Care and safety information● Power consumption

– When the system is switched toStandby mode, it is still consuming power.To disconnect the system from the powersupply completely, remove the AC powerplug from the wall jack.

● Avoid high temperatures, moisture,water and dust– Do not expose the player, batteries ordiscs to humidity, rain, sand or excessiveheat (caused by heating equipment ordirect sunlight.)

● Avoid condensation problem– The lens may cloud over when theplayer is suddenly moved from cold towarm surroundings, making it impossibleto play a disc. Leave the player in thewarm environment until the moistureevaporates.

● Do not block the vents– Do not operate the DVD Player in anenclosed cabinet, allow about 10 cm (4inch) of free space all around the playerfor adequate ventilation.

● Care of the cabinet– Use a soft cloth slightly moistened witha mild detergent solution. Do not use asolution containing alcohol, spirits,ammonia or abrasives.

● Finding a suitable location– Place the player on a flat, hard, andstable surface.

● Disc handling– To clean a CD, wipe it in astraight line from the centertowards the edge using a soft,lint-free cloth. A cleaningagent may damage the disc!– Write only on the printedside of a CDR(W) and only with a soft felt-tipped pen.– Handle the disc by its edge, do nottouch the surface.

Using an accessory RF modulator

1 Use the composite video cable (yellow) toconnect the DVD Player’s CVBS jack tothe video input jack on the RF modulator.

2 Use the RF coaxial cable (not supplied) toconnect the RF modulator to your TV’sRF jack.

Getting Started

Step 1: Inserting batteries intothe Remote Control

1 Open the battery compartment.

2 Insert two batteries type R06 or AA,following the indications (+-) insidethe compartment.

3 Close the cover.

Using the Remote Control tooperate the Player

1 Aim the Remote Controldirectly at the remotesensor (IR) on the frontpanel.

2 Do not put any objectsbetween the RemoteControl and the DVDPlayer while operatingthe DVD Player.

CAUTION!– Remove batteries if they areexhausted or if the Remote Controlis not being used for a long time.– Do not use old and new ordifferent types of batteries incombination.– Batteries contain chemicalsubstances, so they should bedisposed properly.

Step 2: Setting up the TV

IMPORTANT!Make sure you have completed allthe necessary connections. (Seepages 9-10 “Connecting TV”).

1 Turn on the TV and set to the correctvideo-in channel. You should see thePhilips DVD background screen on theTV.

2 Usually these channels are between thelowest and highest channels and may becalled FRONT, A/V IN, or VIDEO. See yourTV manual for more details.➜ Or, you may go to channel 1 on yourTV, then press the Channel down buttonrepeatedly until you see the Video Inchannel.➜ Or, the TV Remote Control may have abutton or switch that chooses differentvideo modes.➜ Or, set the TV to channel 3 or 4 if youare using an RF modulator.

3 If you are using external equipment, (eg.audio system or receiver), turn it on andselect the appropriate input source forthe DVD Player output. Refer to theequipment owner’s manual for detail.

Setting up Progressive Scan feature(for Progressive Scan TV only)

The progressive scan display twice thenumber of frames per seconds thaninterlaced scanning (ordinary normal TVsystem). With nearly double the numberof lines, progressive scan offers higherpicture resolution and quality.

IMPORTANT!Before enabling the progressive scanfeature, you must ensure:1) Your TV can accept progressive signals,

a progressive scan TV is required.2) You have connected the DVD player to

your TV using Y Pb Pr (see page 9.)

1 Turn on your TV.

2 Turn off your TV progressive scan modeor turn on interlaced mode (refer to yourTV user manual.)

3 Press POWER on the remote control toturn on the DVD player.

4 Select the correct Video Input channel.(See page 14).➜ The DVD background screen appearson the TV.

5 Press SYSTEM MENU.

6 Press 2 repeatedly to select {VIDEOSETUP PAGE}.

There will be a distorted picture onyour TV at this state until you turnon the progressive scan mode onyour TV.

9 Turn on your TV progressive scan mode(refer to your TV user manual.)➜ The below menu appears on the TV.

Selecting the colour system thatcorresponds to your TV

This DVD Player is compatible with bothNTSC and PAL. In order for a DVD discto play on this Player, the colour system ofthe Disc, the TV and the DVD Playershould match.

PAL – Select this if the connected TV isPAL system. It will change the video signalof a NTSC disc and output in PAL format.

NTSC – Select this if the connected TVis NTSC system. It will change the videosignal of a PAL disc (VCD only) andoutput in NTSC format.

Multi – Select this if the connected TV iscompatible with both NTSC and PAL(multi-system). The output format will bein accordance with the video signal of thedisc.

5 Select an item and press OK.

Helpful Hints:– Before changing the current TVStandard setting, ensure that your TVsupports the ‘selected TV Type’ system.– If there is no proper picture onyour TV, wait for 15 seconds for autorecovery.

To deactivate Progressive manually

● When the distorted picture stillappears on the TV, it may be due tothe connected TV does not acceptprogressive signals, and progressive is setby mistake. You must reset the unit tointerlace format.

1 Turn off your TV progressive scan modeor turn on to interlaced mode (refer toyour TV user manual.)

2 Press and hold EJECT on the DVDplayer.

3 When the disc is ejected, press and holdEJECT again, and numeric keypad ‘1’on the remote control at the same timefor few seconds.➜ The DVD blue background screenwill appear on the TV.

Playing a DivX disc

2 If the DivX movie contains externalsubtitles, the subtitle menu will appear onthe TV screen for your selection.

● In this case, pressing SUBTITLE on theremote control will turn on or off thesubtitle.

● If multilingual subtitles are embedded onthe DivX disc, pressing SUBTITLE willchange the subtitle language duringplayback.

Not all discs are rated or coded by thedisc maker. You can prevent a specific discfrom playing by locking the disc. Up to 40discs can be locked.

1 In ‘GENERAL SETUP PAGE’, press 3 4 tohighlight {DISC LOCK}, then press 2.

LOCKSelect this to block the playback of thecurrent disc. Subsequent access to alocked disc requires six-digit password.The default password is ‘136 900’ (seepage 35 “Changing the password”).

UNLOCKSelect this to unlock the disc and allowfuture playback.

2 Press 3 4 to select a setting, then pressOK to confirm your selection.

Dimming player’s display panel

You can select different levels ofbrightness for the display screen.

Helpful Hints:– If DIGITAL OUTPUT is set to ‘All’, allaudio settings except MUTE are invalid.

LPCM Output

If you connect the DVD Player to a PCMcompatible receiver via the digitalterminals, such as coaxial or optical etc,you may need to adjust ‘LPCM Output’.Discs are recorded at a certain samplingrate. The higher the sampling rate, thebetter the sound quality.

➜ 48kHz: Playback a disc recorded at thesampling rate of 48kHz.➜ 96kHz: Playback a disc recorded at thesampling rate of 96kHz that can only beachieved in Stereo-Classic (Flat) mode.

Progressive - turning on/off

In the progressive scan mode, you canenjoy the high quality picture with lessflickers. It only works when you haveconnected the DVD player’s Y Pb Pr jacksto your TV that supports the progressivevideo input. Otherwise, the a distortedpicture will appear on the TV. For properprogressive scan set up, see page 15.

Restricting playback by ParentalControl

Some DVDs may have a parental levelassigned to the complete disc or tocertain scenes on the disc. This featurelets you set a playback limitation level.The rating levels are from 1 to 8 and arecountry dependent. You can prohibit theplaying of certain discs that are notsuitable for your children or have certaindiscs played with alternative scenes.

PBC

You can set the PBC to ON or OFF. Thisfeature is available only on Video CD 2.0with playback control (PBC) feature. Fordetails, see page 21.

3 Use the numeric keypad (0-9) to enterthe six-digit password (see page 35“Changing the password”).➜ DVDs that are rated above the levelyou selected will not play unless youenter your six-digit password.

Helpful Hints:– VCD, SVCD, CD have no level indication,so parental control function has no effect onthese type of discs. This applies to mostillegal DVD discs.– Some DVDs are not encoded with arating though the movie rating may beprinted on the Disc cover. The rating levelfeature does not work for such Discs.

MP3/JPEG Menu - turning on/off

MP3/JPEG Navigator can be set only if thedisc is recorded with menu. It allows youto select different display menus for easynavigation.

Restoring to original settings

Setting the DEFAULT function will resetall options and your personal settings tothe factory defaults, except yourpassword for Parental Control and DiscLock.

2 Press OK to confirm.➜ All settings will now reset to factorydefaults.

WARNINGUnder no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this willinvalidate the warranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electric shock.

If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for repair. Ifyou are unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer orPhilips for help.

Problem Solution

No power – Check if the AC power cord is properly connected.– Press the STANDBY ON on the front of the DVD

system to turn on the power.

No picture – Refer to your TV’s manual for correct Video Inchannel selection. Change the TV channel until yousee the DVD screen.

– Check if the TV is switched on.– If the progressive scan feature is activated but the

connected TV does not support progressive signalsor the cables are not connected accordingly, seepage 15 for proper progressive scan set up ordeactivate the progressive scan feature as below:

1) Turn off your TV progressive scan mode or turn onto interlaced mode.

2) Press and hold EJECT on the DVD Player.3) When the disc is ejected, press and hold EJECT again,

and numeric keypad ‘1’ on the remote control at thesame time for few seconds.

Distorted picture – Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion mayappear depending on the disc being played back. Thisis not a malfunction.

Completely distorted picture or – Connect DVD Player directly to the TV.black/white picture with DVD – Make sure the disc is compatible with the DVD/

Player.– Ensure that the DVD Player’s TV Type is set to match

that of the Disc and your TV.

No sound or distorted sound – Adjust the volume.– Check that the speakers are connected correctly.

No audio at digital output – Check the digital connections.– Check if your receiver can decode MPEG-2 or DTS

and if not, please make sure the digital output is setto PCM.

– Check if the audio format of the selected audiolanguage matches your receiver capabilities.

Disc can’t be played – The DVD+R/CD-R must be finalised.– Ensure the disc label is facing up.– Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.– If you have recorded a Picture CD or MP3/WMA

CD yourself, ensure that your disc contains at least10 pictures or 5 MP3/WMA tracks.

– Region code incorrect.

Picture freezes momentarily – Check the disc for fingerprints/scratches andduring playback clean with a soft cloth wiping from centre to edge.

No return to start-up screen when – Reset the unit by switching the player off, then ondisc is removed again.

The player does not respond to – Aim the Remote Control directly at the sensorthe Remote Control on the front of the player.

– Reduce the distance to the player.– Replace the batteries in the Remote Control.– Re-insert the batteries with their polarities (+/–

signs) as indicated.

Buttons do not work – To completely reset the player, unplug the ACcord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds.

Player does not respond to some – Operations may not be permitted by the disc.operating commands during playback. Refer to the instructions of the disc jacket.

DVD Player cannot read – Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD toCDs/DVDs clean the lens before sending the DVD Player for

repair.

Menu items cannot be selected – Press STOP twice before selecting System Menu.– Depending on the disc availability, some menu items

cannot be selected.

Unable to play DivX movies – Check that the DivX file is encoded in ‘HomeTheater’ mode with DivX 5.x encoder.

Unable to select Progressive Scan on/off – Check that the output of the video signal is switch to‘YUV’.

No sound during DivX movies playback – The audio codec may not be supported by the DVDplayer.

An MPEG-4 or DivX movies does – Check that file size of the movies does not exceednot repeat the file size of the CD disc during burning.

This systemcan convert the interlaced video from DVD intoprogressive format for connection to a progressivedisplay. It dramatically increases the verticalresolution.Region code: A system for allowing discs to beplayed back only in the region designated beforehand.This unit will only play discs that have compatibleregion codes. You can find the region code of yourunit by looking on the product label. Some discs arecompatible with more than one region (or ALLregions).Surround: A system for creating realistic three-dimensional sound fields full of realism by arrangingmultiple speakers around the listener.Title: The longest section of a picture or musicfeature on DVD, music, etc., in video software, or theentire album in audio software.
