This book contains over 2,000 useful Spanish word, with pictures to help you remember them. To helpyou identify words, nouns (naming words) are printedin roman lettering (el l ibra, book) and verbs (doing 0 'words), adjectives (describing words) and phrases initalics (grande, big).NounsSpanish nouns are either masculine or feminine (thisiscalled their gender). The Spanish word for "the"shows which gender a noun is. "The" is el when theword ismasculine and lawhen it is feminine. In theplural el becomes los and la becomes las.Sometimesthe following abbreviations are also used: (f)feminine, (m) masculine, (s) singular and (pl) plural.
In Spanish, nouns that describe what people do orwhat they are (e.g. dancer) often have a masculineand a feminine form. When they appear in theillustrated section of the book only the form whichmatches the picture isgiven, but both masculine andfeminine forms are given in the alphabetical word listat the back.
Spanish words often have a mark over one of thevowels (e.g. el baleen). This iscalled a stres mark andshows that you should emphasize that part of the '--\",,"~----.r!m:!lI:Z!:lt:{""'"".........Jword. You can find out more about pronouncingSpanish words atthe beginning of the word list onpage 109.AdjectivesAdjectives in Spanish change their ending dependingon whether the noun they are describing is masculineor feminine Most adjectives end in 0 in the masculineand the ochanges to a in the feminine.
In the pictures the adjective matches the nounillustrated. However it is useful to learn bothmasculine and feminine forms, so both are given inthe word box. When you see only one form, it meanthe masculine and feminine are the same.
U sing th is book
VerbsThroughout the book verbs appear in the infinit ive ("tohide, to look for" in English). In Spanish, infinitivesend in either ar, er or ir. You can find out how to useverbs on page 98 and there isa list of irregular verbon page103.
