Pesentation of action group research:

Sustainable forestry in a changing climate

Cecilia Akselsson

Sustainable forestry in a changing climate

• Overarching aim: To make BECC an important actor in Sweden for research about sustainable forestry connected to climate change

• Number of participants: many• Meetings in connection to forest cluster meetings• Outputs where the AG contributed: overview of

BECC forest research, seminars, policy briefs, working paper (on scenarios), input to policy documents, mapping of C-sink in Nordic countries

Aims of the action group (all related to stakeholder interactions)

• To create a common platform for forest related research in BECC and related programs

• To identify areas where we need to improve• To increase stakeholder interactions• To facilitate communication between social and natural

scientists in the forestry field• To do synthesis work related to Sustainable forestry

Action groups and collaboration?

• Many participants in the AG meetings (same as on the forest cluster meetings). Everyone working with forests were invited (many!)

• The actual work was performed in smaller groups, different for different tasks.

• Cooperation with other programs e.g. in worshop organisation (Mistra-SWECIA, CLEO)

Results and communication: examples

Stakeholder interactions: •Seminar “Skogsbruk i ett förändrat klimat”, KSLA, Stockholm, autumn 2013 (five talks by BECC researchers, 100+ stakeholders and researchers in the audience)

•“Dikade våtmarker avger stora mängder växthusgaser – hur kan vi minska dessa utsläpp”, Göteborg, autumn 2013 (talks by Åsa and stakeholders,e.g. EPA, Forest Agency)•Policy and research briefs in connection with the seminars

Results and communication: examples (cont.)

Common platform for forest related research & synthesis:•Overview of forest research, identification of missing areas•Working paper on forestry scenarios (together with CLEOand Mistra-SWECIA)•Mapping of C-sink in Nordic countries

Social science + natural science•Internal workshop 2012: Multiple use of forests in a changing climate•Meetings, seminar participation across disciplines•Project on drained organic forest soils in Gothenburg (natural and economic sciences)

Conclusions

• BECC is and actor in the sustainable forestry fieldWe are better prepared for applications, contributions to “remisser”, synthesis reports, etc than before BECC.

• Stakeholder interactions is a suitable task for an AG Ideas for the future: articles to Skogseko/Skogen, excursions, 2-days conference.

• Natural/social science cooperation needs more actionE.g. a common post doc/PhD. Meetings are not enough.

• One action per AG is more effective?!This AG was a bit to broad.
