ZakatThe Third Pillar of Islam
BY: SARA HURYN, LUKE DENSLEY, BROOKE AJAYI, JADE GODDARD
What is zakat and why do Muslims practice it:
Zakat means charity.
Muhammad told people to share their riches with
the less fortunate.
Zakat means purification. Muslims believe your
wealth only is pure and true if you give some of it
away. This helps control greed.
1.
What kind of things does zakat pay for?
Medieval times- constructing public fountains (for
clean water), inns (for travelers)
Now- Soup kitchens, clothing and shelter for the
poor, orphanages/hospitals. Poorer Muslims receive
money to pay for debt.
How much of their surplus wealth are Muslims expected to give to charity?
Wealthy Muslims are expected to share 2.5 percent of
their wealth with their poorer neighbors. They
are encouraged to donate more if they can.

By: Sophie, Jacob, Noah, and Sakura
Siyam is fasting
It is performed during Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar
Encourages Muslims to practice generosity, equality, and charity
Ramadan teaches Muslims self-control and how it is like to be poor and hungry
Muslims try to forgive people, be thankful, and to avoid gossip and bad deeds. Also, Muslims should refrain from swearing, violence, and drinking water during the day.
• Muslims fast from daybreak to sunset
• The last ten days of Ramadan are the days of power
• During the fast, you may not eat or drink.
• You do not have to fast if you are a traveler, sick, elderly, young, or pregnant.

• They perform several rituals
• All these rituals help draw Muslims closer to god
• Hajj is something that promotes both fellowship, and equality
• Draw closer to god
• Dress in all white
• Preformed many rituals such as having to run through passages in mountains
WHAT IMPORTANT SITES DO MUSLIMS VISIT DURING HAJJ
• The Muslims visit three
major locations
• The locations are: Mina,
Arafat, Mecca, and the
K'habba.
• Jihad means “to strive”
• Internal and external struggle to do things that would please God
• “Greater jihad” is the internal struggle to please God
• Jihad is NOT about terror, spreading religion through violence, or harming others, but some believe that it is.
• Qur’an forbids Muslims to force others to convert or to intentionally harm others
Shari’ah Law
• Promotes obedience to Qu’ran and respect for others
• Guides Muslims in their relationships and behavior
• Places actions into five categories (forbidden, discouraged, allowed, recommended, and obligatory (required)).• Ex: Forbidden to eat pork
• Over time, European/Western law replaced shari’ah law at the national level
• Some countries still incorporate shari’ah law into their national law
• Saudi Arabia is a country that uses primarily shari’ah law
