BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

The ancestors of this well known family are Joseph and Mary Philips who migrated from Pembrokeshire, Wales to America in 1755, with their three sons David, John, and Josiah. A fourth son, Joseph, was born alter their arrival in America; however, there ap¬ pears to be some evidence that he, too, was born in Wales.

They settled on land located in Uwchland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania* about one half mile north east of the village of Lionville. The farm is the first one on the north side of a secondary road branching off Route 100 at the lower Lionville Church.

The last member of the family owning and living on the farm was Frederick Bingaman, husband of Amanda Philips Bingaman of Joseph Philips III, of Josiah II, of Joseph and Mary Philips 1. In 1945, the iaim was owned by Mrs. Vivian Robertson (tax list of 1945) and presently, 1951, by Major and Mrs. David B. Sharp.

The house in which Joseph and Mary and their family lived was built of logs; and it is a part of the present re-modeled house as is evidenced by reconstruction changes effected by a recent owner, Mrs. Vivian Robertson, who, while removing a partition to make a larger living room, found logs which became exposed. She thoughtfully had a small door placed in front of the logs, which, when opened exposes the original logs.

The Welsh home of the family was located in the southern part of Wales in Pembroke¬ shire, the exact location being somewhat uncertain as representatives of the family in more recent years have discovered. Joseph was born in 1716 (old style) and Mary, his wife, in 1719.

While the Scots and Irish lost their original native languages, the Welsh retained theirs; and it is used in some of their church services and choral societies of which there are several in America. Their annual music festivals attract large gatherings of descendants of these hardy people as well as others who enjoy their beautiful singing. The Philips family have inherited the love of music as is evidenced by their participation in church choirs and music festivals.

The historical reference material of the family' does not reveal why Joseph and Mary and their young sons, David, John, and Josiah (then only four years of age) undertook the hazardous journey across the Atlantic Ocean to find a home in the undeveloped land of Pennsylvania. There are records however which indicate that Joseph had two brothers who had preceded him in emigrating to America. When David, Joseph and Mary’s eldest son, and Joseph, tlieir yroungest son, left the ancestral home in Chester County' to “go west” to the Pittsburgh area, they were accompanied by a cousin. Letters from the Tennessee branch, descendants of David II, refer to a Philip Philips. There are several letters which passed between members of the family in Uwchland and those in Tennessee establishing relationships between the two groups. Some of the members of the family' in 1 ennessee were established there before Joseph and Mary and their sons arrived in America. The following Genealogical Table gives data on this point.

Many' of the Welsh people in this country were members of the Rhydwilim Baptist Church, Carmarthenshire, Wales, or one of its branches. Manv Welshmen accompanied William Penn who arrived in 16S2, forming the Welsh Tract which included most of the townships of Radnor, Lower Merion, Haverford, Tredyffrin, and Uwchland. Note the Welsh names in these areas, Bryn Mawr, Cynwyd, Gwynedd, Wynnewood, and many others.

The Welsh Baptists in America were very influential in establishing churches in the land of their adoption. Thomas Griffiths and fifteen others sailed from Wales in 1701; and, after being affiliated with the Lower Dublin (Pennypack) Baptist Church founded in 1688. for one and one-half years, they went to New Castle, Delaware, bought o0,000 acres of iand and founded the old Welsh Tract Baptist Church. Owen Thomas, a member of the Rhyd¬ wilim Church in Wales, came in 1707, preached at the Welsh Tract Church and elsewhere in the early Baptist Churches, settled in the Vincent area and became affiliated with the Great Valley Baptist Church, constituted in 1711, and later helped in establishing the Vincent Baptist Church. The names Owen and Thomas are household names in the Philips family throughout its history. The writer’s father was Owen Thomas Philips; and his grandson is Thomas Owen Philips, now fourteen years old.

Reverend Owen Thomas’ granddaughter married Josiah Philips II whose descendants started the Philips Reunion in 1872 in memory of Owen Philips III, the writer’s grandfather, and the Reunion has been held eighty consecutive years, probably the longest con¬ secutive period of any. of the various family reunions. Joseph and Alary I and their sons attended the Great Valley Baptist Church (now remaining in excellent condition) and were among tbe fifty-one who separated from Great Valley in 1771 to constitute the present Vin¬ cent Baptist Church on October 12, 1771. Travel was difficult in those years, and churches were constituted somewhat in accordance with convenience of travelling.

As there were many Welshmen in the area, it appears to be evident that Joseph and Mary I knew of many friends and relatives who came to America before they undertook the hazardous journey; and there is good reason why they chose the Uwchland area.

In the Revolutionary War, the family, inspired by that love of liberty which is in¬ herent in the blood of W elshmen, took sides with the colonies. David, the eldest of the four sons, was commissioned Captain; Josiah, the third son, became a Lieutenant; and John, the second son, was taken captive in New Jersey and was ministered to bv his wife before being released. The sword carried by Lieutenant Josiah is now (1951) in tlie posses¬ sion of Charles F. Philips VI, of St. Petersburg, Florida. His bull’s eye watch is possessed by the writer. Articles from the ancestral home in Uwchland are now in possession of various members of the family and have a sentimental value as well as value as antiques. It is hoped that those who possess these valuable family mementos will give favorable con¬ sideration to placing them in the museum of the Chester County Historical Society, West Chester, Pennsylvania, where they will be carefully housed and will be available to the younger generations, who it is hoped, will continue interest in the family.

After the Revolutionary War was ended, David II and Joseph II left the ancestral home in Chester County and "went west” which in those days meant crossing the Alleghenies. John II and Josiah II remained in the county, and their descendants are largely responsible for instituting and maintaining the Philips Family Annual Reunion.

David II settled near Library, twelve miles south of Pittsburgh and Joseph II fewer miles south of that city. As pioneers in these regions, they spent very busy and useful lives. David became pastor of Peter’s Creek Baptist Church and served with distinction for forty years until his death in 1329. It is related of him that at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion of early Colonial times he urged that the law taxing whiskey, although unjust in the opinion of most of the people, be upheld and that orderly steps be taken to have the law repealed. He was threatened with death if he attempted to address the people advising that the law be upheld. He, however, fearlessly addressed his hearers; and he was un¬ harmed. Visitors are shown the place where Reverend David urged the upholding of the law. His two sons, Benjamin and John, disagreed with him and, with their families, went down the Ohio River by boat and up the Cumberland River and settled east of Nashville, Tennessee. There are now hundreds of descendants of the family in Tennessee most of whom are descendants of Beniamin 111 and John 111. Harry Phillips (uses two Is in spelling name), Lieutenant Commander in War II, has compiled a history of the descendants of Benjamin and John. Harry has attended the Philips Reunion at Vincent, and now he is an attorney in Nashville. At a reunion of the Tennessee branch held in 1956, representatives of this branch came from eleven different states. It is noted authentically that members of the family had gone to Tennessee before Benjamin and John went there from the Pittsburgh area.

Joseph II who accompanied his eldest brother David to the Pittsburgh area died in 1832, having had five children. He was a deacon in the Peter’s Creek Church and held the office of Justice of the Peace, an office of greater power anil responsibility than it is at present. There have been descendants ot Joseph attending the Philips Reunion at various times.

John II next to oldest son of Joseph and Alary I left the home circle in Uwchland Town¬ ship and settled on the old Lancaster Road near Downmgtown, Chester County, Pennsyl¬ vania. Aianv of his descendants lived in the Atglen, Chester County, area. He had seven children, three sons and lour daughters. Thomas J. Philips, former member of the Pennsyl¬ vania Legislature, and his brother, George Alorris Philips, formerly principal of West Chester State Normal School, now Teachers College, were among the most influential mem- l>ers of the family. George Alorris Philips was one of the foremost educators of Pennsyl¬ vania, having written the School Code of 1911 and published scientnic textbooks. The well known Philips Alemorial Building, one of the numerous Teachers College buildings, was con¬ structed in his memory. The John II branch of the family is always well represented in the Philips Annual Reunions.

Josiah II, the third son, remained on the ancestral farm in Uwchland Township and became owner of it. lie first married Martha Edwards, and three sons were born to them. He next married Sara Thomas, and they were the parents of two sons and four daughters. One of the two sons, Owen HI, left the old home and went to reside in East Nantmeal Township, Chester County, on the farm where Rachel Evans, his wife, was born in 1814 and lived there all of her lile. 1 he story of Rachel Evans Philips is an interesting one, and it is one of the historical documents of this branch of the family. .Nine sons and one daughter were born to Owen and Rachel III. Seven sons grew to manhood and became well known and influential in the community. The Philips Reunion was instituted by these seven sons of Owen and Rachel III in August 1872; and the Reunions have occurred every year, as stated above, consecutively. Much information about the family has been obtained through these Reunion meetings; and there is sufficient in the files of the Chester County Historical Society and the "Scrap Book” kept up to date as information becomes available by Lena Ogden Philips (Mrs. Walter L. Philips V), to compile a larger volume concerning the origin and development of the family. As most of those attending the Annual Reunion are descendants of Josiah II and John II more is known and recorded about them than about the descendants of the other two sons of Joseph and Mary I. It is noted that among the many members of the family who have attained high positions of influence there are high ranking officers in the Army and Navy, in state, county, and local affairs, administrators in schools, teachers, preachers, and leaders, together with many successful business men and farmers.

Brigadier General Leon Philips VII, son of Hannah Philips Rapp VI, granddaughter of Jesse E. Philips IV, in an address he made at the Reunion during World War II gave an interesting description of the country about Pembrokeshire, Wales; the old Rhydwilim Church; the people of the region some of whom have the name of Philips. Brigadier General Joseph Philips was stationed in Great Britain and France during much of the War II period. He is now retired and living at La Jolla, California. Numerous members of the family served with distinction in the regular United States Army, as Colonel Henry Philips, Dallas, Texas; Lieutenant Harry Philips, Attorney, Nashville, Tennessee; Lieutenant Eugene Forrester, graduate of West Point Military Academy, recently with the Army of Occu¬ pation in Austria.

Many members of the family which now numbers in the thousands have made the greatest contribution to the growth of the country since 1755 by observing the freedom of religious affiliations, participating in the civil activities which develop loyal citizens, teaching in the schools, serving as engineers, physicians, lawyers, merchants, and farmers.

The principle enunciated by David II at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion, referred to above, namely, uphold the law, and it unsatisfactory, take legal steps to have the law repealed, applies equally to the conduct of the family regarding observance of laws, customs, and procedures which may be interpreted to mean good substantial citizens.

The “Philips Family in Religious Work” is the title of an extensive article by the writer of this brief history of the family. A copy is tiled with other family records in the Chester County Historical Society, October 25, 1945. Excerpts from the article follow: Those of us who bear the name Philips, descendants of Josiah II, second son of Joseph and Mary I, often fail to realize that we can trace our ancestry through Sara Thomas, Josiah's second wife, to Owen Thomas who came to America from Wales in 1707, forty-eight years before Joseph and Mary I. Sara Thomas was the granddaughter of Owen Thomas. We therefore have a maternal ancestor, Owen Thomas, a "teaching elder" of the Welsh Tract Church, New Castle County, Delaware, constituted in 1708. Owen Thomas left the Welsh Tract Church in 1747 and became affiliated with Great Valley Baptist Church. He with Joseph and Mary I and their sons, together with others who had been affiliated with Great Valley Baptist Church, left that church and constituted Vincent Baptist Church. The Vincent brethern, not yet members of the constituted Vincent Baptist Church, appointed two sons of Owen Thomas, Owen, Jr., and David, and Joseph Philips 1 and his son, David II, messen¬ gers to request their dismissal from Great Valley Baptist Church; and, on October 12, 1771,

Vincent Baptist Church was constituted.

While the reason for request for dismissal from Great Valley is not given, yet the dis¬ tance was probably the deciding factor.

Eight of the charter members of Vincent were members of the Philips family. They exerted a large influence in the growth of V incent, and the remains of many oi them lie side by side in the cemetery of the church. (A diagram of the graves with names inscribed on the markers is among the family records in the Historical Society.) It may be added

that the graves of our ancestors, Joseph and Mary I, have recently been marked by a boulder, conveyed from their farm near Lionville, with a bronze plate attached to the boulder, the latter being set in concrete between the two graves. While the original marble markers are still in place, yet weathering with erosion has made the inscriptions on them almost dlegibie.

The records of Vincent Baptist Church from October 12, 1771 to April 6, 1791 are miss¬ ing, hence an account ol the activities of the church for nearly twenty years cannot be given; but it can be assumed that the family exerted a strong influence in the growth of the church. However we know that Josiah II and his wife Sara remained near Vincent, that he was a trustee of the church, and that they were active in its development. Enos Philips IV (of Josiah III, of Josiah II) was chosen superintendent ot the Sunday School according to re¬ cords of 1829. He preached at several of the churches in the vicinity of Vincent and was an untiring worker.

In February 1833 forty-eight members of Vincent were dismissed at their own request to form W indsor Baptist Church, Uwchland Township near Eagle, Chester County, Penn¬ sylvania. W indsor was organized in the home of Josiah Philips III on April 12, 1835.Josiah III became its first preacher. Enos, his son, assisted him and later Enos became its pastor.

Another exodus from Vincent occurred in October 1841 when fourteen members were dismissed to constitute the East Xantmeal Baptist Church, in East Nantmeal Township, northern Chester County.

Owen Philips III brother of Josiah III (above) was one of the most influential members dismissed from Vincent, lie had married Rachel Evans who resided on her father’s farm described above, to which Owen had gone after his marriage to Rachel. The records of East Nantmeal Church reveal active participation by Owen and Rachel and their seven sons and their wives. This participation of the family in the church has continued to the present time (1951). Present representatives of the family who are active in East Xantmeal arc Daniel K. Philips VI, Lesley Philips VI and his sisters Irma Knauer and Miriam Bond and their children. Josiah IV, one of Owen and Rachel’s seven sons was licensed to preach by the East Xantmeal Church and later he became pastor at Radnor; Euclid, Ohio; Milestown (Oaklane); North W’ales; and Jenkintown where he died in 1889.

Members of the family were active in the Brandywine Baptist Church, Chadds Ford, Delaware County, which was constituted in 1715, six years before Vincent. Owen Ihomas (above) preached at Brandywine during the years 1725-1759. His name appears in the records of W elsh Tract Church, Great Valley, Vincent, and Brandywine. Reverend Enos Phdips (above) preached at Brandywine, and it is recorded that “he was much loved by the people who regret the dispensation of Providence which renders the separation necessary.”

Goshen Baptist Church, near W’est Chester, was likewise served bv members o f the family, Josiah III being pastor in 1844. The Glen Run Church (Atglen) was another center of great interest on the part of members of the family. Enos M. Philips 1\ (above) was a central figure in the establishment ot the church, and he became pastor of it in 1832, resign¬ ing in 1840 and again becoming pastor after an interim of one year, serving until 1849 when he became a home missionary to W isconsin. The Glen Run Church at Atglen is the licit 1 in which many of the descendants of John Philips II have served, some ol them being sliil active in the church. Among the early members were George III and Joseph III, of John II, of Joseph and Mary I. John Morris Philips IV (of George III above) and his sons, I homas J. V, and George Morris Philips V, mentioned above as principal of W’est Chester Normal School. The other son of George 111, George Washington Philips IV, his son Dallas V, and other members ot this branch have long been affiliated with the Glen Run Church.

Beulah Church near Russellville, Upper Oxford Township, Chester County, constituted on June 5, 1825 was served by Reverend Enos Philips while he was pastor of the Glen Run Church. Hepzibah Baptist Church, Xewlin Township, Chester Countv ,was served bv Re verend Owen Thomas as referred to above from 1720 to 1/57, during the time he also preached at Brandywine.

The Kennett Square Baptist Church is another one among those whose influential members were members of the family. It was October 11, 1882 when a meeting was held at the residence of D. Duer Philips V (of Jesse IV) for the purpose of constituting the Kennett Square Church. Among the seventeen charter members, there were seven mem¬ bers of the Philips family. Later the Downingtown Baptist Church was formed. Owen Thomas Philips IV (of Owen III) and members of his family were and several are in¬ fluential members of this church.

Most of the wives of the men who were influential in religious work were likewise active

in the churches. In most cases they were much occupied in rearing large families as well as

assisting their husbands in their various occupations. It is noted that Mary, wife of Joseph

I, was active in Great Valley and later in \ incent Baptist Churches. Rachel, wife of Owen

III, participated actively in the allairs of East Nantmeal Baptist Church even though she

was the mother of ten children, seven of whom grew to manhood. Hannah Philips Eachus

III, daughter of Josiah II, is known to have been an active church worker. Her son, Owen

Philips Eachus IV, served as pastor of the i lightstown Baptist Church for forty-three years.

Pie was a frequent contributor to the Reunion programs. These are but three of the hundreds

of those wives who reared their numerous children according to the principles of the New

Testament and were found in the churches with their families.

FIRST GENERAL REUNION

Prior to 1877, Reunions had been held, principally, by the seven sons of Owen and

Rachel Philips III, at the homes of these sons; the first was in 1872.

The Reunion of 1877 was the first general reunion attended by many descendants of

Joseph and Mary I other than those of John II and Josiah II. The record of the reunion

was the first printed publication of family records, and it became the basis of the 1926 publi¬

cation.

Copies of the 1877 Reunion and the genealogical record of 1926 are of considerable value

to members of the family. Copies of these published records are filed with Philips date in

the headquarters of Chester County Historical Society, West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The suggestion for the comprehensive reunion of 1877 originated with Joseph Philips

IV (of Owen III), Amanda Philips Bingaman IV (of Joseph III), and Elizabeth Philips Guest

IV (of Josiah III), wife of Melchi Guest.

Reverend Owen Philips Eaches graduated from Bucknell University in 1863. He held

chairs of Greek and Hebrew there; trustee Peddie Institute; first wife graduated Bucknesljl

he graduated Crozer Theological Seminary 1866. First pastorate was Nicetown Baptist

Church, eight years; First Baptist Ch urch, Hightstwon, New Jersey, forty-three years;

Civil War Veteran; outstanding member ol Philips Reunion. One of his addresses at Re¬

union published in leaflet form and distributed; copy in Philips Family records, Chester

County Pennsylvania Historical Headquarters, West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Lena Ogden Philips (Mrs. Walter L. Philips V) became interested in Philips Family

History prior to 1926 vhen she and Walter L. Philips published the 1926 family history.

She has collected much family data, births, deaths, marriages, etc., and has manifested es¬

pecial ability in locating members of the family, old and new, in their proper places in the

family lines. For several years she was recognized by the family (officially the Reunion)

as the family historian She has assorted and organized clippings, photographs, scrap books

made by others, keeps a scrap book in her possession, and has made many duplicate notes,

papers, and other material for tiling in the County I listorical Archives. Through her know¬

ledge of the family, connections have been made with branches which have settled in many

parts distant from the original homestead in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Genealogical table of the Joseph and Mary Philips family who emigrated from Wales to America in 1755. A dwscription of these two pioneers and their four sons may be found in another part of this publication.

The following table is not a complete listing of all the descendants of Joseph and Mary due to a lack ot information about some of the lines especially those of their first son, David, and their fourth son, Joseph, who left the ancestral home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and went to the western part of Pennsylvania near the end of the eighteenth century. As the second son, John, and the third son, Josiah, remained in the vicinity of the old home more of their descendants attend the family reunions held annually hence more information about them becomes available.

Key: The Roman numbers placed before or after a name indicate the generation, considering Joseph and Mary, the first generation: their sons the second, etc.

Descendants of Josiah Philips II of Joseph and Mary I Note: Many of the descendants of Josiah II have remained in Chester County, Pennsyl¬

vania and attend the Philips Reunions at Vincent Baptist Church, Chester County, in greater numbers than those or other sons of Joseph and Mary I, although many from other states have attended these reunions as they have become interested in their ancestry. The reunions were started by sons of Owen III, of Josiah II, and now (1951) there have been seventy-nine (80) consecutive reunions.

Susanna preserved the letters of her father, David III, of Josiah II, who went to Tennessee (above) and joined Benjamin III and his brother, John III, of David II, who went from western Pennsylvania. The letters were passed down to her grandson, Richard M. Atkinson VI. They establish a definite relationship between Joseph I and Philip Philips who had gone to Tennessee and who was probably a brother of Joseph I. Copies of these letters are now (1951) in possession ot Mrs. Walt er L. Philips referred to elsewhere, and eventually will be placed among the Philips records in the files of the Chester County Historical Society, West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Note—The printed programs are donated in memory of Mary I. Stille, 5th

Generation, Walter L. Philips, 5th Generation, and his wife Lena Ogden Philips;

for many years unofficial historians, genealogists, and archivists of this family,

and devoted to the preservation of family solidarity through annual family

reunions. Mary I. Stille was Secretary of the first general reunion in 1877. At

the 1953 Reunion, Walter L. Philips was appointed to be General Chairman of

the 1955 special celebration but, after making preliminary preparations, his

death occurred, and others took up the management of this Reunion.
