In many parts of the world people stillbelieve in witchcraft, family spirits, andevil spirits. They think there is such apower as ancestral spirits that controltheir lives and punish them if they dowrong or fail to observe their tribal customs. Such people believe that diseasesand troubles are caused by supposedspirits or by witches that have cast spellson them.

People accept such beliefs largely because their fathers and grandfathers believe them. An insect caught in a spider'sweb will struggle desperately to free itself,as will a wild beast that has fallen into atrap. But the belief in witchcraft and spirits has for centuries been a way of life forso many that they do not even attempt toresist. Yet there is a way out.

Jesus proved his words by his deeds.He healed people of all kinds of diseases,even those who thought they were possessed by evil spirits. He also healed people of sin and raised the dead. He usedspiritual laws to heal people of diseaseand sin.

And this is possiblethrough Christian Science, which was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in America in1866.4 She was healed of the effects of aserious accident as she read in the Bibleabout Jesus' healing of a paralyzedman.5 Having always loved the Bible, shewas led to study it more deeply for three

years. She prayed to learn how Jesus hadhealed through an understanding ofGod's laws. She discovered these lawsand wrote a textbook called Science andHealth with Key to the Scriptures. Thisbook contains the complete Science ofGod and man, which Mrs. Eddy proved byhealing many who were sick, as havemany thousands of her followers.

He is all-power and is present everywhere. He is not like a big man in the skyor a cave but is All-Spirit, Mind, or intelligence, and He loves and cares for all Hischildren—all of us. When we truly understand God, we can no longer fear evil inanyform. If we pray with this understanding, we can heal ourselves and others.

God never created evil in any form,whether as witchcraft, sickness, death, orany other trouble. He sent His Son ChristJesus to heal sickness, sin, and death,cast out devils, and destroy evil, becausethese are not according to God's will, orlaw. There are many records in the Biblewhere so-called devils, or evil spirits, werecast out and diseases healed. In one instance Jesus healed a madman who livedby himself among the tombs and couldnot be tamed. Evil seems real to those who believe in itor fear it, or who sin or do not know ofGod. The remedy for evil is to stop believing in it, stop sinning, and start followingGod and worshiping Him only. Throughloving God and one another and keepingour hearts pure and fearless, we are protected by God's law. Those who practicewitchcraft find it next to impossible to affect people who are good and pure andwhose hearts are loving.

The Bible warns people against believing in wi tchcraf t , ev i l sp i r i ts , anddivining. In I John we are told to judgerightly the spirits, or thoughts, that cometo us. It says: "Beloved, believe not everyspirit, but try the spirits whether they areof God: because many false prophets aregone out into the world." 8 We can chooseto accept only good thoughts, which comefrom God. Christian Science shows us that weneed to check all the thoughts, or "spirits," that come into our thinking to seewhether they are good and come fromGod, or are bad and therefore come fromignorance of God. Because the real manreflects God, or Mind, he has no evilthoughts, or spirits, to send out or to receive. Such thoughts come from the ignorant, false mind, which has no power orintelligence.

Because witchcraft and spirits have noreal power or intelligence, there is no needto fear them. Another name for this evilbelief is hypnotism, and it can't touch uswhen we know that God, good, is the onlyMind or power. This Mind is our realMind, and we should deny that there isany evil mind, or spirit, anywhere to harmpeople.

God, Spirit, fills all space. Man who isGod's child cannot therefore have anything to do with evil spirits. The real youand I live forever as God's image and likeness. This is true now and always and for

The belief that something called spiritspunishes people to keep them in rightways of living cannot be true because Godlovingly governs us all. We have only tolove and obey Him in order to be blessed,protected, and healed. Praying to God asour loving Father, and following good andpure ways of living as Jesus taught, willbring health, happiness, and freedom.

When we learn to see ourselves andothers as forever the beloved children ofGod, we can no longer fear witchcraft orevil spirits.

Christian Science is a way of living according to the way Jesus taught. Prayingto the one true God and studying the Bibleand Science and Health helps us to learnand practice this Science better. Our livesbecome happier, healthier, and more successful. There is no need to consult a9
