To say that therewere three days ofgreat jazz can’tbegin to describethe excitement fora jazz loving pho-tographer at New-port.

I have been therefor the last few

years on assignment for AI News. Eachyear I think this is absolutely the bestone ever. At the time that is certainlytrue until it is upended by the next yearwhich becomes the best ever.

Few musicians can compare with thepassion of the heart and soul of jazz. Asa photographer my challenge is to cap-ture the essence that passion. Each yearI almost do it but can’t wait for the nextyear to try again. Ω

Ibecame a member of IFPO in 1999 and enrolled in the Gold Press Program. Since that time I amno longer just another guy with a camera, but a serious photographer with the backing of a profes-sional editorial staff at Today’s Photographer International Magazine. My press credentials get

me through the doors. The editorial support provides officials with the verification which is required inthis age of heightened security. Over the years thanks to IFPO I have been able to cover breaking news events, concerts, trade shows, air shows and many other special events which has led to many publication opportunities and credits. Someof the major highlights have been covering Bruce Springsteen, the Beach Boys and Dropkick Murphys concerts. I havealso covered several Atlantic Canada International Air Show productions.

After having much success with the Gold Press Program, I also decided to enroll in the AI News Service (Universal)and the US PRESS CORPS programs.Having all three of the fully supported press programs has allowed me to meetmedia criteria for a broader range of the tougher events. This year 2019 I will celebrate my 20th year as a member ofIFPO with pride. I will continue to use my media credentials with confidence and professionalism for many years tocome. Thanks to IFPO! Music Festival Photography can beboth rewarding and challenging on anygiven day.

Each year millions of people attendmusic festivals around the country. Some are small local events and someare monster events such as I-Heart orCochella Music Fest.

Photographic coverage can be excit-ing and overwhelming at the sametime. You must have a plan uponarrival or face total chaos. Ask your-self a few questions to get organized? What gear will you use? How do youovercome the logistic challenges withsecurity, media PR firms, performersand organizers?

For 25 years I've had the pleasure ofcovering the Essence Music Festival in

New Orleans. Each yearover 500,000 people trav-el to New Orleans to cele-brate African AmericanCulture, music, motiva-tional seminars and ofcourse the food. Entertain-ers perform at the Super-dome for 3 nights duringthe 4th of July weekend.Coverage of an event ofthis size takes a lot ofplanning, so I hope thefollowing tips will behelpful covering anyevent.Planning with a clear

idea of what you want toaccomplish before youarrive is critical to yoursuccess . Having a well

though out game plan will save youfrom lot of problems on the scene.Remember almost every news outletwill be there and press credentials areextremely limited as well as vantagepoints for shooting. To compete withthe other news agencies you’ll needproof that you are a working journalistor photographer. This is whereToday's Photographer Internationalmagazine backs you up. The value ofhaving your work published will notonly build your portfolio but willallow event planners, PR firms andpress organizers know that you areproviding news coverage that will ben-efit and promote their event or festivalvia American Image Press. It a win,win for everyone. So start early with

proof of your published work.Logistics can be a nightmare with-

out a plan. Essence is so huge, I like toarrive a day early. This allows me toget a feel for getting around, find park-ing and where the media center islocated. If you are flying to NewOrleans I highly suggest booking yourflight 6 month advance to get a goodrate -- 3 months minimum. Also rentalcars and hotels can disappear quickly. You don’t want to stay 50 miles aaway from the Superdome becauseyou didn’t book your reservationearly. Media staff and security are key to

your success. Essence Festival hasbeen around since 1995. I was fortu-nate to get in on the ground floor andmeet various PR teams, media staffand security. As a working photojour-nalist your reputation with these peo-ple is everything. It is very importantto be profession, polite and go with theflow when working with each of them.

This is a major event so they areunder pressure to deliver a successfulevent, which can cause stress and ten-sion among the publicists, entertainersand security team. Do not add to theirstress!

The goal is to get the story or photothat you need. Sometime this may nothappen due to performers, contractors,or agreements. If you are understand-ing and know the rules, your chancesof returning the next year increase.Your job is not to make theirs harder.which brings me to next point.Be on time. Essence requires media

to check in each night for security. Theworld can be dangerous so security atmajor events is very strict. My adviceis if check in time is 5 p.m., arrive anhour earlier. This is gives you time topark, get checked in, relax and prepare

for the work ahead. Trust me securitywill not be your friend if you are late. It’s time to shoot! There is nothing

more exciting than being in the photopit or in front of a stage preparing tocover a live concert or event. Erica

Badu, Lionel Richie,Stevie Wonder, GladysKnight. Mary J Bilge,Charlie Wilson and somany others I've pho-tographed over theyears. It never get old.

The roar of thecrowd and the lights godown. You have 3songs only to capturethe event if you arelucky. This is whereyour skills as a photog-rapher come in. I won’tgo into detail abouttechnical skill, howeverhaving a fast lens isrequired

I shoot with a Nikon70-200 mm f2.8. I carrya wide angle for crowdshots. You won’t need aflash for the perfor-

mance and no flash is allowed in thepress room which is usually filled withmedia and photographers from allover. So you want to respect eachother’s space while getting your shot. Iusually aim my flash at the ceiling somy light can bounce giving a niceeven light on the artist or performer. Ilike to travel light so I can be mobile. So a good camera bag that can be usedas a backpack will do the trick.

I hope some of the information pro-vided here will make your next assign-ment a smooth and successful experi-ence. My last advice is to have fun andenjoy the camaraderie and experience.

You'll meet people from numerousnews outlets that may turn into otherassignments, shooting opportunities orlife long friendships. At the next showI hope to see you there!Ω.

Being a race photographer isnot just about getting toshoot fast cars up close. It’s

about telling a story. Trying to tell astory with just a couple of photos iswhat it will take to set you apart fromthe other photographers next to you. Iam lucky to be off to an amazingcareer in race photography, because Ibelieve I can bring the race to life formy viewers. This comes from myextensive interest and knowledge ofnot only photography, but also racing.

It takes a lot of research and dedica-tion to get the right shot at the righttime. Not only will you need the bestaccess, the fastest glass, or the physi-

cal ability to be everywhere at once, you must be able to see the shot beforeit happens. You must be able to takethe perfect shot at any time. There aremany tricks and techniques that can beused to get the perfect shot, but if youcan combine all your knowledge andresearch into the split second youcould be the difference from being onthe cover, to not getting published atall.

Racing photography is no walk inthe park. Just being a professionalphotographer isn’t enough. You mustunderstand racing. You need to knowwhat the cars are doing always andknow the drivers well enough to pre-

dict what they will do next. Beingable to decipher between a car onits racing line, and a car that is los-ing control, can be what sets youapart from the hobby photographer.Race photographers put their liveson the line in every race to get theperfect shot. You need to be able toget as close as possible whileensuring you stay safe at the sametime. Understanding where themost likely place a car will losecontrol, or placing safety barriersbetween you and the race, are

things that you will not learn in acamera class.

Safety aside, the next thing youneed to know is the sun angle. Everycar on the track has been polished toglisten in the sunlight. This means ifyou are at a spot where the son isreflecting into your lens, you need toeither move to a less appealing spot orfind a way to make the sun work forthe type of story you are trying to tell. The sun will be at different placesthroughout the race weekend, and youshould plan your shooting aroundwhere it will be during the day. ForLaguna Seca, early morning shots ofcars screaming down the corkscrew is

Many times over the years aphotographer has called orwritten to report that his or

her photos have been used without permis-sion, or with permission but without pay-ment, photo credit or other related prob-lems. In ninety-nine percent of the reportsthe problems could have been avoided byusing a cover letter or a simple agreementin writing or using an IFPO BusinessForm.

The following steps should provide pro-tection for most situations. 1) Copyrights are inherent to the photogra-

pher. However, an inventory list ofimages with the copyright notice(Ex:©2014) is a friendly reminder thatthe work is protected by copyright laws. Also a short notice such as, “All rightsreserved” could be added.

2) Each time a photo or digital imageleaves your possession, it should beaccompanied by signed and dated per-mission for use with terms and condi-tions stated. This is the first step to acontract for use -- even if no payment isinvolved. KEEP A COPY FOR YOURFILES.

3) Digital images require even more pro-tection. NEVER send your originalfiles. Not even just for someone to con-sider. Send a copy of digital images invery low resolution along with text filesof the first two items above.

4) Follow up by phone or email within 5-8business days to see if your imagesarrived and if there is interest etc. Men-tion that complete information is in thepackage.

5) ALWAYS send a postage paid returnenvelope when submitting by mail ifyou expect your work to be returned.

6) Submissions by email are just “outthere” in an unknown domain. It ismuch safer to mail a disc with yourname and copyright notice on the disc.We are not suggesting that you neveremail an image but you should knowand trust the receiver and believe thatterms for an agreement can be made.

7) Once there is an agreement for how animage is to be used, the terms must beset before the use occurs. Example: Onephoto may be used once for $25 or anyamount that is satisfactory. You mayeven want the benefit of having yourphotos published without payment. Ifso, that should be agreed upon up front.

8) Others conditions must also be met. Will you get photo credit? Will you geta copy of the work published? Can youbuy extra copies if you need them?

9) When is payment made? Upon publica-tion? Within 30 days? At the end of thepublishing cycle? It really doesn’t mat-ter as long as you understand and agreeto it.

10) Finally, all terms and conditionsshould be confirmed in writing and signedby both parties. Sounds like too muchwork? Not so. Two copies of a simplecover letter can do the job for you. Simplebusiness forms can do the job for you evenbetter. (See the offer for a lifetime supplyof IFPO Business Forms on pages 2 and 3for $39.95)

What happens if you have released yourimages without an agreement for use and

learn they have been used? Contact theuser. Try to work through the steps listedhere. Most everyone understands thatcopyright infringement can be serious busi-ness. In most situations, something fair andequitable can be negotiated even after pho-tos have been used.

It’s much easier to take the simple stepsrequired to protect your work at the time itleaves your possession than to try to getcontrol of it after use.

Keeping a log of photo packages, digitalimages etc that are in the hands of potentialusers helps you track usage, payments andpackages that should be returned. It alsooften serves as a reminder of where yourbest work is located and where and whyyou should submit it elsewhere.

Using business forms designed especial-ly for photographers not only help protectyour work, it’s a short cut to learning aboutcopyrights, rights to use, terms and condi-tions. Just select the form that seems tomatch your job and complete it! Youshould never have to worry about protect-ing the use of your photos again.

Finally, posting photos on social net-working sites is not recommended. If youpost a photo of a logo or trademark (prosports uniforms etc) without permission ofthe owner of such, you are violating logoand trademark regulations which could getyou into trouble. Don’t do it -- even thoughyou own the copyright to the photo. Youcan submit such photos for editorial pur-poses to a recognized publisher, TV orbroadcast outlets as a news item or a fea-ture story. So always remember to protectyourself as well as your work. Ω

IFPO’s Stock Listing ServiceThe following elements clearly distinguish the

differences in the IFPO Stock Listing Service anda stock agency:1. The service provided to IFPO members is a

STOCK PHOTO LISTING SERVICE andNOT an agency.

2. Each photographer manages his own sales.3. No commissions will be charged ever. 4. Image buyers will browse the IFPO image

bank on the internet, select the photos, get theprice, index number and contact information toorder directly from the photographer whoowns the images.

5. Members may set their own pricing for eachphoto sold.

6. Complete copyright standards will be avail-able at the site for image buyers and IFPOmember photographers (the sellers).

7. Image searches by buyers may be made bysubject.

8. The most important part of any Stock PhotoService is its indexing system that allows an

image buyer to identify a photo for purchase.Members are asked to identify their pictures bytheir 5 digit member number plus a 5 charactercode of their own choosing. Example: IFPOmember 99999 might use Index Codes of99999-KID01, 99999-KID02, etc.

Successful stock libraries contain HIGH QUALITY images of everyday life situations. IFPO members shoot such images everyday as a matter ofcourse. However, unless a photographer has hundreds or thousands of images, he may be shunned by the large stock houses. This could happen for tworeasons, he simply may not be recognized as a successful stock photographer or his stock of a few dozen images is too small for an agency to consider. The IFPO Stock Listing service removes these barriers totally and opens doors to the international sales market.

Spending sum-mers growing upin Sacramento

with my dad, who wasthe Chief Course Mar-shal for the SCCA SanFrancisco Region, Ideveloped a love of carsfor life! When I starteddoing photography, atabout the age of 10, pho-tographing cars seemedlike the natural thing todo since I spent a lottime around LagunaSeca and Sears PointRacetracks.

Growing up in NorthDakota the rest of theyear removed me fromthe constant racing scene of summers. Sowhen I was old enough to go on my own Iwould take my camera and go to BrainerdInternational Raceway (BIR) – since noone else in my ND family liked racingvery much!

When I moved to Iowa almost 30 yearsago, I finally was able to attend races atRoad America! American Image Presswas able to help me gain access as a PressPhotographer for about 15 years. I enjoyedalmost every minute of being able to getthat up close and personal to the majorrace series cars!

I don’t really remember when I got myfirst publication, but somewhere in “1980something” for the cover of the ND RECmagazine! I have also had a few thingspublished in Today’s Photographer Inter-national magazine over the years. I amvery grateful and proud to have been pub-lished internationally which led to publica-tion in other magazines as well! Andhopefully, I can get published more in thefuture! It takes a lot of experience in thefield and working with editors to under-

stand how to shoot for publication at thescene. You want to capture that shot thateditors can’t resist so you can’t wait forluck. You must plan it.

About 10 years ago I took a break fromgoing to races because it seemed like moreand more people associated with thoseevents were becoming rude or struck onthemselves or whatever. I just decided to

take a break from the frus-tration and spend my timephotographing other thingsthat make a lot of noise andgo fast such as the BlueAngels, Thunderbirds,Sprint Cars and more.

In 2018, I decided to goback to the races just for thelove of the cars and atmos-phere of the track -- thistime as a spectator. RoadAmerica is a great track forthe fans to get very goodshots. With the right equip-ment, a little luck andmaybe even a little bit oftalent, you can end up withsome great images! All thephotos in this story were

shot by me -- a spectator!I have had a project in mind to shoot for

a very long time. It seems that all racingphotos are similar cars going round andround at high speeds sometimes spinningout of control. Often the real interest andaction are behind the scenes -- in thepits!.When I was paying for my own slidefilm and

E.G. Kight, also known as TheGeorgia Songbird, is a top award win-ning female blues artist from DublinGA. She tours all over the country butparticularly frequents the jazz/bluestrail located in the southern states. When I learned this feisty little blondewould be belting out the blues in Tal-lahassee, Florida, I searched online forthe contact person and quickly sent anemail requesting media clearance.

It wasn’t long before I receivedmedia approval. I called immediatelyconfirm the address and to say thanks.I had no idea until then that this con-cert would be taking place in a quaintlittle setting nestled deep in the woods.I am accustomed to shooting in a largeconcert venue. My interest was mostdefinitely peaked!

Proper preparation, careful organiza-tion and planning are all key elementsin being successful regardless of thetype of photo shoot. I carry two cam-eras and two flash units. I use onecamera to hold a long lens and theother camera to hold a short lens. Ihave found rechargeable flash batterieswork best and is far more economical.I often pack a tripod and a monopod inthe trunk of my car in case I needthem. I find that packing the nightbefore keeps my stress level to a mini-mum and I feel more confident andprepared for the excitement that liesahead the next day. I always dressappropriately, similar to what I wouldwear if I were attending the event as aguest.

The day of the event I made my waywith anticipation to the venue. Thisevent location was down a dusty dirt

road winding through a dark moonlitpath that led to a huge open area withseveral large old oak trees. There weremany cars already parked beneath thetrees and along the rugged dirt road.

It was a beautiful night. As I lookedup, I noticed what seemed like a mil-lion little twinkling lights up in theSpanish moss that draped from thehuge limbs of the magnificent old oaktrees. I soon realized the lights werenot placed in the trees but were pro-jected into the trees with the use ofprojector. The twinkling light gave theappearance of walking into anenchanted forest! To the left was ahuge bonfire where large logs andfolding chairs were available to sit onwhile enjoying a cold brew and gazinginto the glow of a roaring fire. Directlyacross from the fire area was a smalllittle building where an older womanwas busy frying catfish, mullet andFrench fries for sale…mmm, I can stillsmell the aroma!

Directly ahead was the mainentrance to the quaint cinder blockbuilding that was covered with a whiteawning. Tables were set up to viewand purchase CD’s and a kind womannamed Ms. Penny was waiting atanother table to collect the entrancecharge from the customers.

I made my way to the entrance andintroduced myself. I politely asked forthe promoter. Within minutes hearrived with a warm handshake andhug. Oh yes, Southern hospitality at itsbest! He took me on a tour of thegrounds and explained the rich historyof this exquisite little blues club.

I was very astonished as he eagerly

shared the stories of the many legendsthat had performed there and the inter-esting reports of how many receivedtheir start in the music business there.A historical marker stands outside theclub with a short detail about the clubhistory. After a brief tour of thegrounds and a quick history lesson, Iwas led into the club.

To my surprise, the famous GeorgieSongbird herself, E.G. Kight was rightthere patiently signing autographs and

snAPsHotof A sUPEr stArDani Pedrosa is a sports photographers’s dream. His dedication and competitive racing skills always provide a challenge as he races

his way to the front of the pack. I learned to shoot sports action from my dad, IFPO member Julio Cano. We have been covering MotoGP World Championship events for many years with the help of AI New Service. All of the racers are exciting but few capture yourimagination and spirit such as Dani.

His retirement at the end of the 2018 season to become a development test rider for the KTM MotoGP team for 2019 and 2020 left hisfans and photographers with an empty spot in our hearts for the youngest world champion in 250 cc Grands Prix. In spite of never beinga MotoGP world champion, Pedrosa won races in twelve consecutive seasons in the championship (2006–2017). He has also finished aschampionship runner-up on three occasions (2007, 2010 and 2012). Pedrosa spent 13 seasons riding for Repsol Honda until the end of2018. He will be missed at many of the greatest European Racing Circuits. IGOR CANO IFPO MADRID, SPAIN.

I had the privilege of obtaining press credentials for Pegasus, the world'srichest race, at Gulfstream Race Track in 2018. A line-up of 12 incrediblecontenders, including the top 5 finishers from the previous Breeders' CupClassic, plus the first filly ever, "Stellar Wind" ran in the Pegasus.

Gun Runner, a five year old, was one of the contenders. In 2017, he wonfour Grade 1 races, the Stephen Foster Handicap; Whitney Stakes; Wood-ward Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic. In addition to winning the EclipseAward for Horse of the Year, he also won their award for 2017 Older DirtHorse. After winning the Pegasus, he will now be retired to stud, and onlyrun in green pastures. Ω

Do you ever wonder what goes onbehind the scenes with the majestichorses other than training? They arenot only skilled athletes, they are alsoamazingly sleek and well groomed.

I learned that massage for horses iscommon in and around the major rac-ing venues. Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt(Hoo-Da-Bay), a native of France, has had a very successful career treat-ing many well-known athletes andanimals from around the world. Hisempathy and compassion for animalsallows him to communicate withthem to earn their trust.

This led him to develop the Mas-sage Awareness Method for animals. His holistic approach and expertise inhis field, has enabled animal lovers todevelop and enjoy healthier, happier, and more productive equine andcanine friends. This method allowshorses and other animals to developtrust and a loving rapport with him, soapparently he makes them feel better.

For aviation enthusiasts living in the Maritime Provinces, the Atlantic CanadaInternational Air Show has been the highlight of many summers. Since the early1980's there have been 35 air shows held at various airports throughout the region. The 2018 Atlantic Canada International Air Show was held at the former CanadianAir Force base in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

Upon arrival one could not help but feel the excitement of the thousands of spec-tators who had gathered to witness heart pounding air displays and fascinatingground exhibits. The first thing the spectator saw upon arrival was the impressivestatic ground display which included military and civilian aircraft. This was theopportunity for the general public to have up close and personal access to aircraftthat would normally not be available to the average person. There were many planesthat could boarded and have a hands on tour. Such aircraft included a US Air ForceKC-135 Stratotanker, a Royal Canadian Air Force Polaris CC-150 transport planeand a Royal Canadian Air Force CH-149 Cormorant helicopter.

entire Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbird Squadron and the CF-18 Demo parked side by side. The theme of theCF-18 Hornet demo for 2018 is the 60th Anniversary of NORAD and is flown by Captain Stefan "Porcelain" Porte-ous.

When the time came for the air display all eyes were looking to the sky for what would be exciting performancesof precision acrobatics, military power and historical military aircraft. Demonstrations included: The CanadianArmed Forces Parachute Team "Skyhawks", a Pitts S-2 Biplane, a DH-1 Vampire, a World War I Biplane replica, aRCAF CP-140 Aurora and a RCAF CH-146 Griffon Helicopter.

Other demonstrations included Gary Ward's MX2 aircraft performing gravity defying acrobatics. It should benoted that the Pilot, Gary Ward is 77 years old. If that was not enough there was also a heart pounding performanceby the iconic Canadian Forces "Snowbirds" and the 2018 CF-18 Hornet demo jet. The Snowbirds and the CF-18Hornet demo have become crowd favorites and never disappoint! For aviation fans, it does not get any better thanthis.

With the successful 2018 Atlantic Canada International Air Show now in the past, all eyes are on Greenwood,Nova Scotia where the 2019 air show will be held. The show will take place at 14 Wing CFB Greenwood onAugust 31st and September1st. Air Show Atlantic held a second air show in the region in 2019 featuring UnitedStates Navy's Blue Angels frequent along with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds in Debert, Nova Scotia on June 19,2019.

Air shows are unusually exciting and educational for all ages. We are reminded of our flying history especiallywith military aircraft. We also learn about some of our current military capabilities. Civilian aircraft which are alsoa vital part of our current public safety services are often overlooked or taken for granted. Capturing the speed andspirit of such an event is truly a challenge for me as a photographer. Ω

proud that I captured an image that expresses the great American spirit in the midst ofone of the worst crisis our county has ever faced.

What makes me prouder is the (WTC) and I have agreed on the use rights for 100years which means it will remain in that spot for 100 years. That enforces my mission of

not to forget. This has beenmy journey from the time Iphotographed it as the lastbeam standing at GroundZero until its return

Throughout the many yearsof capturing the tragedies, there were many, manyheart warming moments. It is amazing to be a partof that spirit

Workers found three crosses in the rubble atGround Zero -- a reminder thatour country was built on Chris-tian faith. Many were heart-ened that these crosses weresymbolic of that faith andbelieved they were left there asan assurance that the victimswere in Heaven with Christ.First responders, familiesmembers and Americans atlarge often gathered there topray, leave flowers or personalitems and find comfort. Thusthe cross became the symbol ofhope and recovery for theWTC.

Twenty-five smaller crosses were craftedfrom the rubble (near right) and placedthroughout the city in remembrance and thanksto those that lost their lives there.

My Journey also included the last GroundZero cross which was removed from the rub-ble. It was placed in several different locationsnear the site before it was returned to its final restingplace for all time -- the WTC Museum.

In early July 2011, I received a call from a goodfriend Richie Sheirer to tell me that he had a latebirthday present for me -- the Ground Zero Crosswas being returned to WTC! He asked that I bethere to capture history in real time -- a thoughtfuland memorable birthday gift. It was a great day andhour, the Ground Zero Cross was home again. Justtwo weeks later Richie passed away.

It was also a good day in view of all that happenedafter the fall of the WTC. I have spent so manyhours, days and now years at this place known asGround Zero. It was wonderful to see so many posi-tive things going on all over the place. I wish I couldthank all of those who continued to keep me in theloop pertaining to everything Ground Zero. Duringthis most important photo project of my life I had thehonor of meeting a few good men, true heroes andmy new friends. The Iron Workers were among thebest -- job well done.Ω

It is fun and inspiring when I come across AmericanImage Press photographers in the field on assignment. Itis an absolute joy when two of them are my family mem-bers (a cousin and nephew both of whom I introduced tothis wonderful news organization), and were available tocover an event with me for the first time.

I particularly like the idea that we represent differentcamera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, and Sony) -- ANDdifferent press programs within IFPO (American ImageGold Press, United States Press Corps, and AmericanInternational News Service (AINS).

Henry Smith AINS.

Now five years since my first “Making A Good Im-PRESS-ion” article was published in Today’sPhotographer International Magazine, I contin-

ue to have a great relationship with the NASCAR and othersports’ media officials. I mention this because while cover-ing this year’s race at the Pocono International Raceway, Ilearned of a photographer whose credentials were revoked!!

I like to think that I have a great moral standard. I followAINS’ and the venues’ Press Photographers’ Code of Ethicsfaithfully. Even when celebrities, managers, press officials, and law enforcement officers have been OUTRIGHTRUDE to me, I maintained my path on the moral highground. Wasn’t always easy but I did so anyway. I had, and

will continue to NEVER compro-mise my professionalism as a mem-ber of the working press by engagingin behaviors that would jeopardizemy credentials or on-assignment sta-tus. I digress. Anyway, about therace….

As I have done every year prior, Icompleted the NASCAR online presscredentials application with help andsupport from our editorial chief,Vonda Blackburn. They require it toinitially be submitted by an editor orsports editor.

A few weeks later, I received con-firmation that I was approved tocover the Green 250 and the Pocono400 Races on May 31 – June 2, 2019.

Veteran driver, Kyle Busch enteredthe 160th and final lap ahead of sec-ond-place winner Bradley Aaron

Keselowski and the other racers in thePocono 400 main event. He has now

was his third at Pocono InternationalRaceway. He roared his brightly col-ored #18 Toyota M&M’s/Skittles autopast the third and final turn of theTricky Triangle (which this raceway isplayfully dubbed as). Known for it'sdifficult three turns causes drivers toquestion WHAT TURN 4?

Currently, Busch holds the topranking in the championship rankings

following four wins this season. Hesurpassed Joey Logano who was tiedwith him before this race.

I am happy to say that I have gonecompletely full frame / 42 megapixelsfor this and other major sportingevents up from two crop-sensor cam-eras at 24 megapixels just two yearsago. I also now own a 300m f2.8prime lens. With my two new Sony

With an American InternationalNews Service Press Credential andguided by a rigorous code of ethics,(my cameras and) I can get to whereneeded in order to provide first-ratecoverage of this and other newswor-thy events .Ω

The International Freelance Photographers Organization (IFPO) was founded in 1984. Now, thirtyone years and more than 80,000 members later, the original mission of IFPO -- to be the primarysource of support for the universe of freelance photographers -- has stood the test of time and has sure-ly grown beyond the wildest imaginations of the original founders and charter members. Now by pop-ular demand freelance journalists and other media professionals are also taking advantage of IFPO'sunique programs. Membership is open to everyone.

Because of the broad range of services developed over the years to meet the extensive interests ofthe membership base, our programs and services are now fully explained on the internet along with theitems that are included in each program. IFPO Members ’ D i rectory of Serv ices

More than seven years agoto celebrate the 25thAnniversary of IFPO

many things were considered. Theintent was to commemorate our first25 years in a way to honor the contri-butions of the members who had beenthe driving force and heart of the orga-nization. After long deliberation it wasdetermined to induct those still activecharter members and other deservingmembers into a permanent FreelancePhotographer’s Hall of Fame and toaward each an Honorary Degree ofDistinction title.

When the International FreelancePhotographers Organization (IFPO)was founded in 1983, no one couldhave possibly foreseen 25 to 30 yearsinto the future. Now, 30 some yearslater, the original mission of IFPO --to be the primary source of support forthe universe of freelance photogra-phers -- has stood the test of time andhas surely grown beyond the wildestimaginations of the original foundersand members.

IFPO’s first member was actuallyenrolled on January 9, 1984. Fromthat day forward IFPO evolved into amember driven organization. Thatsimply means that members asked forservices and support and IFPOresponded with research and develop-ment. That process evolved over theyears to make IFPO what it is today, the longest continuing central sourceof support for freelance photographersaround the world.

Fortunately, it was easy to identifythe original Hall of Fame candidates.Since day one IFPO has maintained atransactional data base that recordsevery single activity of each IFPO

member. That includes program par-ticipation, editorial submissions, pressassignments, photo contest entrantsand other information such as publish-ing credits, internet home pages URLsand more. Many members have sharedtheir success stories outside IFPOwhich is also noted in our membershiprecords. The original process pinpoint-ed 3319 IFPO members (out of 78,656at that time) to be permanently induct-ed into the IFPO Hall of Fame.

The first Hall of Fame IFPO mem-bers were inducted on January 2,2008. Each one was notified by letteror e-mail. If you were not notified, butbelieve you may qualify, you maycheck to see if your name is listed as aHall of Fame member atwww.ifpo.net/halloffame. Enter yourmember number plus the first 3 char-acters of your last name (8 characterstotal). If you were inducted your namewill appear on the list.

It is possible that there are deserv-ing Hall of Fame Members that wewere not able to identify from ourextensive records and other researchwho should be honored. If you did notreceive notification of your inductionand feel that you should be considered, please call 336-468-1138 to updateyour records and discuss your poten-tial to be inducted.

To further honor and recognize theFreelance Photographers Hall of Famemembers, IFPO created a unique, definitive Hall of Fame Portfolioexclusively designed to share the Hon-orary Degree of Distinction withclients and the most discerning friendsand family. Each item in the portfoliois graced with the distinctive IFPOHall of Fame Logo.

T h eportfolio includes 1 Commemorative25th Anniversary IFPO Hall of FameLapel Pin of silver inlaid into a field ofblack, 1 IFPO Hall of Fame HonoraryDegree of Distinction Diploma andCharter in a Leatherette PresentationCase plus 1 IFPO Hall of Fame Mem-ber Passport distinctly marked.

The Freelance Photographer’s Hallof Fame will be permanently locatedon the IFPO internet site. Each Hall ofFame member’s record will be alsomarked permanently. But it is the Hallof Fame Portfolio -- The Lapel Pin,Honorary Degree of Distinction Diplo-ma, Charter and Passport ... that con-vey the prestige of being inducted intothe IFPO Freelance Photographer’sHall of Fame.

Congratulations to each of you. Itwas your lasting interest and ceaselesssuggestions that drove an organizationfrom its infancy in 1983 to more than82,000 plus members strong withinternational recognition in 2016 ...and still growing.

With your continued interest theIFPO Hall of Fame will continue toreview members’ qualifications andinduct even more members in the nexttwenty-five years. Ω

IFPO's veteran press members were pushing into global calamities and war zones from Hurricane Katrina, the Hait-ian Earthquake, Indonesian Tsunami, Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, Sudan Civil Strife and more. These members asked for acomplete program with more items and international recognition to get them into the biggest news events around the world. The AI News Universal is the most complete press program offered by IFPO. A press photographer’s reputation is based on his own code ofethics. Although getting the story is the ultimate goal, ethical stan-dards can “make or break” a career. It is the duty of a press photog-rapher to document newsworthy happenings — never altering cir-cumstances or interfering with action to enhance your photographs.your photos should tell a story just as it happened. meeting the highstandards of press photography requires patience, determinationand strong ethics.

First, foremost and always remember that Press access is aprivilege not to be abused. use the following Code of ethics toguide you:• Arrive early — at least 45 minutes before an event is scheduled

to begin — to find the press area, check out the stage or facilitylay-out and choose a vantage point.

• never show up unprepared. not only should you have all theproper equipment, you should have a basic knowledge and under-standing of the event. do your homework!

• try to work with promoters and authorized officials not againstthem.

• Conduct yourself in a professional manner. Photographers whocomplain or cause problems aren’t likely to be admitted again.•Don’t just start shooting. think about what you’re covering.

• stay within the boundaries of the press area. never interfere

with the action, criticize a player or performer or interrupt an offi-cial.

• Exercise patience. resist the urge to inconvenience other pho-tographers by changing positions. your opportunity will come.

• Although it is necessary to get a good position, courtesypays. Other photographers are usually willing to share their space-- if you share yours. develop good relations with other membersof the press.

• Always live up to your obligations to promoters and publica-tions. Press photos are for editorial purposes only -- not to be soldcommercially nor to be posted on social media sites.

• Posting press photos on social media sites violates this code.• Always clean up after yourself -- snack wrappers, water bottles

etc.• never photograph anyone in a compromising situation (back-

stage, locker rooms) unless it’s a public figure in a public placewhich qualifies for news. never abuse the privileges of the press.

• remember you are a photographer on the job -- not a specta-tor.Finally, the nature of breaking news makes preparation impossi-

ble. however, you should use the same ethical standards as forscheduled media events. With practice and common sense, highethical standards should come as naturally as clicking the shutter. Ω

http://www.ifpo.net/dfaq

HOW IT WORKS1. DISTRIBUTOR DISCOUNT: You are enti-tled to order products and services from a cur-rent issue of Today's Photographer at a only50% of the listed standard price. For example:multiply list prices by 0.5 (a $68 membershipwould be $34.00). Half of $39.95 for example, would be $19.98 (rounded off to the nearestcent).2. QUANTITIES AND SHIPMENTS: Order inany quantity. IFPO will ship to you or your cus-tomer direct. No minimums or quotas.3. EXCLUSIONS: You CANNOT apply yourdistributor's discount to: USA or Foreign ship-ping • Workshop programs • Quantity discountpackages such as 3R0X, 3VVX, item numberscontaining “X”, or special offers with expirationdates • Classified and display a dvertising •Items in out-of-date issues may no longer bevalid • Items not sold by IFPO/American Imageare excluded. Items not sold in Today’s Photog-rapher magazine are excluded.

WHY YOU?•You may wish to purchase many IFPO pro-grams or services for yourself. A distributorshipwill save you 50%.•You may be associated with a group such as acamera club, family members or close associateswho may want to participate in IFPO productsand services at discount prices.•If you have a photography studio or similarbusiness may wish to arm all of your staff mem-bers with memberships and press program cre-dentials from IFPO to make them more competi-tive. An IFPO Distributorship would enablethem to do this at reduced costs to the studio orcompany.•You may want to start down the road of beingyour own boss with an IFPO distributorship. Youcan start small, order in any quantities, part timeor full time. Most of all, you may have a fewhours a week to invest in your financial future.

MAKE MONEY:•A distributor could sell only 2 videos a weekand net up to $2000.00 a year. He could buildhis business up to 200 videos a week and bepulling in potentially $200,000.00 per year.•A distributor could set up a network of 100Model Consultants "talent scouts" in an area.He would make nearly $15,000 just on themodel consultant kits and IFPO memberships, then would make more on the videos, forms, books and other items that consultants frequent-ly buy.•A distributor could sell to schools and educa-tional institutions. IFPO's instructional videosare very popular with schools of all kinds(Junior Highs, High Schools, Colleges, TradeSchools, etc.). Schools typically purchase inlarger quantities, often 10 to 20 videos at a time.Currently, about 100 schools are purchasingfrom IFPO. There are tens of thousands more inthis country alone.•Recreational groups sponsored by governmentor other non-profit groups. For example, Mili-tary bases have recreational programs thatinclude self-help and how-to programs on video.Currently, IFPO does a brisk business with mili-tary base purchase orders from only a few bases.•Many other groups sponsor recreational pro-grams that would be very interested in photogra-phy instructional videos. Groups plan trips.Vacationers use cameras and camcorders.•Photographer's swap meets or flee markets areideal places to set a booth and market IFPOproducts. In these situations, having merchan-dise to sell (like videos) is a plus. But if youdon't have the merchandise, be sure to get thename, address, and phone number of each per-son that stops by your booth. Each one is aprospective customer for the future. If you run

out of copies of Today's Photographer at yourbooth, you can always mail them one in thefuture with a special offer flyer of some kind.REPEAT CUSTOMERS

The best opportunity you have to makemoney as a distributor is to give your customersa REASON to do business with you. You canuse your own liberal distributor discount to youradvantage. If you can give your customers a 5or 10% discount by purchasing through you, then they have a reason to order with youinstead of ordering directly through mail orderwith IFPO. Your own margins may be a littleslimmer, but your volume would be much high-er.

Now you could consider distributingToday's Photographer Magazines liberally withyour business card attached and a notice thatoffers your own 5% or 10% discount if theyorder through you.

In this way, you would get the full advan-tage of repeat orders from the same customers. Here is a sample list of schools and institutionsthat have already placed large orders directlywith IFPO:

developing, I did not want to waste awhole roll of film on ONE pit stop! So thistime with digital, I decided to take a shot atit -- the story of a pit stop!

Anatomy of a Pit Stop is a series of shotsfrom a single pit stop -- up close and per-sonal! I still only shot this on “C L” tomake sure the memory buffer did not stopin the middle of the action! I ended up with

around 36 shots of the last pit stop of theday by the Takuma Sato team. I think thatthey turned out well and am happy withhow it worked out. We will see if theymight have value to that team.

I shot with a Nikon D810 and a 70–200lens at about f/8. Since I was just a specta-tor and not able to be right on the pit wallwith the press I had to adjust. Having

enough “mega-pixels” with the D810 I wasable to blow up the images to make itappear as if I was right in front of theaction!

I could almost see the photos on a pageas I was shooting. It took many yearsworking as a press photographer to get tothis point -- as a spectator! It remains to beseen if an editor somewhere will make my

There is a major difference in just tryingto get a good shot of a race or shootingwith a purpose. I choose purpose. Thatrequires more effort but better end results. My goal is to capture the race in it’s entire-ty -- not just on the track but behind thescenes -- especially in the pits. I want tocapture the whole story, including the spir-it of the event.

My goal is to capture photos that appealto publishers, the racing teams and spon-sors. To accomplish that one has to knowwhat kind of images appeal to each one.You also have to know where the vantagepoint is to capture each of these shots.

First I try to show up early for the week-end, Thursday evening if possible. Thatgives me a head start for Friday’s qualify-ing rounds and to get a feel for the vantagepoints for the actual race. I talk and listencarefully to learn who are the expectednewsmakers for this race. Then I plan andtry to get my ‘behind the scene’ shots.

For editorial purposes action and news-making shots are a must. Who takes thelead and goes on to win are the shots thateditors want. Traffic jams in the first fewlaps of a race are usually the best opportu-nity to capture large groups of cars inaction. These shots can challenge yourphotographic skills but do not have broadsales appeal or editorial use -- unlesssomeone totally unexpected breaks out ofthe pack and goes on to win. Winners Cir-cle shots are the trickiest (other than thepits) but are ‘must have’ for editors.

Teams are interested in shots that telltheir story. There is always a huge racegoing on in the pits. The action of theseprecision team members make the differ-ence in who crosses the finish line first!.Seconds make a difference here just asmuch as on the track.

When Team Cars are running closetogether, I try to capture them in the sameframe potentially for their publicity usage!

Driver shots are not that important exceptin the Winner’s Circle. Otherwise it is usu-ally easier to get shots of the newer dri-vers. Occasionally you get a shot of a pop-ular veteran driver but even those havevery little real value. I do not spend a lot oftime on drivers.

Sponsors want to see their names con-nected to the cars in action. I try to findgood backgrounds such a spot to shoot allcars running with a Chevy engine in frontof the Chevy wall. This ties the car directlyto the sponsor which may enhance itsvalue especially if it happens to win therace. Pit crew and human interest scenesalso appeal to sponsors.

This sounds like a lot of work and it is.But the end result is a body of work withvalue and a unique story. In addition tocompleting a job well done, there is poten-tial for sales and getting published. Most ofall is the satisfaction of knowing you haveaccomplished your mission. Ω
