SYNERGIES

On the basis of our research and development activities we can establish a fruitful cooperation between science and economy.

The research will examine the different flight operational situations and the interaction of the human and technical factors, including the human performance and limitation. The results will allow the compilation of services for customers on the market (aircraft and simulator manufacturers, airlines, aeromedical centers), which will contribute to the increase of the level of flight safety.

BACKGROUNDRESEARCH

The goal of the research activities is to be one of the few scientific centers, which focuses primarly on the Human Factors of civil aviation. Air traffic is progressively growing in the world, more operating aircrafts require more suitable crew.

The airlines, however require guarantees that the pilots are recruited correctly and their mental and sensory functions work properly.

On this field the center will provide a value-added service by the innovative testing methods.

LOCATIONThe center is located in Debrecen, which is the second largest city in Hungary and through dinamic development it became the financial, economical, scientifical and turistical center of Eastern Hungary.

STRATEGICPARTNERS

During the establishment of the center the functions of medical research and pharmacology were taking into consideration in mind as well. Strategic partners located in Debrecen, offering nationwide quality service with advanced technology as the University of Debrecen and Gyula Kenézy hospital. The fact that experts of both intstitutions are working with great commitment and on high level of proficiency played an important role in the choice of location.

The University of Debrecen is the second largest university in Hungary with more than 30,000 students, which provides an excellent background for knowledge- based developments.

In 2012 the University of Debrecen was awarded with the title of research university, the elite university status.

Upon this, the university started a new research program.

ENVIROMENTDevelopment concept of Debrecen also emphasizes the establishment of high-value, innovative industries. The center is located adjescent to the Debrecen International Airport in a developing new business enviroment, 5 km distance from the city center of Debrecen.

1 Airbus 320-200 Full Flight Simulator (FFS), which meets the highest available level in CS-FSTD A Level D with CFM56-5B4 and IAE V2527-A5 engine version

1 Boeing 737-800 (FTD), which meets the requirements prescribed in CS-FSTD A Level 2 with CFM56-7 engine version, designed in such a way that by installing the motion system later it can easily fulfill the required FFS CS-FSTD A Level D Level requirements

INTERNATIONALAVIATION CENTER

The pilot trainings are moving in a wide range from initial pilot training to type rating trainings:

The International Aviation Center will be located in the Pharma-Flight Center, and will become a certified ATO (Approved Training Organisation) according to European Union legislations. The training organization will be capable of providing all sort of trainings, to which further aircraft simulators, and aircrafts will be obtained.

The Center will work together with the University of Debrecen, school-based pilot training will be an outbased department of the University of Debrecen.

The Center will be suitable for the aeromedical examinations and certification as follows:

- All EASA medical examinations (Class 1, 2, LAPL, ATCO, Cabin Crew)

- FAA and Transport Canada medical examinations all classes

- Space passenger examination for Virgin Galactic flights.

In addition, we indend to launch a number of research programs that develop medical classification system on a long term based on the complete research of human performance.

The examinations will be completed according to the international protocols and specifications.

Additional examinitions ordered on the basis of additional clinical indications may be carried out at the co-operating hospitals.

The activities of the aero-medical center can be divided into 4 areas:

PHYSICAL-AND MENTAL PERFORMANCE

The innovative test methods analyse the heart, circulation, respiratory and metabolic processes in rest position and during exercise, or after excercise. The method is suitable for the health and physical performance evaluation.

By examination of the heart – like wave and rhythm analysis, Theta, alpha waves, functioning of cerebral hemispheres - tests give an objective picture of the resting cardiac perfusion, cardiac autonomic status, the ability to take on relaxation, stress-induced excited reality and its processing capacity.

The physical and mental performance is measured by treadmill and bike and in training situations in the simulators too. In the testing process there will be already sensors installed in the examination beds which will observe the pilots right before they attend the flight trainings.

PHYSICAL-AND MENTAL PERFORMANCE

The rest tests performed before and immediately after the flights will makes it easy to analyze the resting level of the pilots and the the effects of flight situations on the body.

During the flights in the simulator the biological parameters of the pilots will be recorded real time and online by telemetry, which can provide very useful information how the pilot can perform during a flight and how effectively can manage specific tasks which are part of the flight checks, like emergency situations.

The data can be compared with the flight performance/events as the simulator can play them back in real time.

Similar research in the automotive industry in Hungary has been carried out already.

The special medical examinations in conjunction with the standard aeromedical examinations give the opportunity to establish science-based individual medical certifications.

The aim is to get approval for the new medical assessment system by the aero-medical academic community and international regulatory organizations (ICAO, EASA, FAA).

The individual certifications can

- contribute to increase of flight safety, by inserting it into the Safety Management System of the airlines and give guarantee to airlines in terms of the competence of the pilots

- be used in developing individual training programmes for pilots aiming the development of the necessary skills and in the recruitment of crew based on their performance

- provide individaul health prevention program and also opportunities for pilots to assess their competence after accident rehabilitation programs and during diseases

- be used in developing individual trainingprogrammes for pilots aiming the development of the necessary skills and in the recruitment of crew based on their performance

AEROMEDICALCENTERINFRASTRUCTURE

In the center innovative research rooms will also be available next to the simulators. A part of the pilot studies and the researches will take place here as well. The participants in the researches can use these rooms as accommodation also.

For others, we offer also accommodation near the center.

Due to the proximity of accomodation, the pilots can take advantage of their time on the most efficient way and they can devote all their energy into training.

The center also offers a variety of health care sand recreation services to provide more complete recovery between the two sessions, a well-equipped wellness and gym is also available.

By this, the physical performance examiniations can further be extended with the effects of the recreation.

AEROMEDICAL CENTERRESEARCHES

The primary aim by the activities of the research center is to contribute to human performance optimization.

The technical development made the technology in aviation very safe but at the same time the researches of human factors and its constrains is in leeway.

The main fields of our research programmes:- decrease the number of human errors and the

severity of consequences due to the different physiological circumstances during the flight

- optimise the pilots’ flight and rest time- analyse the effect and side effect of the even

wider scales of medicines used on board, expecially in situations accompanied by stress

- investigate the connection between the age of the commercial pilots and the high work load and the handling of potential emergency situations in order to access the effect on flight safety of the continously increasing age limit of retirement

In commercial aviation, the age limit and duty time for pilots are constantly raised for economic and other reasons.

However few studies were conducted regarding the effects of such changes.

The effects of flight and rest time regulations, the raising of age limit of retirement, the changes in mental and sensory functions with ageing are just some of the unexplored areas.

There is little information available on pilot’s ability to act regarding medicines, non-qualifying medical products, nutritional supplements taken prior to or under flight. Their combined effects under the specific conditions of the flight (eg.: hypoxia) were slightly studied so far.

MEDICATION EFFECTS

The center will be suitable to perform the lack of researches.

- to carry out research related to the specific drug development (analytic, toxicologic, safety pharmacologic, pharmacological, clinical phase trials), and

- to examine the physiological effects of flight by the coomon use of full-flight simulators and special devices, leaving room for the conduction of aeromedical tests-researches

Based on the above, the center provides opportunity for research staff, and for companies engaged in research and development.

Based on the results of researches a small series of drugs can be developed, which can be used safely in flight conditions.
