The Unbearable Lightness of Being

In this latest collection of work I examine the fragility of the human condition. Simple shapes of nude models are set against stark studio backgrounds bringing to mind mankind’s time-old quest to achieve immortality through sculpture. However in these works the sculptural human form - traditionally carved from marble or stone - is shown to be fragile and impermanent.

In the work titled The Unbearable Lightness of Being the nude figure of a woman lies across ancient stone vessels, her smooth skin pressed against their rough, weathered sides. The vessels have already survived centuries and the solid shapes they were cast in will endure whereas the woman’s body will change as she ages, then decay after her death.

Similarly in the Copper and Brass series of works I explore how metal jewellery and objects can retain the same lustre and appearance as when they were first made. In contrast their past owners have melted into history. New wrists that wear the bracelets and hands that pour the jugs will also fade and be replaced. Only the objects will remain present and unchanged.

Ancient myths and symbols play an important part in this body of work - Persephone appears as two sheaves of wheat and Minerva as an owl, the sinuous bodies of snakes suggest fertility, healing and rebirth.

I am fascinated by how the immediacy of symbols and the longevity of myths are intertwined. In an instant a symbol can convey stories that have been retold for millennia.

Generations have heard the myth of Persephone emerging in the Spring to return back into the earth after harvest time. In the work Harvest rough, coarse wheat stalks contrast with the smooth, supple body of the nude. Year after year crops are re-sown, germinate, grow and are gathered in but the woman pictured has a set lifespan that will expire and cannot be renewed.
