• The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) commissioned Wind

and Solar photovoltaic (PV) Strategic Environmental Assessment

(SEA), in support of the Strategic Integrated Project (SIP) 8.

• Aim of the SEA:

Identify areas for the development of large scale Wind and Solar

(PV) energy facilities.

• Phase 1 Wind and Solar PV SEA:

Was completed in 2015

Identified 8 Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs).

Phase 2 SEA

• Aim of the SEA:-

Identify additional Renewable Energy Development Zones

(REDZ) at a finer scale across the entire country,

Use of most recent readily available scientific information.

• Separate assessment for:

Wind & Solar (PV)

Next steps

Assessment of the draft focus areas by multi-

author specialists

A survey amongst the renewable

energy industry and amongst conservation

organisations to obtain additional

inputs on the draft focus

areas

Refinement and update of the

draft focus areas

The public review and

comments on the draft focus

areas

Refinement of the final draft focus areas

The final hand-over of the

project outputs to DEA.

Publishing of the and final focus areas

(new REDZs) in a gazette and request the

public to review and comment as part of a

formal gazetting process
