WWII and Migration to US…

• Eric’s father Fritz was a medic and was a POW and detained in a campPOW and detained in a camp

• After the WWII ended, Eric, his mother (Emma) and sister (Ruth) found themselves behind enemy lines in Poland

• They escaped to Bavaria to join their father

• Fritz and Eric convinced the family to migrate to U.S.,  in 1952 and settled in St. Louis, MO

Eric as a Teen…

• Was unable to speak fluent E li hEnglish

• Was advised by the high school career counselor that he is most suited to work in a garage… repairing automobilesp g

• Went to Wash U for his undergrad

• Graduated in three years in 1956

Dr. Ewald Busse

With a grant from the National Institutes of Health in 1957, Dr. Busse established the Center for Aging and expanded his research. His program,Aging and expanded his research. His program, known as the Duke Longitudinal Study, eventually involved 800 older adults who submitted to rigorous medical and psychological examinations over 25 years. His findings increased understanding of the physical, mental, social and economic aspects of aging
