Periodic Table
• Elements are arrange into rows by increasing ATOMIC NUMBER
• The horizontal rows are called PERIODS and are labeled from 1 to 7.
• The vertical columns are called GROUPS are labeled from 1 to 8 (or I to VIII)
• Elements in the same group tend to have similar properties and act in similar ways in reactions
Alkali metals
Group 1• Have 1 electron in the outer
shell• Very reactive metals• In nature, are always found
in compounds – like salt.• Very soft• Shiny, silver
ALKALINE EARTH METALSGroup 2• 2 electrons in
the outer shell• Metals• White, silvery,
and malleable
Transition metals
We are not going to learn about these elements in this course
HalogensGroup 7• 7 electrons in
the outer shell• Non-metals• Very reactive -
are often bonded with Group 1 Alkali Metals
Noble GasesGroup 8Full outer shell
=8 electronsNon-metalsExist as gasesNot reactive
with other elements
Green squares are metalloids
