PERSISTENCE

is undertaking a task inspite laborious, wearisome, demanding and burdensome

situations

“Jesus left that place and

went off to the territory near the cities of

Tyre and Sidon.” Jesus

left the land of Israel and Herod’s

jurisdiction to have a quiet respite from the forthright attack from

the Pharisees.

“A Canaanite woman who lived in that region came to him, ‘Son of David! she cried out. Have mercy on me, sir! My daughter has a demon and is in terrible condition”

The woman did not get discouraged. She persisted and fell on Jesus’ feet and cried:

“Help me, sir!”

“It isn’t right to take the children’s food and throw

it to the dogs.” (v. 26, GNT)

The Greek word kunaria used by Jesus were pet dogs, not the wild scavengers (askals) that

roamed the streets.

Abraham Lincoln didn’t give up

Persistence and Perseverance.

While faith is the continuation of reason, its expression is persistence and perseverance. The Phoenician woman had great faith in Christ. That is the reason she was persistent and she persevered.

Saint Augustine gives us this wisdom: “God does not expect us to submit our faith to

him without reason, but the very limit of reason makes faith a necessity.”

The very conviction of our faith gives wings to our persistence and perseverance.

“I consider myself fortunate to be able to suffer a little for a cause (Philippine) that I

believe sacred. I do not accuse myself of any act that humiliates me before my

conscience. I admit that at first I was grieved by the change of my fortune, but

afterward I consoled myself by thinking of others more just and more worthy who had suffered greater injustices and one cannot

make everything run according to his desire. If this is fanaticism, may God forgive me, for however much I search myself I cannot see

it thus.” (Letter to Fr. Pastells, Dapitan, 1 September 1892, Epistolario Rizalino, IV, No.

566. P.38)

“If one concentrates on

one thing and does not get away from

it …., he will possess strong, moving power.”(Ching I, Ishu)

“Allah is with those who patiently persevere.” (Koran

8:46)

“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us –

they help us learn to endure. And endurance develops strength of character in us, and character

strengthens our confident expectation of salvation. And this expectation will not disappoint us.

For we know how dearly God loves, us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

Herman Sherman wrote a Code of Persistence thus:

“I will never give up so long as I know I am right.”

“I will believe that all things will work out for me if I hang

on until the end.”

“I will be courageous and undismayed in the face of

odds.”

“I will not permit anyone to intimidate me or deter me

from my goals.”

“I will fight to overcome all physical handicaps and

setbacks.”

“I will try again and again and yet again to accomplish

what I desire.”

“I will take new faith and resolution from the

knowledge that all successful men and women have had to fight defeat and adversity.”

“I will never surrender to discouragement or despair no matter what seeming
