Feed• Most of the animals on the Pharo farm
eat grass in the summer time and hay in the winter. Every animal has to eat food that supplies the nutrients that they need.

Dogs
• The dogs on the farm are very important. They help Farmer Pharo move the animals from one pasture to another. This allows the animals to have more grass when they need it.

Lambing• Lambing is a very busy time of year on the farm.
Lambing is when the mother sheep (ewes) have babies (lambs). The farmer has to watch over the sheep very carefully at this time to make sure that all the lambs stay safe and healthy. During this time, the ewes are kept close to the barn or inside the barn.

Sheep
• Sheep are the most common animal at the Pharo farm. There is a flock of 70 ewes and 5 rams (adult male sheep). During lambing time, around 160 lambs are born. Index Quit

Food• Food is the primary use for sheep. There are lots of
different things that we eat that come from sheep. Lamb chops is very common. The horns, hooves, and bones are ingredients in marshmallows, ice cream, jello, and yogurt. There are also many other non food items that are made from sheep.

Wool• Sheep have wool that covers their bodies to keep
them warm in the winter. During the summer time, many farmers have the sheep sheared to help keep them cool and to harvest the wool. Wool is used to make many types of clothing and blankets.

Cattle• The Pharo cattle herd consists of steers (castrated males) and
heifers (females that have not had babies). The herd contains around 10 head of cattle. These cattle are bought when they are not yet 1 year old and butchered when they are around 2 years old. These cattle provide the primary meat for the Pharo family.

Food• Cattle provide beef which is one the
most common food items in the USA. They also provide a lot of the milk that is consumed.

Leather• Leather comes from the hide (skin) of
cattle. We use leather for lots of different things. Some items made out of leather from cattle are clothes, saddles, belts, shoes, couches, and car seats.

Chickens• Another common animal that you will see
around the Pharo farm are chickens. There are roosters (males) and hens (females). In the spring and summer, often times there are chicks (babies). On the farm there is only one rooster. He is the only one that crows.

Uses for Chickens• Hens lay eggs, which are collected for people
to eat. The chickens that live on farms most often lay brown eggs. The other chickens most often lay white eggs. There are a few hens that lay green or pink eggs. Chickens are also used for meat.

Cats• On the Pharo farm there are four cats.
Two live in the barn and two live in the house. There are also a few feral (wild) cats that eat from the cat food in the barn.

Uses for Cats• One of the uses for cats is to keep the rodent
population down. The rodents get into lots of things such as the bags of grain and other feed for the animals. This is very destructive, so the cats have the job of killing the rodents. The cats are also pets.

Horses• The Pharo farm has five horses. Three
geldings (castrated males) and two mares (females). Every once in a while a foal (baby) is born.
Index Quit
Uses for Horses• The horses on the Pharo farm are used
to help move animals around. Most often, though, they are used for riding or pulling carts. In some countries, horses are also used for meat.
