsigning a peace deal; the newDimasa splinter bands of armed men;the KLNLF in Karbi Anglong, and afew others. If that isn’t enough, Assamnow has a Maoist rebellion at hand,a rebellion that is threatening toassume dangerous proport ionsbecause the ‘red rebels’ have alreadyestablished links with the anti-talkULFA faction and Meitei insurgentgroups like the PLA.

Dealing with these splinter groups, deserters and breakaway factions’aside, of course, the Maoists, is goingto be a tall order for the security forcesin Assam. And the worst possiblescenario is that these groups couldwell be granted the much neededlegitimacy by none other than thepolice or a section within the policeforce or the Government itself. Thenwhat happens—yet another round ofso-called truce and a so-called peaceprocess. The cycle simply goes on.What today is sought to be dismissedas nothing but ‘splinter groups, deserters and breakaway factions’

Our beloved and patriotic leadersof RSS, should utilise the presentcorruption issue to overthrow the UPAGovernment as an opportunity to installa pro-Hindu Government using BabaRamdev and Anna Hazare. TheHindutva teeth of the RSS should besharpened to win over the huge waveof enemies of Motherland.

In India, a firm action to protect ourculture, the life spirit of the past, present and future generations are noteffectively seen. The internationalChristian lobby, few weeks beforedissected the African Nation, to makeSouth Sudan a Christian country. If weare idle, our North Eastern parts maygo that way in the near future.

Every year, hundreds of Christianmass prayer public meetings be heldin Kerala with the funds of foreignorganisations. On the final day, theorganisers of the meeting exhibit aman/woman who claims in public thathe/she had incurable diseasesdetected in leading hospital but he/shemiraculously got cured due to prayersto Jesus Christ. But it is a fact thatthere are several Bishops reclining inBishop Houses suffering from cancerand other incurable diseases and dyingwithout being saved by the miracle ofJesus. Not only Bishops, hundreds ofpriests and nuns are also sufferingfrom incurable diseases and slowlymoving to death not saved by theirAlmighty Jesus. It is the fact that theChristian propagandists are fooling thepoor and un-intellectual Hindus andconverting them to Christianity.

I questioned a Christian why hewas copying the symbols of Hinduismto which he replied that he is an Indianand is accepting the cultural symbolsof India like saffron, rudraksha, flagstaff, temple lamp and architecturaldesigns. Then I replied that if he wasproud of being an Indian, he shouldaccept the symbols of Hinduism andreject the foreign God (Jesus) to whomhe has pledged his soul. Otherwise, his acts of copying the symbols ofHinduism/Indian Culture is only acamouflage to propagate Christianity. He got terribly annoyed and violent andsimply left the scene.

Assam Rebels’ Arms Surrender No Cause for Cheer

could well be the key players ofinsurgent politics tomorrow with theGovernment joining the game ofplaying peace makers.

Both Chief Minister Tarun Gogoiand Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram, who flew down fromDelhi, sought to describe the armslaying event ‘historic.’ But what is‘historic’ is difficult to say because itis hard to believe that the Governmenthas any definite blueprint by way of aformula to each of these rebel groupswith which to resolve the problems. Thegroups whose cadres laid down armson Tuesday were the Santhal TigerForce, Adivasi People’s Army, AllAdivasi National Liberation Army, KukiLiberation Army, United KukigramDefence Army, Kuki RevolutionaryArmy, and the Hmar People’sConvention. The Birsa CommandoForce, and Adivasi Cobra Military ofAssam, were ‘active participants’ atTuesday’s event but did not actuallylay down weapons.

If anything, the so-called deal withthe UPDS in Karbi Anglong was afiasco. What is it that the Governmenthas given that is anything substantialin that deal? The UPDS did not evenget to contest the Council polls withan interim administration in placeunlike the erstwhile Bodo LiberationTiger rebels who got to rule at the newpolitico-administrative structure in aninterim arrangement before facing theelectorate. Going by precedent, oneis not euphoric about Tuesday’s armslaying event. Even the media hype wasmissing. Chief Minister Gogoi andUnion Home Minister Chidambaramdelivered boring and lacklusterspeeches. Actually, they came, sawbut did not commit anything.

If nothing concrete comes out ofshows like the one on Tuesday, insurgency can never be eliminatedfrom a state like Assam. TheGovernment must come up withserious solutions, solutions that havethe mechanism to last and prevent anew insurgency from brewing. Unlessthat happens, Assam will have to livewith insurgency for all times to come.O yes, don’t we know that somepeople in the political and securityestablishment want that insurgencyshould linger and do not come to anend!
