Tell us a little about yourself!

J: I went to pharmacy school at UCSF and also completed my residency there. I like any-thing outdoors, so things like hiking, skiing, or walking on the beach. My next thing is to learn paddleboarding, but I’m worried about sharks haha!

How did you come about developing the Pharmaceutical Sciences Undergraduate Program?

J: I was recruited in 2005 by UCI to develop the major. I saw it as an opportunity to create a high-quality undergraduate degree and prepare students for their graduate schools. It felt like a blank canvas that I could paint with any colors. Thus, I developed the major based on changes we have in biomedical and pharmaceutical research and health care so that students who go through this major are ready to be very successful in graduate school and in life!

What was your reasoning behind select-ing the curriculum?

J: The courses are selected with two specific reasons in mind. One - to prepare students for the rigors of top pharmacy/medical schools, or if they choose to do a Ph.D. program. And two - to give students the opportunity to know enough to take entry-level positions in industry.

Who is your role model?

J: I actually have many role models but when it comes to having high standards, my role model would still be my mother. She’s a very caring person and constantly tries to help everyone.

What’s one thing you love about UCI?

J: Just one thing, haha? As far as my position goes, I loved the autonomy and freedom that was given to me to develop the curriculum. It was very much a team effort, and I loved that UCI gave their trust and faith in me. And I also love the fact that UCI is near the hills that I hike on and the ocean.

Are you involved in any research?

J: I do anti-aging research with fruit flies in hopes of slowing the aging process. We work with botanical extracts and natural products and we’ve had great results in extending their lifespan. Once we’ve found a successful plant, we try to figure out the mechanisms of action and their impact on many aging pathways. Some of these aging pathways are conserved in various species like humans and fruit flies so the idea is if you can modulate pathways in one species, you can modulate the same pathway in another.

Have you had any extracts that have been very successful?

J: Yes, our champion in the lab is Rhodio-la rosea. It’s a very interesting plant usually grown in cold, dry regions such as Siberia or some parts of Europe.

What do you think are some qualities of an ideal pharmacy student?

J: One would be an enthusiasm to learn and to help. Another would be a desire to make and create changes; in other words, to be a leader and not a follower. A pharmacy student should have a sense of caring for people and their community. Be well-rounded, and I don’t mean having a 3.8 GPA and being in X amount of extra-curriculars. Be someone who can have fun as well as be a good student.

Do you have any future goals in mind for youself?

J: Professionally, I would love to write a book. I have quite a few ideas in mind. My research goal is again, to slow the aging process to help people live healthier, lon-ger. Educationally, I really hope to instill a love for learning in students.

Pre-Pharmacy Society (PPS) was developed to provide future Pharmacists a place to build connnections and thrive.Even if you are unsure whether a career as a pharmacist is the right for you, PPS is a great place to start. All majors and class levels are welcome, and even those who don’t attend UCI can still become apart of PPS. PPS can be that connection that helps mentor, advise, or even grow your interests in the the field of Pharmacy.Through PPS students will be exposed to the information and experience necessary to become a competitive applicant for graduate school, and also gain insight about Pharmacy as a career through various outlets such as field trips, community service, volunteer work and guest speakers!

The Pharmaceutical Sciences program offers a fantastic resource for incoming first year students: the Mentorship Program! The program pairs up freshmen students with a third or fourth year Pharm Sci upperclassman. Together, a connectionand network is forged as mentors assist menteesthrough whatever struggles they may have during their first year.

Mentorship Program

Mentors are required to have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and to check in with their mentees once a week. In addition, quarterly socials are held to provide a chance to meet fellow Pharm Sci students and as a positive outlet to have fun! This is a great opportunity to begin one’s college career on the right foot.

popular study areas+study tipsAYALA SCIENCE LIBRARYIf you haven’t been to the science library before, then you’re in for a treat. The science library has four fl oors worth of dedicated study space, not to mention, the many study rooms embedded on each fl oor. Whether you self-study or have group sessions, this library fi ts all your study needs. However, you might want to get there early if you want a study room.

The eariler you start studying the better! Your brain will have more time to solidfy the knowledge.

I’m sure you’ve heard practice makes perfect! So do those textbook problems.

Go to offi ce hours if you have questions! It doesn’t have to be your professor’s offi ce hours, it could be a TA, a peer tutor, or even a LARC tutor!

SLEEP before exams!

STUDENT CENTERFit with a computer lab that has both iMacs and PCs,plus the Courtyard Study Lounge, the Student Center is a niche all its own. Plus during fi nals week the center is open 24hrs and opens many rooms up as study spots. There is even seating outside near the computer lab if you like to be outdoors. If you don’t mind a little noise now and then, give this place a shot.

LANGSON LIBRARYIf Ayala isn’t the place for you, try Langston Library. It my not be retrofi tted with multiple study rooms, but the cozy at-home atmosphere and the so-silent you can hear yourself walk feel makes this place a great study destination. The 1st fl oor has lots of computers and a beautiful view of Aldrich Park! Plus the 3rd and 4th fl oors are warm and defi nitely give off a traditional library vibe.
