Amendment 1Amendment 1

• The first Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America is- Freedom of Religion, press and expression

• Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to

assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

• Right to bear arms

• A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

• Search and Seizure• The people who work for the

government have to have a warrant to search a person’s private residence or office unless it has to deal with probable cause.

• Trial and punishment, compensation for takings

• No one can be held to answer for a capital, or an infamous crime unless a presentment or indictment of the Grand Jury except in charges arising in the land and naval forces.

• Right to a speedy trial, Confrontation of witness.

• In a criminal prosecution, the accused can enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the State and District.

• Trial by Jury in civil cases• In suits at common law, where the

value in controversy can exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved.

• Cruel and Unusual punishment• Excessive bail shall not be required,

nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment required.

• Construction of the constitution• The enumeration in the Constitution,

of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

• Powers of the States and People• He powers not delegated to the United

States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

• Slavery Abolished• Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude,

except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

• Citizenship Rights • The Congress shall have power to

enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

• Race No Bar to Vote• The right of citizens of the United States to vote

shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

• The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by

appropriate legislation.

• Women’s Suffrage• The right of citizens of the United States to vote

shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

• Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
