In the text is now known as Hajinosato, which is very near Dmyji (a Buddhist Convent)in Fujiidera a city located in sakaPrefecture, and is rendered as such in the translation. Dmyji is the third and final scene of the second act of the Kabuki playSugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami () Sugawaras Secrets of Calligraphy. Dmyji is considered to have been thefamily temple of Sugawara no Michizane.

In May Sugawaras Dmyji is definitely appearing.

It really was in February (1930) wasnt it, that a production was staged opening withKamo Zutsumi(The Banks of the Kamo River - ActI Scene 2 of Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami) which appeared along with the beginning of the third act Kurumabiki (Pulling the

Along with and before Kurumabiki is the final scene of the end of the second act called Dmyji (Dmyji Temple Act II Scene 3).Part of the second act was the first scene called Michiyuki Kotoba no Amaikae (The Sweet Talking Candy Pedlar of Love - Act IIScene 1) which included the michiyuki travel dance of Prince Tokiyono Kimiand Princess Kariyahime. scene, to Tsukushi in Kyshwhere he was exiled) and during a break in the weather when it was more settled it was decided that hewould stay at his aunt Kakujus residence in the village of Hajinosato (a village of potters of Korean descent) under her care. It was saidthat Princess Kariyahime, who is also really Kakujus daughter, fled into exile straight away after Shj decided to adopt her so shecould live as his daughter. It was there that, in sadness, Prince Tokiyo no Kimi and Princess Kariyahime came and finally met up withShj. Eventually Prince Tokiyo who is with his attendantSakuramaru(one of a set of triplets born to a commoner each serving variousmasters; the other two Matsumaru serving Shihei, and Umemaru Kan Shj) at a temple go to the Old ImperialGoshoPalace. For

certain it came about that Princess Kariyahime, who was Kakujus daughter, and the compassionate Tat suta along with her husband, she had previously becomeSukune Taros wife, also went to the village called Hajinosato and, as it so happened, moved to where thescene of Dmyjitakes place. Its difficult to understand the significance of the Tsue Sekkan (punishment with the cane act) in Dmyji, involving Princess Kariyahime, unless one has prior background knowledge of the Kamo Zutsumi (Kamo Riverbank) and Yasui Wharfscenes. It was as a result of good fortune in February that the curious Kamo Zutsumi (Kamo Riverbank) scene appeared. As a regularpatron of Kabuki I often struggle to understand the significance of the Tsue Sekkan (punishment with the cane) act.

Thats right, its a considerable marathon.

I guess it certainly takes some time to illustrate the journey from the Tsue Sekkan (punishment with the cane) act to the morning call ofthe cockerel after that, to being reminded of Shj.

It is said that it really was true that being depressed whilst en-route that to lift his spirits Kank (Sugawara noMichizane) returned tomeet up with his dear aunt.

But little was said in February about the story of Tenjin Sama (Sugawara was deified after his death as Tenjin Sama, Lord of Heaven). Its a fact that from those aroundFujiwara no Tokihira(Shihei) that a Minister, Fujiwara no Saneoki, acting as Imperial Envoy rode out

on horseback from the Sakon Hall at the Heian Palace in the Imperial Capital Kyto to Naniwa (saka) from where he retraced hissteps seeming considerably less anxious after supervising defences and out of compassion even meeting up with Kank (Sugawara noMichizane). Kank, who was waiting for a break in the weather and a period of favourable wind before setting sail, had docked for asingle night in Kawachi no Kuni (Kawachi Province) where in Hajinosato Village his aunt had been, a meeting which wascommemorated with sorrow by Kakushin-ni (of the play Kakushin-ni). The event was of course a hidden secret though wasnt itsomething which was self-evident in Kanks writing, his poetry and literature? It was traditionally a true story. Im sure that the matter inquestion was sung about openly in such things asDmyjis ykykuNoh song. Something that was inspired and composed because

the sound of the cockerels call was like that long suffering farewell there should be weeping at such a hurried farewell but in thevillage at daybreak the birds songisnt heard. It was said that it would be nice if the birdsong recalled a lingering image of that precisetime. That's why since then in the village of Hajinosatothey dont now keep chickens.

Isnt that an interesting legend? Isnt it also interesting to be able to say with confidence that the village of Hajinosato was where theaunt had lived.

Yes, it is. The identity of Sugawara sans ancestor is Nomi no Sukunethe person who it was learnt that, in EmperorSuinins Imperialreign, substituted Haniwa clay figures (aka Dog) for junshi (people who follow their Lord into death by suicide) an evil customarypractice of the past that he reformed. As a consequence of doing such a meritorious thing he received the hereditary title of Haji and his

influence on the local territory was such that this is why the village was named Hajinosato and thats where this respectful title originallycame from. As like as not this place, an ancestral historic village, can be frequently seen in things like Kanke Bunsh (writings ofSugawara no Michizane) and it may very well be true that he wanted to stay here occasionally, dont you think.(Note: link tothe story of Nomi no Sukune and Haniwa clay figures)

It was indeed profound destiny wasnt it? That place is also called Dmyji..

Whats more it was certainly the Haji clans temple and, by the way, Prince Shtoku (Shtoku Taishi) spent a great deal of timeconstructing a Buddhist Convent there in Kawachi no Kuni (Kawachi Province).Murajiwas a dynastic hereditary title in Yashima thatwas discarded at the time of the Haji when, many years ago, it can be said as a matter of fact that the name ofHajiderachanged and itbegan to be called Dmyji. The Haji clan that were honoured with the hereditary title of Sugawara ended up being for a long time

Emperor Knin Tenns Imperial tutors. AfterwardsSugawara no Kiyokimiand Sugawara no Koreyoshiprospered as a result of theircontinued home tutoring. Michizane was the third son of Sugawara no Koreyoshi, and the fourth generation of the Sugawara familyname.

    Dmyji TenmaguHaiden (Front Shrine)

    Making clever use of tradition

The main thread of the story begins, about that old aunt it was said..

Namely that she was the younger sister of Sugawara no Michizanes father Koreyoshi and she was, at a much earlier time than that ofof Kakushin-ni

(of the play Kakushin-ni), intending to start purifying this temple. Kank (Sugawara no Michizane) was also amusinghimself vacationing at this temple, occasionally composing verses of Fushiuta(songs from the southern Yaeyama Islands). This wasduring the monksAngo retreatduring the intensive summer retreat (ikka ky jun)in the EmperorYzei Tenns year Genkei 4 (880).Then, once again, between April and July of Genkei 4 (884) he transcribed the Gobu no Daij Kymon (Five Chief Mahayana BuddhistSutras), and once again in the summer of EmperorKk Tenns year ofNinna2 (886) at this temple he was trained in and receivedthe transmission of the teaching of the contemplation of Aji (the letter A in esoteric Buddhism). Of these the facts are certain.

(Note: Sugawara no Michizane would have been 35 years old in 880, he was exiled at the age of 56 in 901)

Thats right! So isnt there a story of some conjecture that has been told that Kank (Sugawara no Michzane) returned in secret fromNaniwa (saka) to his ancestors hometown and parted with a great deal of sorrowful emotion from his dear aunt, or so it woul d seem.Isnt ita fact that even now, because of that, traces of his exile can be followed?

On the saka Railways electric train from Kansaisens Kashiwara (station on the Kansai Line) alight at DmyjiStation where DmyjiTenmangu can be found, near Nishini ch (street). Its a fact that there is an event, the ancestral worship ofAmenohohino Mikoto, which takes place at the Hashi Jinja (Shrine). After Kank passed away in Tsukushi Province the whole country was subjected tofrequent disasters and as a consequence, it was said, his vengeful spirit was dissuaded from revenge when it was expected that itwould be arranged for his kami (divine spirit) to be enshrined. Here in this shrine, which later became known as DmyjiTenmangu, itwas arranged for Michizane, his aunt and Kakushin-ni to be enshrined together and perhaps its true that, according to tradition,

arrangements were made for aShinz carved wooden image that Kank himself carved in rough wood to be placed here. The rank ofthe shrine (Note: shrine rankings were abolished in 1946) was that of a Gosha (village shrine) though in the Shiniki (shrine precincts)the Shaden (main shrine) is generally more elegant. As one would expect with Kanks profound destiny only the Omiya (Shinto Shrine)exhibits the appropriate grandiosity.

Well then dont you agree that its a fact that there are remains, of course, that relate entirely to the eternal destiny of Kank.

Assuredly. There are well known things such as traces of Haniwa (Dguclay figures) which were found in an earthen kiln that Nomino Sukune(a famous wrestler who founded Sumo and was an ancestor of Sugawara no Michizane) proposed should be substitutedinstead ofJunshi(following the Emperor into death by suicide), Kanks transcription of Gobu no Daij Kymon (Five Chief MahayanaBuddhist Sutras), and the inkstone wellGesui no i(The well that does not dry out in summer - during his stay here in 886 between Apriland July this is the well from which Sugawara no Michizane drew his water), the Tobiume (sacred Flying Plum Tree of Dazaifu inTsukushi) fromTsukushi Province,a plant did raised from a seedling called Jju Ume (The Wish Fulfilment Plum. In exile in DazaifuSugawara no Michizane lamented with a poem composed in tribute to his favourite Plum tree which magically transported itself to be byhis side). It may also be the case that the Haji no Izumi (Haji Water Well) was, in ancient times, called Hekigyoku no Ike (Jasper Pond),and in the grounds are such things asMokugenju (Golden Rain or Soapberry Tree the fruit of which is often used in Rosaries), andlarge Ich (Ginko trees). To start with, and in order, from each shrine there are Kanks favou rite things. To start with is the Chokufu(Imperial Seal) and the Yatsu no Mikagami (The Eight Hand Sacred Mirror). TheAji Kymeditation object, Suzuri inkstone, andHkenswordand so on which is the reason, to be sure, that many of the various articles are put on display in the treasure house.

So then what was called Dmyjiwas a convent..

Passing under the Rmon (two storied tower gate) which appears at the West Jinja (shrine) there is the Amadera (Buddhist Convent),a temple which was donated and which is located in small narrow grounds and which gives off an impression of purity you know! Theprinciple object of worship is the Eleven Faced Kannonsomething which was carved during the monks intensive summer meditationretreat (ikka ky junango)using the traditional itt sanraimethod. When it was begun it was a prototype ----------------- an experimentwhich is now designated, amongst other things, as one of the really preciousKokuhNational Treasures.

Those various traditions were, by no means unskilfully, woven together as part of a plan formed by Dmyjithen.

Its a fact that in the same way as it would seem Sembon Zakura (the Kabuki play Sembon Zakura - Thousand Cherry Trees) did, thathere Sugawara (the Kabuki play) also made use of all the living traditions. When Kakuju, her true parent, punishes Princess Kariyahime

with a cane (the Tsue Sekkan, punishment with a cane, scene) Lord Shj (Sugawara no Michizane), her adoptive parent, stops itwhen, with a burgeoning sense of honour, he says to her in a speech from behind a shoji paper sliding door, Your father really isyearning to meet formally and at length with Princess Kariyahime (Note: quote from theBunrakuPuppet PlayGiday Kygen narrativechant)and Kakuju and Princess Kariyahime could not but be astonished then when on opening the shoji sliding paper screen door theyfind that only his spirit had lingered for their benefit in the form of a wooden statue which, logically, had been left behind. Thosewatching were also instinctively overwhelmed by the sight they see in the scene. However, they all couldnt help but be surprised whenthe palanquin that he had boarded accompanied by a bogus escort returns and is received containing just the wooden statue.

Hangandai Terukuni (Sugawaras real Government escort), who had caught up, is persuaded that he (Shj) had left like this (i.ebecause he had been deceived into accompanying a bogus escort) when from inside a room Shjs voice is heard the logical reasonfor this was that it was the wooden statue that had accompanied the bogus escort and that each realised that Shj had returnedbecause of what he had said. Where is the complete truth Shj? The cast who were also watching were also confused about Shjand end up being puzzled.

For sure, and wasnt there a plan cleverly formulated involving birdsong?

That seems about right. The meaning from the song is that the sound of the Cockerels call was said to be detestable. This was Shiheimoving towards his endgame which, as one of the many intentions given in the dramatization, he executes by forcingSukune Tarandhis father Haji no Hye to implement their evil secret plan using the cockerel and its morning call, a plan which is unfortunatelyoverheard by someone who they perhaps bind, murder and throw in a pond. The cockerel is placed on the lid on top of a Hasami-bako(scissored hamper aka travelling clothes chest) which is floating in the pond. The result of their handiwork is a body floating on thesurface of the pond along with the cockerel, aTtenk(Long Tailed Long Crower), which is raising a ruckus with its reputedly long andcomplicated nuisance call. If anything is generally known about Sugawara its that the Terakoya Scene (temple elementary school - anact from the play Sugawara Denju Tenarai KagamiSugawaras Secrets of Calligraphy), as it is called, is fictitious. It can be saidconfidently that DmyjiTemplesstanding here is that it alone embodies humanitys affection and exists so that the compassion of

enlightenment can be learnt, grasped and understood.

Finally, it was good to hear about this honourable temples past though in its present existence its still somewhat small isnt it?

In the year Meiji (1868) Shinbutsubunri (separation of Shint and Buddhism) was brought in and its a fact that it has changed. Untilthat time it was the grounds of a Shinto Shrine and that of a temple. There are even now at this place traces of a pagoda and othersuch things. Afterwards if I might say so, Dmyji reminds me straight away of boiled rice (Dmyji hoshi is dried boiled rice fromDmyjiTemple), something which certainly originates from the shrines and temples here and which they now supply to the Army andNavy.
