In Part 1 you read some sentences and then you rewrite them using a different 

grammar pattern.

You must write one, two or three words to complete the sentence.

Look at the example.

1. Read the first sentence.  What information does it give you about the guesthouse?2. Now read the second sentence.  Does it give you the same information as the first 

sentence?

Part 1Questions 1 ­ 5• Here are some sentences about a guesthouse.• For each question, complete the second sentence so that it means the same as 

the first.• Use no more than three words.• Write only the missing words in the answer sheet.

Example:   0 There is a games room in this guesthouse.This guesthouse .......................... room.

Answer:   0   has a games

Look at Question 1 above.

1. Read the first sentence.  What information does it give you about the guesthouse?

2. Now read the beginning of the second sentence.  How does it begin?

3. How can you complete it?  Write your answer.

4. Check your answer.  Does your sentence give the same information as the first sentence?  Is the grammar correct?

1. The guesthouse is called "Sunshine Cottage".The name ................................ is "Sunshine Cottage".

Exam tip!In this part of the exam you will lose marks if your grammar is not 

correct.  If you are not sure about your answer, write it on the exam paper first and read it carefully before you copy it onto your 

answer sheet.

Get ready for PET Writing Part 1

1. This part is a test of your grammar.  Everything you write must be correct.

2. The second sentence must have the same meaning as the first sentence.

3. There are several different kinds of changes that you have to make.

Find words with the opposite meaning:

Britain is an island, so everywhere is near to the sea.

Britain is an island, so nowhere is far from the sea

Change the order of the words:

Never walk in the desert without taking water with you.

Take water with you if you're going for a walk in the desert.

Change the tense of the verb:

I became a geography teacher five years ago.

I have been a geography teacher for five years.

Change reported speech to direct speech:

The geography teacher asked if they wanted to watch a video.

The geography teacher said, "Would you like to watch a video?"

Make a passive sentence into an active one:

Yesterday, our passport photos were taken by a photographer.

Yesterday, a photographer took our passport photos.

Change the way you compare two things:

My suitcases are heavier than my brother's.

My brother's suitcases aren't as heavy as mine.

Remember you may have to write one, two or three words in your answer.  Never write more than three words.  Contractions (eg. don't, I've) count as two words.
