    STUDENT PROFILE

For medical student Tegan Dobbie, one o thestrengths o Deakins course is the ocus on clinicalstudies learning the skills that doctors use daily.

Even seemingly simple processes like takinga medical history are complex, interesting, andvaluable, and there are many variables at play, she notes. The practical learning and contact withpatients reminds me why I want to do medicine, and makes the theoretical learning seem muchmore worthwhile.

Now in the third year o the our-year course,

Tegan says that Deakins support structures including being able to talk with lecturers, tutors, other students, the Division o Student Li e and

the Deakin University Student Association have helped her to maintain balance betweenher studies, work and extensive volunteeringcommitments.

As well as studying, Tegan is working part timeas a tutor and demonstrator in Deakins School o Li e and Environmental Sciences.

She has also represented Deakin medicalstudents at Australian Medical StudentsAssociation events around Australia and iscurrently undertaking a research project or ascholarship with the Royal College o Pathologistso Australasia.

The opportunities to be involved in researchand other extracurricular projects are part o whatmakes medicine so interesting and engaging, she says.

Tegan is passionate about the university

experience being more than just turning up orclasses and encourages others to get involved inthe social aspects o university li e.

The opportunities to be involved inresearch and other extracurricular projects are part of what makesmedicine so interesting and engaging.

    GRADUATE PROFILE

I remember having a discussion with my highschool careers counsellor. Have you ever thoughtabout studying medicine? he said. I laughed andthought there was no way I was ever going to becapable o getting into an undergraduate medicalcourse, nor did I want theresponsibility and workload thatcomes with a career in medicine. So I decided to study nursinginstead and worked in severalhospitals over a ew years. I always enjoyed thepatient contact but grew increasingly rustratedby the lack o autonomy so I began to look at otherpossible career paths. Law? Pilot? Florist?

Choosing to study medicine at Deakin was thebest decision I could have made. Ive now securedan intern position at St Vincents Hospital inMelbourne where I work closely with more seniordoctors, assisting them in their daily tasks. It is a

very well supported positionwhich gives me autonomy overthe basic care o my patients, with the security o knowingthere is always help available or

the more complex aspects o my patients needs.I am loving my job. Every day is diferent and

exciting, and I am constantly inspired by thestrength and spirit o the people I meet. I wouldntwant to be doing anything else!

Health care worldwide, and particularly in Australia, is encountering

a time o dramatic change in the ace o major challenges includingnancial constraint, increasing age o the population, and a needto shi t the ocus o health care towards prevention. In addition, it isrecognised that clinical care needs to improve in order to drive betterhealth, organisational and societal outcomes. Clinical leadership theactive participation in leadership and management by clinicians isrecognised as an essential prerequisite or undamental change inhealth care delivery.

Industry relevanceIn order to be e ective, clinicians need skills to enable them to bemore actively involved in the planning, delivery and trans ormationo clinical services. While clinical pro essionals must be technicalexperts in their chosen clinical discipline, being able to makemeaning ul change happen at various levels within the healthsystem to improve clinical care requires leadership skills not learnedin traditional pro essional courses.

Deakins Master o Clinical Leadership provides an opportunity orexperienced clinical pro essionals to acquire these skills in order topursue management and leadership roles in the health care industryand a ect change at all levels o health care.

Unique o ering The majority o postgraduate level masters programs in healthmanagement are largely pro ession speci c or ocused on non-clinicalmanagement within the broad health care system. Deakins Mastero Clinical Leadership speci cally addresses the need or clinicians toacquire increased management and leadership competencies with aocus on leadership and management within the clinical setting and

the broader Australian health care system. The course is aligned with Deakins strengths and outstandingreputation in business administration, health and human servicesmanagement, and public health. Throughout the course you will havethe opportunity to develop leadership and management skills as aresult o shared learning during intensive residential study programsand action learning in the workplace.

The course has an emphasis on o -campus/online learning andprovides you with the opportunity to undertake a range o electiveunits to explore areas o personal interest and the ability to carry out aresearch project i desired.

    Residential study programs

Residential units complement other study modes and attract studentswho want to manage their work commitments by completing a unitin a condensed period o time. O equal value is the opportunity tobuild pro essional networks and orm enduring bonds with ellowparticipants and other managers.

Each o the three dedicated clinical leadership units within the degreeare o ered as intensive residential programs. In this ormat, participantsimmerse themselves in leadership and management topics, andundertake innovative and experiential learning activities.

Pro essional linksOur sta have strong links with industry groups and partnerorganisations, which ensures the course content remains relevantto the changing needs o the workplace. These afliations also

enable students to learn rst-hand rom a variety o industry expertswho actively participate in the teaching program to discuss thecontemporary issues relevant to the Australian health care system.

Flexible learning The Master o Clinical Leadership combines o -campus study withresidential study programs and continues Deakins strong reputation oronline learning. As an o -campus student, your studies are supportedby a range o interactive teaching methods. You can take advantageo this exibility to study when, where and how you like, and t studyaround work and li estyle commitments.

In addition to exible online learning, you will undertake a numbero clinical leadership units which are o ered as intensive residentialprograms. You will also participate in action learning activities within

the workplace.Who can apply? The Master o Clinical Leadership is ideally suited to active andexperienced clinicians who are currently employed in or wishing topursue leadership and management positions within the Australianhealth care system. The course provides an opportunity to extend theknowledge acquired throughout your undergraduate health-relateddegree through study o the underlying principles common to Deakinsestablished masters programs.

Career opportunities The majority o clinicians do not undertake ormal managementand leadership training beyond their clinical training. As such, itsnot surprising that a recent study conducted by the Department

o Health in Victoria suggested that only a small minority o medically-quali ed, hospital-based clinical managers have ormalmanagement quali cations.

Clinical leadership is an increasing area o interest in the UK, USA,Canada and indeed Australia, particularly given the current challengeswithin the health care industry and the shi t in ocus towards systemimprovement. The study was initiated in 2002, when expectant mothers wererecruited through the antenatal clinic at Barwon Health, saysAssoc. Pro . Julie Pasco, lead investigator o the study and Heado the Barwon Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit.

In an early phase o the study, we showed that in ants whose mothershad low vitamin D levels during pregnancy, had sub-optimal bonegrowth.

We now have a unique opportunity to measure growth anddevelopment o these children as they turn nine.

As part o this study, we will measure body size, bone growth, muscledevelopment and adiposity in the children.

Whilst it is clear that severe vitamin D de ciency in mothers isassociated with so t bones (rickets) in their o spring, more in ormationis required about the e ects o moderately low levels o vitamin Dduring pregnancy.

    Cost-sharing with employers

Some employers provide nancial and other support, such as studyleave, or sta members who are completing study that is directlyrelated to their employment and the employers core business. At Deakin, many people are studying a postgraduate course with theiremployers help.

Study support policies bene t both the employer and the employee.

For employers, when they support relevant study programs, they canhelp attract and retain well-quali ed and experienced sta members.Be ore you approach your employer or study assistance, you shouldcheck to see whether a support policy is in place.

Try to give your employer every reason to agree to your application. It can help i you provide your employer with a written submissionoutlining the bene ts and the direct and indirect costs involved. The submission could include in ormation about:

the course you wish to study any tax-deductible aspects o the program a summary o the short and long-term bene ts that would ow to

you and your employer an estimate o the total course costs o ees, textbooks and other

materials an estimate o the time you would be required to be away rom work

in order to attend classes and exams, prepare reports and so on what assistance you are requesting or aspects such as sharing o

costs and granting o time o work.

Many employers are willing to share the course costs. They might eitherreimburse you a ter you have success ully completed the course or paya percentage o the individual unit ees at the end o each trimester.I your employer is reluctant to support your study application, consider orming an agreement to cover contingencies. For example, propose that i you withdraw rom or ail a subject or leave your jobwithin a year o nishing the course, you will o er to pay back some o the ees your employer has paid.

Your employer might be concerned about how your studies will a ectyour availability and productivity at work. In the case o o -campusstudy it is easier to complete your studies outside working hours.

In many on-campus programs, classes are held outside regularworking hours.
