One of the many things that we believe sets the Peters & Mayteam apart is the professionalism and dedication shown fromthe moment they pick up the phone to handle your enquiry. This professionalism and dedication then continues from theday your boat is loaded right through to the final discharge, safely at the required destination. Key to such professionalismis the fact that during load, lift and discharge we use our ownBoat Load Masters directly employed by us to oversee thiscritical stage of the move.

Shane Brearley is one of Peters & May’s Boat Loading OperationsManagers. Shane is 45 years old and has had many years’experience in cargo handling, and he previously worked in 17 Portand Maritime Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps based in Marchwood,UK. He has been with Peters & May for a number of years and wecaught up with him one blustery November day in Southampton toask him about his typical day.

“A Boat Load Master’s job is interesting and varied so a typical day justdoesn’t exist. Every day is different and, as Peters & May carries out liftsand unloads all around the world, we could be sent anywhere atanytime. I recently co-ordinated the transport of race yachts fromValencia to Nice where I was present at both ports, before heading offto Malta to organise the shipment of the 47-ton Leopard 3 to theSydney Hobart Yacht Race in Australia.

“I’m at the port of Southampton today to organise the lift of a 21-metremotor yacht that has come up by sea from the South West of Englandto be shipped out to Taiwan. I will be meeting with her skipper to

discuss positioning alongside prior to lifting the yacht, taking intoconsideration its weight and the weather – and we’ll take extra caretoday in light of the strong wind conditions. With so manyorganisations and individuals involved in this morning’s lift, it is vital wework together as a team to ensure everything runs like clockwork.Timing is crucial and all those involved - suppliers, port personnel, skipper, surveyor and diver - must be in the right place at the right timeand be fully aware of their responsibilities.

“Due to the recent adverse weather conditions, the arrival of theincoming ship has been delayed slightly and we will need to work hardto maintain the tight schedule. In circumstances such as these it’s evenmore important to work closely so we can co-ordinate the nextavailable shipment. I’ll be keeping my customer updated on thesituation as it unfolds.

“I use my available time to visit another berth at the port, where myPeters & May colleagues are busy making preparations for a Med-Caribbean run. They are setting up 18 of our own specially designedcradles which will be loaded onto another ship heading for theMediterranean. Once in Palma the cradles will support customer boats

We pioneered the first shipments of sailing yachts for Sunsail toand from the Caribbean over 10 years ago and soon opened upthe service to individual boat owners. This allowed yachtowners to take full advantage of the seasons, sailing in theSolent or the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbeanin the winter. The service is still running on the same routes tothe same schedule today.

We offer two main routes: from the UK and the Mediterraneanto St. Thomas in November and return in May. We can offeralternative sailings throughout the year to and from variousdestinations in the Caribbean but the scheduled service is thesimplest and most cost-effective as it is dedicated to yachtowners. Due to the nature of sailing, the busiest route is thereturn leg from the Caribbean after the winter season. Shippingsaves crew time and owners taking extra time out of a busyschedule as well as wear and tear on the yacht. To make it mucheasier for customers with time constraints, we can also organisea professionalskipper to collectand deliver theiryachts to and fromthe ship.

We have a dedicateddepartment that isresponsible fororganising allshipments to andfrom the Caribbean, making it simple foryacht ownersplanning to spendtheir summer seasonin the UK orMediterranean, andwinter in theCaribbean. For moreinformation, pleasecontact your localPeters & May office.

Whether a yacht needs shipping home froma remote part of the world, or there is an urgent delivery of parts needed,Peters & May just make it happen. In line with our policy of creatingpartnerships of real benefit to our competitors wewhole-heartedly welcome Peters & May to the event,”enthuses Josh Hall, Race Director of the GlobalOcean Race 2011-12.

being shipped over to the Caribbean for the season. After I’m happythat all has gone smoothly, I return to await the arrival of the ship forthe 21-metre motor yacht. Due to her size and the vessel carrying her, this yacht is to be lifted to the quay first before loading to the vessel.

“I have a meeting with the container terminal’s Operations Managerand we confirm what equipment will be used and how to lift the motoryacht. The Peters & May surveyors and diver are on hand to start co-ordinating the lift.

“When the skipper comes alongside, I board the yacht and direct thepositioning of the slings that will lift her from the water into thepreviously prepared cradle. Clear communication with the diver in thewater and the port stevedores is vital to ensure that she will be safelyand securely lifted. Once lifted from the water, I direct the stevedores tolower her onto the cradle. The lifting and cradling process takes abouttwo and a half hours in total and throughout the operation thesurveyor observes and takes photos to ensure there is a visual record ofeach step of the move; it is hard work!

“Once she’s safely on land in her cradle, I give her a final check andsecure her in place. We then lash and secure the yacht in place and thesurveyor makes his final checks before the yacht is plastic covered byour cover team. Later that evening the motor yacht and cradle are liftedagain directly onto the deck of the ship for the next leg of her journey toThailand.

“Once I am happy with thesafe and secure completion ofthe job it is usually time forbed - or I will return to theoffice in Eastleigh to completeand file the necessarypaperwork. We also have tore-stock the vans and checkour equipment in preparationfor the next day’s lifts.”

The Caribbean season is upon usonce more and we have beenshipping many yachts to the WestIndies for those customers looking toescape the European winter, enablingthem to really get the most out of the boatingcalendar. Our most recent sailing included over20 yachts in a single shipment to the Caribbean.

When choosing a company to move your boat, there are things toconsider, but would you ever choose cost over service?

In November we announced our second strategicpartnership in North East Asia with theappointment of 3L-Leemark Logistics Ltd as ourexclusive agent for Taiwan.

3L-Leemark is a worldwide operation in containerlogistics and has a dedicated team that supports itsyacht transportation business. It is thus perfectlyplaced to complement our existing exclusive agentLAP Marine that serves Singapore, Malaysia andThailand. While undertaking ongoing and futurePeters & May business, 3L-Leemark will trade as Peters& May in Taiwan.

Taiwan is a strategic, well-established area which has astrong export market to Europe and the USA so offerssignificant opportunities. To achieve the standard ofservice our customers demand we recognise the needto have solid, professional support from local expertsso are committed to creating strong workingrelationships with the best agencies we can find. We have worked with 3L-Leemark for two years andhave been impressed by the service they offer and theunderstanding they have for our customers’ specific -and often complex - needs.

N E Asian routestrengthened “...delivering

With many non-specialist companies offering lower prices, it may certainly seemattractive, but lack of experience and understanding of the requirements whentransporting boats may result in a much less efficient service. For instance, with thetime-dependent nature of the sailings to the Caribbean each November, it is reallyimportant that you choose a company that delivers a reliable service.

As specialists in moving boats and marine-related equipment, such as sparesfor race teams, we have many years’ experience and, we also know that ittakes considerable care and significant expertise to transport boats, whetherby sea, road or air. That’s why we believe it’s incredibly important that weinvest in specialist equipment and staff to deliver the highest standards anda personal approach to our service. We have a wide range of tried-and-tested shipping cradles to suit all shapes and sizes of boats – and will selectthe right cradle for each individual job.

Our own load masters and surveyorsprofessionally handle the boats to ensure safe arrival at their destination. We also benefit from our own customs experts, who will handle customsclearance, which is complex and varies from country to country. World’s largest privately-ownedcruising catamaran arrives in the UKPeters & May recently shipped the world’s largest privately-owned catamaran, the SY Hemisphere from the USA to the renowned Pendennis Shipyard on the south coast of England.

The shipping of the giant 145ft catamaran has been handled by the Peters & May team,in close co-operation with the vessel’s structural engineers, right the way from itsconception and design to its arrival in the UK, where she will be finished. The loadingprocess which included the placing of cradles, fitting of lifting equipment, the lift itselfand the final lashing down of the catamaran to the ship took 36hours. This was followed by an 8-day transatlantic journey toFalmouth Bay, where she was unloaded at anchorage before beingtugged to the superyacht yard in Pendennis.

Due to the unique nature of the shipment, we created special liftingshoes to spread the 164-ton load and special keel shoes to protectthe keel and keep it in position. Our highly experienced teamunderstands how important these different aspects are in the liftingand transportation process. We are committed to offering bespokesolutions to ensure an entirely safe transit; in this case, for one ofthe world’s most impressive boats.
