Certain old wines should not be decanted because they would be completely oxidized by aeration. These fragile, delicate wines must be served using a wine pourer basket. By holding the bottle in a semi-horizontal position, the pourer basket separates the wine from its sediment as it is brought up from the cellar and avoids sudden agitation of the wine when serving.

A younger wine will expand until it is mature and release aromas thanks to the oxygenation of some of its compounds. Therefore, the ideal decanter for a young wine is wide-based or has a horizontal shape (known as “Canard” – duck shaped), to favour the mingling of wine with the air.

Over time, a fine film of tannin is deposited on the walls and stains them. To correct this and restore the decanter to its full radiance, fill decanter with warm water and gentle roll Bilbo cleaning beads into the decanter. Swirl for a few minutes. Gently pour off the water through Bilbo holder.
