NWO-FAPESP Joint Workshop: Research on Sports and Healthy Living
March 22-23 2016, São Paulo, Brazil.
NWO-FAPESP Joint Workshoppg 3 São Paulo, Brazil March 22-23, 2016
In the talk I discuss virtual assessment in sport
by proposing a statistical expert system for
analyzing sport data in real time as a powerful
tool for talent identification (focus on soccer).
The so called iSports, which allows for
monitoring and continuous comparison of
athletes in a simple and efficient way.

iSports – Football Module
It is a detection tool for Sport Talents
The tool enables comparisons among athletes.
Such comparisons are made in real time,
allowing to compare and sort the athletes
according to their abilities, especially
highlighting the possible talents.
NWO-FAPESP Joint Workshoppg 31 São Paulo, Brazil March 22-23, 2016
INSPIRATION
The detection of sport talents:
It is extremely subjective (usually
based on perceptions of scouts and
coaches).
It may demand a long time.
As consequence, various possible
talents may not be discovered.
MOTIVATION
NWO-FAPESP Joint Workshoppg 32 São Paulo, Brazil March 22-23, 2016
INSPIRATION
Neymar, now on the Spanish
club Barcelona, began his
career at age of 6 (1998).
He was transferred to the base
category of Santos soccer
team at 11 years old (2003).
At least 5 years to be discovered as a possible
talent!
MOTIVATION
He was transferred to the Santos principal team at 17
years old (2009).
NWO-FAPESP Joint Workshoppg 33 São Paulo, Brazil March 22-23, 2016
INSPIRATION
Didier Drogba signed his first pro contract
when he was 21. He had never attended a
football academy and only began daily
football training as a fully grown adult.
Footballers that Made It Late
Miroslav Klose, a brick-layer before starting
football at 5th division of Germany, only
demonstrated his talent on the world stage at
the World Cup 2002, where he claimed the
Golden Boot.
Javi Varas arrived at Sevilla FC aged 23, after
having only played amateur football
in Andalusia, Spain.

INSPIRATION
On August 2015, Marcelo
Rocha, a 43 year old postman,
from Adamantina (SP), win the
Third Edition of the Mizuno
Uphill Marathon, at Santa
Catarina State, Brazil”.
He has left behind various of the
best known international
competitors.
If he had been discovered in a young age,
certainly would be a potential to go further.
