PETRONAS is an experienced, reputable and fully integrated Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) operator in Malaysia and abroad. We embarked on an ambitious floating LNG facility development to monetise stranded gas fields.

Operated by PETRONAS Floating LNG 1 (L) Ltd, the development of PETRONAS’ first floating LNG facility, PFLNG Satu (PFLNG1), began in 2010 and is scheduled for start-up in 2016 at the Kanowit gas field, offshore Bintulu, Sarawak. The floating facility fits an LNG processing train including all its utilities and support units, which traditionally are spread across an area of approximately 2.5km2, onto one compact 360m long and 40m wide structure.

A giant leap in innovation for the LNG industry, PFLNG is expected to boost Malaysia’s total LNG production capacity to 32 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and forever change the landscape of the world’s LNG industry.

As the days of big discoveries are diminishing globally, technology solutions such as Floating LNG (FLNG) will open up new opportunities to monetise stranded gas fields, which previously had zero economic value if remain untapped.

PETRONAS Floating LNG is an integrated LNG floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit. It is stationed offshore at a gas field to extract natural gas from the wellhead which is then processed into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and stored in its containment system and is offloaded directly into LNG carriers offshore.

The production onboard PFLNG will allow for direct shipping to markets - a feasible solution for early monetisation and more agile LNG production.

MotionNumerous real-time simulation and motion studies were conducted to understand the effects of waves, winds and sea currents on the processing facility’s safety, integrity, reliability and operability.

In line with international standards and best practices, we employ stringent HSE management practices at every level of our business activities to safeguard our people, environment, assets and reputation.

PFLNG has a smaller environmental footprint, about one third of a typical onshore LNG plant. On top of the standard safety measures implemented onboard, the layout is designed in such a way that most hazardous units are situated furthest away from accommodation unit. Safety is an utmost priority to us.

Operating offshore, PETRONAS paid special attention to the installation of necessary safety features to ensure the safety of some 150 staff onboard the PFLNG.
