For our final concerts of the season, we present an eclecticmix of secular music. Settings of Shakespeare by VaughanWilliams, Mäntejärvi and Tavener offer a variety of moodsand themes with unusual and imaginative choral writing.

The remarkable Romancero Gitano by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, a collection of Spanish folksongs for choir andguitar, will be performed alongside a newly commissionedwork by Tim Watts, perhaps best known for his searinglypowerful opera Kepler’s Trial. This will be our second world première of the season.

For our Lenten concert, wepresent two contrastingmasterpieces. Swiss composerFrank Martin’s epic Mass for

Double Choir is one of thepinnacles of the choral repertoire:soulful, energetic, rhythmic andachingly powerful by turns.Written in the 1920s, it was notreleased for publication and

performance until someforty years later.Pergolesi’s famous Stabat

Mater, a moving andprofoundly human pictureof a grieving mothercomposed in the finalweeks of Pergolesi’s life, isperformed in its version forfull choir, accompanied bystrings and organ.

Johannes Brahms opens the season for us as we pairhis anguished yet consolatory German Requiem,accompanied by renowned local duet pianistsMaurice and Thanea Hodges, with the passionate andvirtuosic E Minor Cello Sonata, performed by ourMusic Director Graham Walker.

A world première of Stephen Dodgson’s A ChristmasCollection weaves its narrative through our Christmasconcert. Alongside the quirky and imaginativeDodgson, we present familiar carols by Carl Rütti,Mack Wilberg and John Rutter, in a concertguaranteed to provide festive good cheer.

Returning once again to the Church of Our Lady &the English Martyrs, we offer two substantial pieces

perfect for Lent and Passiontide in March. FrankMartin’s epic Mass for Double Choir combinesbrilliance and exuberance with profound and heartfeltyearning, while Pergolesi’s most celebrated sacredwork, his Stabat Mater, is presented in its version forfull choir, accompanied by string quartet.

Spanish folksongs, accompanied by guitar, open oursummer concerts, and we go on to explore settings ofShakespeare’s words by Vaughan Williams and others.We are delighted to continue our commitment tonew music in a commissioned work from Tim Wattsto be performed in this final concert.

After a successful two-year partnership with CPSLMind, we are thrilled to announce Sing Inside as ournew Charity Partner. Through this partnership, wehope to raise awareness of their much-valued work inpromoting and supporting the use of music andperforming arts as a means ofcommunity-building for all who workand live within the prison setting.

Brahms’ German Requiem, thought to be written inmemory of Brahms’ mother, has an air of consolationand repose whilst his Cello Sonata in E Minor is full of contrasts: aprofoundly soulful firstmovement and an apparently“Classical” minuet & trio give wayto a powerful, muscular andpassionate contrapuntalfinale. The GermanRequiem will beperformed in aversion for choirand piano duet,based on Brahms’ own arrangement of the work.

There will be a retiring collection for localcharity Blue Smile, which provides expertone-to-one psychotherapy to childrenage 3-13 using the arts and play.
