Petroleum engineers find and develop new ways to extract petroleum in a profitable way

Find others ways to inject water, steam, or gas to extract more oil from an oil reserve

Develop plans to drill into oil and gas fields

Make sure that wells, well testing, and well surveys are completed

Make sure that oil drilling equipment are properly maintained and equipped

Required Training

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or petroleum engineering is required

A Bachelor’s in mechanical or chemical may also suffice

Also needed is work experience which can be accomplished via cooperative engineering programs

Typical Wages

As of May 2012, the annual wages for a petroleum engineer would be $130,280

Depending on your placement, there is a different salary paid

The price of oil will also vary as it will cause complications for an oil business’ operations. If oil prices were to go higher, there would be a call for more engineers to drill in more unlikely areas
