Ms. Davies is currently the Manager of Development for the Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha Pine Ridge. Chief Williams also announced that Caroline MacIssac has resigned her post on the Board of Health as she has moved out of the country. A recruitment process continues to fill current board vacancies and interested community members are invited to learn more by contacting Alida Tanna, Administrative Assistance to the Medical Officer of Health at [email protected]. ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION AND HEALTH INDICATORS REPORT A joint project of the City of Peterborough, GreenUP, and the Peterborough County-City Health Unit, this 158-page report highlights the factors influencing rates of active transportation in our community and also illustrates the impact walking and cycling have on human and environmental health. It provides the tools and benchmarks needed to influence the social and physical landscapes for safer, healthier, and more sustainable travel in Peterborough County and City. Active transportation is an equity issue, as the report showed that residents who earn less than the city-wide median income are three times more often to walk, twice as likely to cycle, and ten times more likely to use public transit. The report also noted that research shows that if we increase pedestrian and cyclist traffic there is safety in numbers. FOOD INSECURITY IN PETERBOROUGH The annual Nutritious Food Basket survey, conducted in May 2014 by the Peterborough County-City Health Unit, consists of visiting seven grocery stores throughout the region to price 67 food items to determine the lowest available price for healthy food. While the 2014 Limited Incomes Report notes local food prices have increased by 7.6% over the past two years, the main issue for residents is not the cost of food, but that their incomes are too low. For example, after paying for his shelter costs, a single man receiving Ontario Works benefits would experience a monthly deficit of $245 each month if he spent the $286 required for a nutritious diet, after paying his shelter costs, and without considering the costs of other basic necessities such as clothing, transportation and medical costs. In this case, social assistance benefits are inadequate to cover the cost of a healthy diet and also meet basic living expenses. The problem of food insecurity exists not only for households receiving socia lassistance but also for those trying to live on minimum wage and other low wage employment. Food security is necessary for good health. Programs such as food banks, community meal programs and emergency food access programs provide essential short-term relief to those who are in need. Research shows that the root cause of food insecurity is poverty, therefore short-term strategies need to be part of a broader and longer-term strategy that addresses poverty. The board will advocate to the Minister Responsible for the Poverty Reduction Strategy, Deb Matthews, for an increase to social assistance rates and more clarity on the recently released provincial poverty reduction plan.
