Unlocking the Future...

NEWS

Those are the mechanics. But as descriptive as this seems, it does not even scratch the surface of the power of the PFEW experience. Everyone who participates in PFEW leaves energized, leaves better, leaves changed.

“As a donor, a volunteer, a mother of a recent graduate, and a passionate fan of the

program, I can simply say that PFEW is one of the best opportunities that can be given to a rising high school Junior or Senior in the state of Pennsylvania. It is so much more than a business camp, but instead, and as quoted to me by many a student, a life changing experience.” – Ms. Katie E. Clarke, President, LeTort Trust, Cumberland County

A big part of the students’ learning experience during our five week-long sessions is the exciting competition. Once again this year, we had 120 teams vying for the top spot in each of the four categories that determine Top Company, and additional grueling competition on the volleyball courts of Lycoming College! While unquestionably every young man or woman who attends PFEW is a winner, here are the teams (and their Company Advisors) who did just a little better than their competitors each week.

Management SkillThroughout the week each company is engaged in a computer simulation where they make twelve quarterly decisions requiring them to determine production levels, selling price, and expenditures on marketing, product development, market research, quality management, and banking. Based on these decisions, the simulation evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the decisions on a 0-100 scale. These companies earned the highest cumulative score for their three years of operations:

The Raymond G. Weber award is rarely given at PFEW, and it is the only individual student award ever presented. It is named after one of the founders of PFEW whose passion and vision made PFEW what it is today. It is reserved only for those rare students who rise above extraordinary challenges, who exhibit remarkable courage when faced with adversity, who make a profound impact on their teammates and all those around them. This year, Karen was proud to present the Raymond G. Weber award to Mr. Joel Cruz from MMI Prep in Luzerne County. Joel was nominated by his Company Advisor, Kateryna Brezitska, who said, “Joel’s strength was one of the most inspiring things I have ever seen.” Congratulations Joel, you are one very special young man.

A Special Young Man

And the winners are... ALL OF US!

Each year we honor these very special men and women who go the extra mile by serving in this very special role. This year, we recognize nine Advisors who have selflessly given three years of their time and talent to help young people understand and celebrate free enterprise. We present them with the “President’s Fifteen-Year Service Award”, including the President’s Citation from the Foundation’s Board of Directors along with a diamond studded gold lapel pin in recognition of their extraordinary commitment to the youth of Pennsylvania.

Recent Travels

John and Karen were pleased to visit the offices of perennial President’s Club member Career C o n c e p t s S t a f f i n g Services, Inc. in Erie. Shown here receiving his appreciation plaque is Marc Turner, President (center). Thanks, Marc!

As you probably know, “Erie Gives” is unquestionably the single most important fundraising day of the year for PFEW. We’re excited to report that because of our incredibly generous supporters from all across Pennsylvania, PFEW once again placed first out of a record 376 participating non-profit organizations! On August 8th, the day of this year’s event, we received a record $345,648 in donations in the twelve-hour day of giving hosted annually by the Erie Community Foundation (ECF). Because of this amazing support, we received an additional $15,502 in matching gifts provided by ECF and Erie area corporations, resulting in a record grand total of $361,150. All monies received this day go directly toward scholarships for students attending the 2017 and 2018 programs.

Since the first Erie Gives was held in 2011, PFEW has received an astonishing $1,521,759 in gifts and an additional $82,244 in matching gifts for a grand total of $1,604, 004. This means that because of your generosity on this one day, a total of 2,790 students have been able to experience the wonder of PFEW and be better prepared for our future! We extend a very heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who participate in this incredible day. We are humbled by your belief in this mission and your support of young people in our state. Again, thank you!!

Erie Gives 2017 Shatters Records – Another HUGE Success for PFEW!

On Friday, August 25, Karen and Scott were privileged to attend the 2017 Erie Gives check presentation ceremony at the Erie Zoo. A record $4.4 million was raised in one day for local non-profits. Pictured here, left to right, are Ms. Deborah W. Murphy, Sr. Vice President – Wealth Management, UBS Financial Services, Karen, Scott, and Mr. Michael L. Batchelor, President, The Erie Community Foundation.

Heartfelt Thanks!

As we prepare for each year’s program and the upcoming fundra is ing year, we pr in t thousands of Program Brochures to market PFEW. Our print deadline is early June, and inevitably we receive generous gifts after our print deadline has expired. “Not only did I have the chance to get an insight into the business world but to grow as a person as well. I got to see more potential in myself from spending a week at this program then one year of high school ever could. I also learned how to carry myself as a businesswoman throughout my career and the rest of my life.” – Karen Mancilla, Bishop Shanahan HS

These are but a very few of the hundreds of powerful testimonials we received from students, parents, donors, advisors, speakers, and everyone involved in making this program a truly life-altering experience. Yes, PFEW is about teaching our young people to understand and celebrate free enterprise. Consider the following results from this year’s student surveys: 97.7% of students said that because they attended PFEW they had a better understanding of the American free enterprise system and their role in it. 98.2% said that what they learned at PFEW would benefit them in their personal lives. 96.5% said that PFEW improved their perception of business. And 98.9% of our students said their sponsor’s money was well invested. These statistics prove that PFEW is having a dramatic impact on attitudes,

perception, knowledge, and passion for business in Pennsylvania. But we hope you can begin to see that PFEW is so much more than mere statistics, that the real value lies in the shared experience, in the relationships that are forged, in the teamwork, the failures and successes, and in the realization that these young people are now much better prepared to be the leaders of tomorrow. An investment in PFEW is indeed an investment in our very future.

This year, we welcomed new speakers, new Company Advisors, new supporters, and 2,108 new members of the PFEW family. We witnessed exciting competition, laughter and tears, failure and success, resilience, perseverance, tenacity, and abounding spirit and energy. We also celebrated with President and CEO John Trombetta as he capped his incredible 29-year career by emceeing his astonishing 116th emotional closing banquet. Yes, it was a record-breaking summer, a summer we will never forget.

As we embark on our 40th year of this amazing “thing” we call Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week, we look back fondly on this extraordinary year, and we extend our most sincere thank you to the thousands of partnering organizations, donors, supporters, volunteers, school contacts, and everyone dedicated to making this the premier, award-winning high school business educational experience in the world. Know that we are committed to making the 2018 program even bigger and better than before. Thank you!!
