Parochial Vicar’s Perspective As we continue to reflect on the life of virtue, which according to the Catechism is the “habitual and firm disposition to do the good” (CCC 1803), the question I want to answer is: What motivates us to live a virtuous life? We are inspired to live virtuously because Jesus, especially in the Sermon on the Mount, (Matthew 5-7), calls us to virtuous living. Here Jesus lays out for us clearly habitual and firm dispositions to do the good. In my perspectives I will be reflecting on the Sermon on the Mount so as to better understand the Lord’s teaching in these chapters. The overarching theme of the Sermon is expressed in the last verse of chapter 5: There Jesus says: “Therefore you must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect”. Now the key to understanding this verse is contained in the phrase “must be perfect”. The Lord is clear that growth in goodness is a non- negotiable. This word “perfect” in Greek is the word “telios” from where we get the English word telescope. What does a telescope do? It allows us to get the long view, to see the distant horizon. When we choose to grow in virtue we have the horizon of heaven before us. This inspires us to habitually and firmly grow in virtue. St John Paul II wrote at the beginning of the 21 st century these words: ‘All the Christian faithful, of whatever state or rank, are called to the fullness of the Christian life and to the perfection of charity. To ask catechumens: “Do you wish to receive Baptism?” means at the same time to ask them: “Do you wish to become holy?” It means to set before them the radical nature of the Sermon on the Mount: “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect” . The time has come to repropose wholeheartedly to everyone this high standard of ordinary Christian living: the whole life of the Christian community and of Christian families must lead in this direction.’ (Novo Millennio Ineunte,30-31) The 21 st century Church is one where we are called to radical discipleship so as to become people whose lives are focused on the horizon of heaven. Only with this long view will we be inspired to grow daily in virtue. Father Jonathan

ALTAR SERVERS TRAINING

St Peter’s Parish would like to invite anyone who has

received their First Communion to become Altar Servers

to assist at the table of Our Lord’s Sacrifice. We hope you

encourage and allow to them to join in this service. It will

take their time and your commitment. It will be a beautiful

way for your children to express their active participation

in the life of the Church and learn how to become

responsible at their level. We currently are in need of

Altar Servers for the 8am and 11:30 am Masses on

Sundays. The training will be held at St. Peter’s on

Saturday, October 22 from 10am to 12 noon. Snacks

will be provided for all the attendants. Please contact

information.

Parochial Vicar’s Perspective

As we continue to reflect on the life of virtue, which according to the Catechism is the “habitual and firm disposition to do the good” (CCC 1803), the question I want to answer is: What motivates us to live a virtuous life? We are inspired to live virtuously because Jesus, especially in the Sermon on the Mount, (Matthew 5-7), calls us to virtuous living. Now the key to understanding this verse is contained in the phrase “must be perfect”. The Lord is clear that growth in goodness is a non-negotiable. RESPECT LIFE & FAMILY

The CCC (2258) teaches: "Human life is sacred because

from its beginning it involves the creative action of God

and it remains for ever in a special relationship with the

Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life

from its beginning until its end: no one can under any

circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy

an innocent human being." This is the common thread

which runs through all of the life issues.
