From emotional, heart-tugging stories to cute blind date ads – when it comes to finding adopters for our homeless animals, anything goes! We’ll admit that we’ve certainly come up with some pretty wild ideas to entice potential adopters to check us out, and we won’t be afraid to use a few more if we need to!

But then it dawned on us. Animals aren’t meant to be looked at through a cage door or read about on a

website – in order for their wonderful personalities to truly shine through, they need to get up close and personal with people! So, we’re getting our residents out of their kennels and offering up a menu of interactive animal-centered events with the goal of finding them their forever homes. Yep, you got it…we’re literally thinking outside the cage!

2 We’re celebrating Black Tie & Tails this year by honoring Mutts artist Patrick McDonnell and his wife Karen O’Connell. Keep an eye out throughout this issue for his quirky characters!

Ain’t Too Proud to Beg!continued from front

Dog lovers should be sure to keep an eye on our events calendar for our next “Mutt Mob”… a flash mob with a canine twist! During a “mob,” shelter staff and volunteers descend on a chosen location (downtown Pittsburgh or another local community) with nearly every dog in our adoption kennel in tow.

En masse, these canines will be able to meet, greet, wag, slobber and lick their way into the hearts of the public.

You’ll find that our feline events are truly the cat’s meow! We’re combining delicious coffee and free-roaming felines for our “Cat Cafés” that will allow you to enjoy a cup o’ joe while meeting our adoptable cats and kittens. And for the kids (or kids at heart), we’re hosting the “Cat’s Pajamas Party.” Everyone is invited to join us – in their pjs – for playtime as our kittens scamper and frolic all around. After everyone is all tuckered out, we’ll settle in our beanbag chairs for a bedtime story and cuddling. Does it get any better than that?

Perhaps it does, because we haven’t even talked about the bunnies yet! Our “Bun Runs,” which happen most Saturday afternoons, are a great time to meet our adoptable rabbits as they kick up their heels in our outreach center.

Whether you just want to meet the bunnies up close and personal or learn more about bringing one into your home, the “Bun Runs” are a great activity for the entire family.

So plan to join us for one of our many fur-filled, family-focused events and get to know our great residents here at Animal Friends. Check out our website, www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org, or visit us on Facebook for more information. We aren’t too proud to beg…but we know you won’t make us!

Another

Tool in Our Community’s Tool BeltsOne of the most stressful experiences that we as pet owners can face is the uncertainty and worry that comes when a pet is missing. Even more heart wrenching is the fact that of the estimated 5-7 million animals that enter our country’s shelters and animal control facilities, only 10% - 30% of dogs and less than 5% of cats are reclaimed by their owners.

Animal Friends, along with Allegheny County District Attorney Steven A. Zappala, Jr. and Allegheny County Treasurer John K. Weinstein, in partnership with Fragasso Financial Advisors and the Allegheny County Abused Animal Relief Fund (AAARF), is proud to participate in an initiative that will reunite lost pets with their owners by putting free microchip scanners

in the hands of every municipal police department in Allegheny County. This unique public-private partnership kicked off in early July when Animal Friends hosted a press conference announcing the project and distributed the first scanners to thankful police chiefs from more than 40 municipal police departments.

Shelters and animal control facilities routinely scan incoming dogs and cats; those with microchips can be quickly identified and returned to their owners. Without operable scanners, police officers are at a disadvantage when they find a lost or stray pet, and must simply wait for the owner to call the station to report a missing pet. If the owner doesn’t call, the pet is transferred to a shelter or animal control agency, often located miles outside of the municipality. Shelters and animal control agencies are required by law to hold an unlicensed pet for only 48 hours before euthanizing or placing the pet up for adoption. With a scanner within the municipal police department, owners can be identified quickly, which means a better chance of reunification with

their pets and less of a burden on the region’s already overwhelmed shelters.

The cost of the project was underwritten by the AAARF fund and Allegheny County’s Criminal Forfeiture Program, which means that no tax dollars were used to fund this life-saving project. The way we see it, this project is a win-win-win for police officers, frantic owners and, of course, lost pets.

Spay it forward

By Kristina Hout, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Community LiaisonPittsburgh’s shelters and rescues are currently overflowing with adoptable pets awaiting their forever homes. These organizations—including Animal Friends—are working around the clock to find homes for the pets in their care.

What if we could stem the tide of pets entering shelters by providing pet owners with the vital resources they need to keep the animals they love?

This is where Pets for Life comes in. In January 2014, Animal Friends partnered with the Humane Society of the United States to launch the Pittsburgh satellite of the nationally-acclaimed Pets for Life program. This program targets underserved neighborhoods by providing free, quality spay/neuter surgeries, pet supplies and basic veterinary services to empower pet owners to keep their pets in a loving home.

Based on a community assessment, Homewood was selected as our first Pets for Life target neighborhood. Our

first community outreach event on May 3 was at the Galaxy Lounge and Entertainment Center. We were able to vaccinate 187 pets against rabies, distemper and schedule them for spaying/neutering and microchipping appointments, all free of charge.

The ramifications of this program have been wonderful. Winnie, the owner of a 4-year-old cat named Callie, knew that Callie wasn’t well but couldn’t afford to take her to a vet. Callie was spayed through the Pets for Life program and during her surgery, our veterinarian removed a two-pound pyometra (infected uterus) from Callie’s tiny seven-pound frame. Callie’s life was truly saved by Winnie and the Pets for Life program.

Our work in the Homewood area will continue with another community outreach event this fall.

If you’re interested in working with Animal Friends’ Pets for Life program, please contact Kristina Hout, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Community Liaison, at 412-847-7087 or at [email protected].

HoneyBee

Cedar is a sleek and bright cat with silky black fur and glowing yellow eyes that will capture your heart. He’s strong, vibrant and full of life. He’s almost 2 years old and very confident for his age. He will make a great play buddy and will impress with his dashing good looks. Come meet him today!

Cedar would like to thank Jan Matusz for her sponsorship!

Mr. Whiskers is a shy but strikingly handsome black smoke Tabby cat who loves to snuggle and will make the perfect lap warmer. He spends most of his time here at the shelter hiding in his pillow case (as you can see from the above photo). We like to think he’s saying, “Animal Friends is a great place but I would really love a home of my own.” Can you open your home (and pillowcases) to this sweet boy?

This striking young lady is a 3-year-old Calico who loves other cats and people. Her sweet personality and affectionate demeanor are matched by her good looks. She’s a master player with toy mice and loves a good chin rub and cat naps. She’s FIV+, which is no big deal. She just needs to be an only cat, or live with other FIV+ cats.

Buzz on over to learn more about our sweet Honeybee.

Honeybee knows that Carol Lofgren, who gave in honor of all homeless animals, is a “purr”fect person!

Frisky is a handsome, fluffy gray-and-white cat with emerald eyes. He’s shy at first, but his warm and easygoing personality will quickly shine through. Frisky is friendly with children, but would prefer a calm household to call his own. He’s 8 years old and a member of our distinguished Red Collar Society, which makes him extra special!

Frisky would like to send thankful meows to Mr and Mrs. Robert Cosharek for their sponsorship in honor of Charlie!

FRiskY

If Animal Friends were a certain primetime TV show that featured handsome doctors, then Kingsley would be McDreamy. He’s sleek, charming and devilishly handsome. You can’t resist his determined golden eyes when it’s play time, which is all the time for this young cat. Kingsley also happens to be declawed. If you’re looking for an energetic addition to your family, then Kingsley is definitely your man.

Kingsley sends a dreamy thank you to Patricia

Wiloughby for her sponsorship!

DaKotaDakota is the coolest cat you will ever meet, and we’re not sure why he’s been at the shelter for so long! This moustached cat is cuddly, playful, smart and just an all-around great guy. We often take him into our office for a cage break and he brings smiles and joy to everyone he meets. Come check this handsome guy out!

Dakota thanks Richard and Kathy Bedford and Simon the Tabby cat for their kind sponsorship. Meows and purrs to you!

This guy takes fun, affection and smarts to a whole new level. If you take him home, we’re sure you will have a constant smile on your face. We can all learn a little from Jax, whose main goal is to enjoy life, rub faces and make everyone laugh. He’s a goofball who doesn’t take anything seriously except being your best friend!

Thanks to Joyce Waltner-Barmak, who gave in honor of Dr. Charles and Mrs. Else Waltner.

In Greek mythology, Athena is the goddess of wisdom and courage. Our Athena was rescued by our Humane Investigations Department because of neglect. She was sick and timid, but she channeled her inner Greek goddess and is now a wonderful cat full of affection, head-butts and happiness. In other words, she’s ready for her forever home.

Athena, in all her wisdom, knows that Mr. and Mrs. William Young are wonderful people for sponsoring her in memory of Snookie! Thank you!

This lovely lady came to us during our last New Year’s Eve Rescue when all of the animals were named after Dr. Seuss characters (which explains her unique name). She’s 6 years old and is very mellow and has the most soothing purr. She’ll be your best friend when you pet her and discuss Dr. Seuss conundrums, such as – “Do pineapples grow on pine or apple trees?” Come say hello to her today!

Zozzfozzel thanks Barbara Errett, who gave in memory of her pets.

Samson is the clown of our cat condos. This silly fellow often jumps and runs around our socializing room hunting for toys. And when he captures his prey, he’ll haul it off to a quiet corner to play with. His vibrant and slightly quirky personality will brighten any home. He’d be happy to relax on your lap and cuddle like a teddy bear after an exciting play session.

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Kochka for their sponsorship!

5At Animal Friends, dogs ages 5 and over, cats ages 6 and over, and bunnies older than 5 years are Red Collar Society pets. Their adoptions come with special benefits!

Are you looking for highly-skilled workers who are enthusiastic, eco-friendly, inexpensive and downright cute? Why not consider a barn cat, or as they’re sometimes called, a “working cat?” Animal Friends is seeking committed adopters for some very special working cats. Animal Friends will work with the adopters of these cats to ensure a successful transition into their new environment. The cats will be spayed or neutered and be current on vaccinations before leaving Animal Friends. If you can help one of these very special cats, please call Animal Friends at 412.847.7002 or complete our on-line interest survey at www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org/WorkingCats.

Emmie is a very sweet girl. She also has a bit of a sweet tooth and because of that, has put on some weight in a previous home. She’ll need to go to someone who has the time and know-how to help her get to a healthy weight so she can enjoy running and playing again, as a bunny should! Emmie would love to meet you, so why don’t you come down and see her today?

Homeless Hoppers

What our friend Walter lacks in color, he makes up for in personality! Walter is a confident, loving bunny who loves to meet new people and say hello! Walter loves being petted and would like to spend some time with you on the floor, playing with toys and just relaxing. Walter is an easy-going guy and would make a great rabbit for someone who has never owned one before.

By Megan Schmitt, Admissions and Foster Care CoordinatorThey all need a home.

We know that all of the animals that currently call Animal Friends home (as well as those in foster care and those at our satellite adoption centers), are looking for their forever homes – but why did they end up at Animal Friends? Where do our animals come from?

The animals that come through the doors of the Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center are here because of a variety of circumstances. They’ve been surrendered by their owners, found as strays, removed from cruel situations, transferred from other organizations or returned after being adopted from Animal Friends. Our Admissions Department receives

an overwhelming number of requests for placements with us, and because we don’t euthanize for space, we’re only able to admit new animals when our current residents find loving homes.

Why do owners surrender their pets? We receive requests from owners to surrender their pets for many reasons. Often, owners seek placement for their pets because they feel that they can no longer provide the care or compassion required to keep the animals happy and healthy in their homes. Our Admissions Department works closely with these families and to find the best options for placement for their pets and to admit them to the shelter when space allows. The demand for admissions is incredible but we do the best we can to help each and every animal that comes to us in need.

What does it mean when pets are “returned”? When pets are admitted to Animal Friends, they become Animal Friends animals for life. This means that we’ll welcome them back to the shelter for any reason, at any time. If an adopter can

no longer care for an Animal Friends pet, the adopter is encouraged to contact us to make arrangements to return the pet to return to us.

What does it mean when pets are seized by Animal Friends’ Humane Investigations Department? A large number of animals available for adoption at Animal Friends have been rescued by our Humane Investigations Department from circumstances involving cruelty or neglect. Chief Humane Officers Kathy Hecker and Humane Office Rob Fredley work every day to remove animals from dangerous situations and to grant them safe haven here, ultimately giving them a chance at a life with a loving family.

There are also a number of Animal Friends residents that have been transferred from other animal rescue organizations. Our Admissions Department receives a large number of requests from shelters in surrounding regions for placement of their animals in our shelter. We work side-by-side with organizations such as the Greene County Humane Society, Orphans of the

Storm, Butler County Humane Society, Four Footed Friends, Indiana County Humane Society and many more.

Additionally, when local animal control facilities such as Ferree Kennels and Secreet Animal Control pick up stray pets that aren’t claimed by their owners, they reach out to us for assistance with placing them into new homes.

There is a lot of demand to place animals within the Animal Friends system. We do our very best to manage this demand and admit animals as we are able or provide other resources and support while they wait for space to open.

The animals that look to us for admission come from a variety of sources, but in the end they are all the same—they’re homeless pets searching for their forever families. So please know, that when you adopt from Animal Friends, you’re really saving two lives: the life of the pet that you welcome into your home and the life of the pet that is able to take its place in our shelter.

JosiE

This 6-year-old Rottweiler mix loves people! She’s anxious to please and will always “sit pretty” for a treat. She needs moderate exercise and probably should be an only dog. She wants to be the center of attention—and this lovely lady deserves it!

Kya thanks Kim and Wilma Guseman for their generous sponsorship! Thank you!

Sparty is a volunteer and staff favorite. This 10-year-old Australian Cattle Dog/Pointer mix needs a kind, understanding home. He’s blind and is beginning to lose his hearing. He enjoys short walks, or just lounging around in the grass. Sometimes our volunteers sit in his kennel and read him stories. He’s a very special dog looking for that very special person.

Sparty sends lots of love to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Robie, who sponsored him in memory of their Beardie, Bently.

This 5-year-old Boxer/German Shepherd mix has never had a bad day. Every morning she wakes with a wiggle and smile. She loves treats and toys, and seems to get along with other dogs. Josie loves to play and go for walks, but equally enjoys a nice snuggle on the couch, or lounging next to you on the floor.

Live life to the fullest, no matter what setbacks you may

have. That’s how our three-legged Ladybug sees things. But

you’ll hardly notice her physical challenge—she keeps up with

most dogs during free roam runs in our play yards. She

fetches a ball, wiggles with excitement, and always

has a silly grin on her adorable

white-and-pink face.

How can you resist that underbite? Wally is a 10-year-old Lhasa Apso with distinguished white fur. He’s mellow, but still enjoys a lively walk. We recently took him downtown for a “Mutt Mob” and he was a hit with the ladies. He’s in his golden years, but still has plenty of love to give.

Wally would love to go on a walk with his sponsor, Madeline Gigliotti, who gave in honor of Ginger.

Our Dolly is a real doll! This smiling, happy German Shepherd mix would make a wonderful family dog. Dolly would love to curl up with you on the couch or take a leisurely walk through the park. Right now, she knows “sit” and “down,” but is sure to learn many more tricks under your careful watch! Please come and visit Dolly today. She is waiting for her perfect match!

Otis is something of a celebrity here at Animal Friends. Just about every morning you can see a volunteer walking this 95-pound Bloodhound mix who has a rather unique swagger in his step. And he’ll try to greet you as you get out of your car with his oversized floppy ears, wrinkly face and lovable smile. He’s truly nothin’ but a hound dawg!

Otis says “Thanks!” to Mr. and Mrs. John Daley, who gave in memory of Toby Daley.

This handsome guy is a “people” dog—he loves humans more than his own kind. He can hardly contain his enthusiasm when he first meets someone—he greets everyone with a wiggly butt, sloppy licks and kisses. He enjoys long walks and willingly sits and ‘gives paw’ in exchange for a pat on the head. Stu’s manners are just about impeccable!

Stu thanks Mary Ann Grechen for her sponsorship in memory of Sophia.

Are you afraid of thunder and other loud noises? Unfortunately, so is Zack. He could use a good friend to cuddle up with until the storm passes. And you’ll be in the very best company. Zack is a kind, sweet-hearted gentleman with soft brown eyes and a white muzzle that will melt your heart. And you should see the tricks he can do—sit, give paw, other paw—he’s a smart boy and a staff favorite!

Zack would love to cuddle up with Mr. and Mrs. Edward Littell for their generous sponsorship in memory of Chris Nail (survived by Beagle “Howard”).

This 3-year-old Pit Bull/Terrier mix is a bundle of energy. She’d be perfect for a very active family who can give her plenty of exercise, and she’d definitely make an excellent workout partner who will make sure you never skip your workout! Her new family will have to teach her a few manners, but we are happy to help make this match a forever one.

Cleo thanks Richard Perin, who sponsored her in honor of Basil Perin Sr.

“woof!!”

DariusDarius is one of the friendliest dogs you’ll ever come across. He feels it’s his duty to kiss everyone he meets, and his big goofy smile is enough to light up the darkest days. This 6-year-old Pit Bull terrier is active and strong, so a family with children aged 16 and over is recommended. Help us spread the word about this great dog!

Darius gives licks and kisses to Audrey Amthor, who sponsored him in memory of Domino.

unhappy cat learns how to play and how to

make friends. Now that she’s a happy cat will

she find a forever family?

The Happy Tale of Two Cats is an excellent story

that illustrates responsible cat ownership to

young readers. A great book for any cat lovers,

whether you have a cat or not!

‘The Trouble with Dogs…’ Said Dad by Bob Graham Kate and her parents just adopted two dogs

from the shelter (Read ’Let’s get a Pup!’ Said

Kate for that wonderful story). Their new

puppy, Dave, is a bit rambunctious. The family

calls a local trainer, but when “The Brigadier”

shouts at Dave, and tells the family to use a

chain collar on him, Kate and her parents have

second thoughts.

This book is a great story about being polite to

dogs and people. Young readers might need

help with some of the larger words, but the

message is accessible to all ages. Dave, Kate,

and their family really love their animals! Color me!

Happy Tails

Happy Tail: Violet By Connor RobinetteMy name is Connor Robinette. I am 14 years old and I am Violet’s new owner. We originally saw Violet in the Animal Friends appeal “270 Days of Compassion”. When my mom suggested we go meet her, I was a bit hesitant. I had just lost my dog Maya and was still very sad. Even

though I was hesitant, I agreed to go meet Violet with my mom at Animal Friends. Once I met her I knew we had to adopt her.

Another reason why we wanted her was that she was very sick the first year of her life. We wanted to give her the best life possible moving forward. We adopted my other dog Bruno from Animal Friends 10 years ago who was sickly just like her. He is still going strong at 15! Violet and Bruno love each other so much.

I am so lucky to have Violet. We spend so much time together. We swim every day. She loves to ride piggy back in the pool, float on the raft together and she jumps off the side after me. She loves to sit on my lap when I read to her. We also love to watch television together.

Violet makes me so happy and I feel so loved. She follows me everywhere and I feel like the most important person in the world to her. My family is so lucky to have Violet as she brought so much joy into our lives.

Everyone at Animal Friends is just so touched by the incredible bond that has grown between Connor and Violet. When Violet started her journey with us here at Animal Friends as a very sick puppy, we weren’t sure she was going to survive. Over 270 days of excruciating treatments balanced with gentle care and enrichment by our staff and volunteers, she made

it. To know that she is living large with Connor and his family is the richest gift we could have received. And, we are sure Violet would agree.
