Barnabe’s employees make the difference“You can only imagine how excited we were to get the call saying we were fi ve-time Platinum winners for 2011,” says Matthew Barnabe, owner of Barnabe’s Independent Grocer in the Perth Mews Mall on Highway 7. ”Since coming to Perth in 2009 with my wife Cressida and our two daughters, Grace and Laura, we’ve been thrilled to be a part of this great community and to get to know so many of you through the store, school and community activities. ”Our Meat department is having a very exciting year, with the launch of our Ontario Corn Fed Beef program. This means almost all of the beef we offer in our store is Ontario grown – it’s not trucked across the continent like some of our competitors’. We have increased our variety of hormone-free and organ-ic meats, and we are also carrying fresh Canadian lamb – cut in-store by our ex-pert butchers. If you don’t see the cut you want, just ask!
”Finally,” says Matthew, ”Our newly expanded Garden Centre across the highway is getting rave reviews. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by, it is almost three times bigger than our old Garden Centre, meaning we’re able to carry a wider variety of plants and shrubs, hanging baskets and con-tainers, as well as your favourite PC products for the garden. Our selection of garden decor this year is second to none, if you are looking for a container for your driveway or a whimsical fi gure for your garden, we’ve got it!”

Our meat department continues to produce the fi nest cuts, butchered in the old style. We cut in-house all of our beef and pork and the majority of the chicken, which sets us apart from other grocers.
The bakery provides a great selection of Arti-san breads baked on-site and highlight our new cake program with a dedicated cake decorator. We also make available frozen buns, bread, croissants, etc., to be baked in your own home. The Bakery carries frozen gluten-free products supplied by O’Dough and Kinnikinnick.
Our deli provides catering for any occasion and offers sandwiches, cheese, fruit, vegetable, shrimp and dessert platters as well as a wide selection of deli meats, cheeses from around the world and delicious salads.

Business is fl ourishing at Hillside GardensHillside Gardens’ business is blooming and growing, and they are extremely pleased with their success as they celebrate 40 years in business.
The family-run Perth business won the Diamond award in both the gardening store and landscaping categories of the Reader’s Choice Awards this year.
“It means there are happy customers out there,” said owner Carol Onion. “That makes me happy.”
Hillside Gardens is located on 313 Wayside Dr. just off of Hwy. 7 in Perth, making it a familiar sight in the com-munity.
The company grows a variety of trees, bedding plants, shrubs and vegetables – all free of chemicals.
“We’ve pretty much eliminated using any chemicals in the greenhouse,” said Onion. “We’ve been learning how to do that in the last 20 years or so, so we’re kind of proud of that.”
Hillside Gardens is a one-stop gardening store, selling
mulch, pots and handmade gardening baskets.
“Planters and baskets have become our specialty,” Onion said.
Hillside Gardens grows all of its plants from seeds instead of ordering seedlings, to ensure each plant is healthy and high-quality.
“We grow our stuff right on site,” said Onion. “We don’t ship in other products to sell.”
Customer service is very important at Hillside Gardens.
“When I hire employees, one of the things I teach them when they’re starting is we want customers to have fun when they’re here.”
It is important to employ staff who enjoy their job and sharing that feeling with the customer, she added.

Emu burgers. Emu Stroganoff. Those are just a couple of dishes on the menu at Fiddleheads Bar and Grill, which also includes fl avourful grilled steak, Atlantic salmon as well as traditional fare.
“We have the best burgers in town,” says Patrick Moore, co-owner and general manager at Fiddle-heads, but he also says that the Ten Ounce Garlic Brushed AAA Striploin is a crowd pleaser.
Fiddleheads won awards in the Readers’ Choice Awards in the following categories: diamond – All-Around Restaurant and Sports Bar; platinum – Pub and Lunch.
Everything on the menu is prepared daily using the chef’s own signature recipes.
“We make it fresh right here,” said Moore. This in-cludes the sauces and even the French fries, which are cut mere hours before being served. Even the Emus are locally raised.
For Moore, the experience of eating at his restaurant extends well beyond what’s on the menu.
“It’s all about making the customer feel like part of the family,” he said.
Fiddleheads, which will celebrate its 12 year anniver-sary this July, boasts four distinct eating areas. There is a pub featuring 20 different kinds of draught beer, a dining hall and even an indoor atrium. A patio over-looks gorgeous Stewart Park, a place so beautiful that couples frequent the grounds.
“That’s where everyone gets married in Perth,” said Moore.
The building is wheelchair accessible, with facilities on the ground fl oor and a ramp to the dining area.
“Our building is set up to accommodate anybody,” said Moore. “We look forward to serving our customers.”

Mapleview’s success on course with two awardsOne look at the breathtaking greens is all it takes to see why Mapleview Golf and Country Club is the Readers’ Choice Award diamond winner for golf course and driving range.
“We are very pleased,” said Jolie Morrison-Rodger, co-owner of the club with her husband, Bill Rodger, and son, Jay Morrison.
She attributes the award to two things: a gorgeous course and incredible service.
“Our course is in beautiful shape,” she said. “It is 18 holes and it’s quite a long course with rolling hills in the back.”

Michael’s Table captures 5 Readers’ Choice AwardsThe mother and daughter team of Penny and Dawn Bell of Perth’s newest restaurant, Michael’s Table, are thrilled to have won fi ve Perth Courier Reader’s Choice Awards. Dedicated service for over 35 years at J.P. BrankinIt’s been the well-known choice of locals since 1970, and now a winner in the Readers’ Choice Awards again.
Mike, John, Lynne and staff are honoured at being selected again by the readers as among the best in plumbing services. The family-owned and operated business picked up the Diamond award for Plumbing.
With 24-hour emergency service that’s second-to-none and friendly, knowledgeable staff, it’s easy to understand why Lynne points to Brankin’s service department as a major reason for picking up the awards.
“We have a great bunch of guys that work here,” she said. “They’re very courteous and, if the customer wants to know something, they’ll sit down and explain it to them.”
Lynne added that some people end up buying a furnace or similar equipment from a store in Ottawa and then they’re told it’s a two-day wait for service; they turn to Brankin’s.
“We have a man on call for plumbing and heating emergencies,” explained Lynne.
Odds are good that if you call for service, one of the guys will be a family member of Brankin’s, too.
After the shop was opened in 1970 by John and Joan Brankin, it has been handed down to John Jr., Michael and Lynne and they’re joined by Jason Carson, Adam Dunlop, Wayne O’Connell, Stefan Deachman, Terry Balfour, Tyler Haughian, Harley Bonneau and Trish Brankin.

Subway gives back to the communityPerth’s Subway restaurant isn’t just a place for a quick sandwich, but a contributing part of the community for the past 20 years.
“We have served the community in many ways,” said Steve Schacher the owner of Subway for the past 14 years.
“We have sponsored many sporting events and teams, including this years OFSCCA Girls Volleyball held at St. John High School and PDCI Athletics, ‘Edu-cation Through Sport’.”
For the past 11 years Subway has provided six-foot party subs for the “Relay For Life.” In the early years we would do six foot party subs, last year we provided six foot party subs and cookies, all baked fresh in the restaurant. Subway also feeds the enter-
tainers at the Stewart Park festival every July.
Steve said that Subway does about six schools within the region, providing healthy school lunches.
“I have seen many students grow over the years, and many are loyal Subway customers and I thank them for supporting us over the years.
