What is Plagiarism?Plagiarism is using someone
else's words and ideas in a paper and acting as though they were
your own
Or simply said:plagiarism is intellectual theft
![Page 23: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Some famous examples
• Martin Luther King
• Renee Diekstra
• Britney Spears
• George Harrison
![Page 24: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
This is obvious
• copying someone else's paper.
• taking short or long quotations from a source without identifying the source.
• turning in a paper you bought over the Internet.
![Page 25: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Less obvious
• changing a few words and pretending they are your own. • rearranging the order of ideas in a list and making the
reader think you produced the list. • borrowing ideas from a source and not giving proper credit
to the source. • turning in a paper from another class. Whether this is
plagiarism or not depends on your instructor—ask first! • using information from an interview or an online chat or
email, etc., without properly citing the source of the information.
• using words that were quoted in one source and acting and citing the original source as though you read it yourself.
![Page 26: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
How to avoid it?
• give credit to a source whenever you use information that is not your own unless it is common knowledge
• Cite correctly
![Page 27: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Common knowledge
• Common knowledge (something that is widely known and accepted) does not have to be cited
• For example, historical dates, mathematical formulae, and (some) scientific principles and theories
![Page 28: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Detection Software
• Wageningen UR bought a detection programme for plagiarism, Ephorus.
![Page 29: PhD Course Information Literacy, part 1 9.15 - 10.15: Digital Library, Catalogue, WaY 10.15 - 10.30: Break 10.30 - 12.15: Bibliographic databases 12.15](https://reader036.vdocuments.site/reader036/viewer/2022070407/56649e445503460f94b38adb/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
