PP: So, we’re back at the 360 Fabrication shop, and if there is one thing that is standing out, it’s the sheer number of cars overflowing each department, so business must be good.

Rick Francoeur: Well, business is actually up over 53 percent from this time last year and we’re expecting that to increase by the same amount next year. There’s definitely a lot of cars coming through the shop right now; we’re up to 40 employees at the moment and we’re almost thinking that we might have to start up shift work pretty soon.

PP: That is amazing. I remember when you moved into the new shop a few years ago in the height of the financial downturn which was a huge risk. So it seems like if you build it, people will come.

RF: I think our reputation, our timelines, our price....we are well known for building projects on tight budgets. We can offer the customer the whole package right here at a rate of speed, quality and price that others can’t match. There’s no doubt that moving into the shop here has allowed us to compartmentalize each stage of the development of a build and it gives us a huge step up on the competition.

PP: It’s quite an operation here, much more advanced than your average hot rod shop. How have you evolved the business to get where you are today?

RF: Well, its all about setting the pace. If you are trying to chase somebody, that’s all you are going to do is just chase. Daryl and I are the kind of guys who don’t stop; we have the technology, the whole shop is completely automated, which means every tech station has the ability to know everything they need to know about the project in front of them. How much time they have to work on the car, what they need to do and what has already been done. We also have a state-of-the-art database that can tell me how to do just about any kind of job

that needs doing.

PP: Well, it sounds like you have a real corporate business operation going on here. Sounds like you’ve made a lot of investments to make everyone’s job easier and more efficient.

RF: Absolutely, we have all the state-of-the-art equipment here and there are a lot of company meetings to ensure everything is running smoothly and to make little tweaks when necessary to improve efficiency. We’re always striving to make the company better, to be trend setters. Then there is our staff; everyone here is fully certified in their field, and they don’t get distracted with other departments, making them all specialists. Our audio department has now reached masters status as well, making us one of only such 13 locations in the country. Then there are all the other departments that are equally capable - the upholstery, fabrication, mechanical, body and paint departments, and even the CARSTAR bodywork shop that also specializes in custom and classic car repairs.

PP: There is a massive variety of work being done, everything from a set of GTOs sitting out front, a Nissan Cube show vehicle, a Lamborghini Gallardo to a Ford Bronco 4x4. What makes you guys so popular to such a wide variety of enthusiasts, some of whom don’t get along too well?

RF: You know, we go to a lot of shows, and do a lot of travelling, and it seems most people are starting to know who we are. Right across the country people are becoming familiar with the 360 logo. And that all has to do with word of mouth, and people who are pleased with the work that we have done for them. Our staff are very versatile and able to adapt to any project put in front of them, and that gives the customer confidence in our abilities. The product that we build is then a business card for our shop

PP: I should think so; I even noticed a classic old float plane hanging from the rafters in the body shop. What’s that all about?

RF: That would be Daryl’s Grumman that will be completely restored with a full digital glass cockpit and 700 hp that should rip itself out of the water and climb 2,000-feet a minute. His background is Aircraft Engineering, so that’s his special project that will help showcase just what the shop can do.

PP: So you’ve managed to grow in an environment that has seen many of your competitors fall; are you planning to make 360 Fabrication bigger, or are you happy at the position you currently hold in the market?

RF: I think the future is looking fantastic; that’s what I really honestly believe. I think we’ve barely got our engines running yet, that’s what I believe. We have some pretty big, aggressive plans for the company in the future and I don’t perceive anything slowing us down. So keep an eye on us as there are big things to come.

Fountain Classic Cruise

The 2nd annual Fountain Classic Cruise will go August 12th from 10am to 3pm at the Fountain at Goldstream Village in Langford,

BC. Registration is free, but space on the cruise is limited and the

first 70 cars registered will receive gift bags, each with a value of over $50. On-street entertainment will be put on by Q Radio and The Zone Radio, and sponsor tents host art galleries and gift shops. Awards at the show include best paint, people’s choice, participants choice, motorcycles, mayor’s pick, and major sponsors’ pick, plus there will be a draw for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with the proceeds supporting Muscular Dystrophy.

Edmonds City Fair & Classic Car ShowOn Sunday July 22nd, the 3rd running of the Edmonds City Fair & Classic Car Show will take place on Edmonds Street in Burnaby, B.C. between Kingsway and Mary Avenue from 10am to 2pm and is open to all classic and collectible cars. The event has something for everyone, as there will be a street festival from Canada Way to Kingsway with an International fair, talent show, a petting zoo, and carnival rides. There will also be two stages set up for live entertainment at Kingsway and at Humphries Avenue.

Rock’n August WeekThe 16th annual Rock’n August will take place from Tuesday, Au-gust 7th through Saturday August 11th in St. Albert, Alberta, just

outside of Edmonton. Last year ’s event saw 546 classic cars enter the show and over 50,000 specta-tors attended. Not only is the city of St. Albert excited each year to host its out-of-town guests, but it is especially proud of the enormous sup-port the event gives the Alberta Diabetes Foundation. Also, new to this year ’s event is a Father’s Day soap box derby on St. Vital Avenue.

100 Mile House Hot July Nights Car & Bike Show100 Mile House’s Hot July Nights goes Friday, July 13th through Sunday July 15th in different locations throughout 100 Mile House. On the Friday from 5-9pm at the A&W, there is a pre-registration, which is at no cost, for Saturday’s Show ‘n Shine, family fun, en-tertainment, as well as prize giveaways. On Saturday, the Show ‘n Shine takes place at 1pm-5:30pm with entrants showing up first at 10am at Centennial Park. Once the Show ‘n Shine awards are presented, there will be draw prizes, entertainment and live music by Sidetrack, as well as a Poker Walk around town. KMS Tools Show & ShineThe KMS Tools Show & Shine will run for the 17th time on the day before Father’s Day, Saturday, June 16th from 9am-3pm at the KMS Coquitlam location. They are expecting upwards of 200 clas-sic, modified, and custom cars to attend. In addition to checking out all of the cool cars, spectators are able to enjoy a live band, drill-powered go-kart races, product demos, a root beer chugging contest, kids colouring contest, and FREE smokies and pop. Along with all of this, there are also thousands of dollars in prizes for exhibitors and spectators.

Jellybean AutoCrafters Canada Day Open HouseThe 7th annual Jellybean AutoCrafters Canada Day Open House will have an expected 200-300 cars participating in the event. In the past, Jellybean would have an open house followed by a cruise and then Show & Shine at the Langley Speedway, but this year they’ve decided to change things up a bit. The cruise will now include a few local car tours that will be spread out through-out the day allowing participants to enjoy some beautiful roads and sights during their cruise. In 1956, a Ford Thunderbird was the car to have, Elvis Presley’s hips were the subject of much controversy, and a gallon of leaded gas would cost you a whopping 23 cents. And if you happened to live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, you were treated to the opening of the first A&W restaurant in Canada. Quite possibly still the best thing to

have ever happened to Winnipeg, the day that first A&W opened its doors on Portage Avenue would end up giving way to a fast food franchise that would grow to become one of the most successful, and unique, in Canada.Although much of the iconic brand’s suc-cess can be linked to its exceptional and

continued focus on the Canadian market (A&W’s Canadian operation was divested from its American counterpart when the Canadian branch of the operation was pur-chased by Unilever in 1972), if there’s one thing the Burger Family’s brand is associated with, it must be the drive-in. Having been borne into the golden era of the American automobile by brown-and-orange-clad car-hops, A&Ws across the United States and Canada were ubiquitous with Friday nights out on the town, when young baby boom-ers would take to the streets in everything from newly-minted, small-block-powered ‘57 Chevy Bel Airs to then-affordable (now not so much) ‘38 Packards. Filling the same role as cellular phones and social media sites do now, drive-ins like A&W became social hubs, where young men would convene on warm nights to talk about cars, show off to girls, and set up late night drag races. There were no reservations, nor plans, and if you arrived at one drive-in only to find the parking lot empty, it was a simple matter of cruising down to the next one to find the social scene. Typified by such movies as American Graffiti, it’s become

a time that many recall with fondness, an age of innocence, and a time that’s sure never to be forgotten.

But there can be no denying the passage of time, and just as the carhop slowly found herself being replaced by the squawking speakers of the modern drive-through, so too did hundreds of A&W restaurants across Canada find themselves in a freshly competitive market driven by larger, cheaper menus that emphasized conve-nience over an enjoyable experience. The generation that met their friends at the local A&W in the ‘50s and ‘60s became the same generation that tossed their kids into ball pits in order to gain a few minutes respite from the pressures of parenthood in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Although A&Ws may have vastly outnumbered McDonalds in 1970, the incredible expansion of brands like Ronald McDonald’s forced a dramatic re-imagining of the A&W brand. The result of that rethink? None other than the famous Great A&W Root Bear and his iconic tuba solo, officially entitled “Ba-Dum, Ba-Dum,” and played by Vancouver-based jazz musician Sharman King. For anyone so inclined, by the way, the song is available as a single released by now-defunct Attic Records, cheekily credited to none other than one “Major Ursus,” and can also be heard on A&W’s own website.

After just over two decades under the Unilever brand, A&W’s man-agement purchased the national operation in 1995, and set about

retooling the company yet again to include some of its chief iconog-raphy from years gone by. Recognizing that those same customers that remembered carhops and cruising so fondly would be the same ones most inclined to return to A&W restaurants, they moved away from the teal and pink-adorned drive-through format and rebranded every restaurant in the familiar orange and brown colour scheme reminiscent of the carhop service of the ‘50s and ‘60s. And while the reintroduction of the popular, and equally familiar, Burger Family ensured a menu that was beyond reproach, it would be the launch of A&W’s Cruisin’ the Dub events that really brought the restaurant’s old cruising scene back to life.

Intended to give A&W’s 21st century patrons a taste of the carhop age that saw A&W become the most popular fast food restaurant around, the Cruisin’ the Dub program began in earnest just five years ago, but has roots spanning back twenty to thirty years with certain franchisees that took the initiative to host cruise-in events individually. Now hosted by over 200 locations across the country, over 800 car clubs partici-pate in weekly Cruisin the Dub events, with some locations boasting

absolutely amazing attendance figures. Setting the all-time record, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia’s A&W on the perfectly-named Pleasant Street hosted over 1,500 cars on a single day last year.

But what is perhaps the best part of the Cruisin’ the Dub program is its ability to give local car enthusiasts a place to do exactly the same things they would have done in 1955: meet, talk shop, and enjoy some fine automobiles. Many Cruisin the Dub attendees may be old enough to remember a time when service came with a smile and a pair of rollerskates, whilst others’ fast food memories might be a bit more ball pit-centric, but each event is friendly, relaxed, and incredibly social. There are no particular cars, brands, or ages featured at any of the Cruisin’ the Dub events; Cobra Jet Mustangs find themselves alongside Acura Integra Type-Rs and Dodge Vipers while octogenar-ians argue the merits of downdraft Webers to enthusiasts more familiar with direct injection than carburetion. And if that’s not enough reason to check one out, perhaps your chari-table side will prevail on August 23rd, when A&W will host its annual

Cruisin’ for a Cause event. Raising money for multiple sclerosis, a disease that’s tragically overrepresented in Canada, the event pairs A&W’s famous cruisin’ events with an equally great charity, and takes place at every A&W restaurant nationwide. Sending the Multiple Scle-rosis Society of Canada $1 for every Teen Burger sold, A&W raised over one million dollars for the cause last year, and is committed to increasing that figure this year to help fight a disease that will, in some way or another, touch the lives of half of all Canadians. But the charity doesn’t stop there, with individual franchisees stepping up to the plate for other causes. The aforementioned well-attended Dartmouth event last year paired a day of Cruisin’ the Dub with what the organizers had originally called the “Drive for 500” (for that was their initial goal for attendance) in support of local community centres. If you plan on making it to that one this year, though, you might want to get there early; they’re expecting over 2,000 cars to show up!

In an era when yoga pants reign supreme and even the mightiest of fast food chains find themselves striving to find the next big thing, A&W’s efficient and wildly successful Canadian operation has proven that perhaps that next big thing is actually just a great old thing with modern twist. With 754 locations across Canada, A&W is now the second largest fast food retailer in the country, impressively besting even its American-backed rivals Burger King and Wendy’s. Pair-ing the nostalgia of Cruisin’ the Dub-type events with the modern conventions of free WiFi, recyclable food baskets, and touch-screen ordering kiosks, A&W’s experience in Canada proves that you can have your cake... actually, make that a root beer float, and eat it too. And although you probably won’t see a carhop skating around your local A&W’s parking lot, what you will find at any of the Cruisin’ the Dub events is a great collection of cars, a better collection of people, and some darn fine food.

The Mopar brand will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2012. Mopar, a contraction of the words MOtor and PARts, was officially

trademarked in 1937 and started as the name of a single product - anti-freeze. Today, Mopar is in 120 different countries and continues to build on its reputation for top quality, trusted service and high performance.

The Mopar brand came to be at a 1937 meeting of the Chrysler Parts Corporation’s Activities Council where the committee mulled over a list of names for Chrysler’s anti-freeze product, until finally settling on Mopar. Mopar eventually became a brand name

for most Chrysler parts and eventually evolved into the name of the parts business itself. It became officially attached to the Chrysler parts organization in the late 1960s, when Chrysler created an aftermarket business unit named the Mopar Division.

Mopar Celebrates its 75th Anniversary

The brand took on an ex-panded meaning in the 1960s with the advent of high-performance “package cars” based on the 1962 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Belvedere. Also in the ‘60s, the Max Wedge and Hemi Super Stock package cars, as well as altered-wheel-base funny cars, were in-troduced, causing racers and enthusiasts to begin to call these cars Mopars, and a new car culture began to emerge. The last pack-age cars of the ‘60s era appeared in 1968 with the Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda Hemi Super Stock cars whose legacy is carried on today in NHRA competition.

Mopar introduced a line of special parts for super stock drag racers, which continued to expand throughout the 1970s and 1980s as the Mopar Direct Connection line of parts. Eventually, the brand’s performance parts business developed into the Mopar Performance Parts division in 1987 with the goal of improving speed and han-dling for race and road use.

Today, Mopar continues to build on its success with a number of milestones and innovations achieved in recent years. In November of 2008, Mopar reintroduced the package car with the 2009 Mopar Challenger Drag Pak, and continued with a 2010 version that featured a 512-cubic inch V10 monster. 2010 also saw a historic first, with Mopar’s first-ever version of a production Chrysler Group vehicle, the Mopar ’10 Challenger.

Throughout its 75 years, Mopar has always been on the leading edge of technical advancement. This was made evident by the recent industry-first introductions of smartphone vehicle informa-tion applications, electronic owners manuals, and an interactive vehicle tracking device that can send the owner a text when the vehicle is driven too fast or too far.

Mopar continues to play a very important role in the success of Chrysler Group by reflecting the brand’s strength and heritage. Mopar’s global portfolio includes more than 500,000 parts and ac-cessories and is the source for all genuine parts and accessories for Chrysler Group and Fiat S.p.A. brands.

Nowhere does the confidence of word of mouth count more than in the automotive field, an industry full of shops with flashy show cars having bolt-on parts to lure unsuspecting customers in, giving up their pride and joy to someone who thinks bondo solves all the world’s problems. It is this very reason why it is so refreshing to see Egbert’s full of well-educated customers who are there because they know they have the best people taking care of their prized possessions. Gary Egbert, the shop’s founder, comments, “All our customers do a lot of research before even contacting us; they talk to other car guys and they find out about us through these channels.” For most shops, attending car shows, running specialized events and advertising in all the right places is the best way to market their product. However, Egbert’s doesn’t attend many shows; they have found popularity through the words of their customers.

They have gained this reputation due to their willingness to do more labour-intensive and knowledgeable work that requires a more skilled and experienced hand than the other guy. When you’ve been in business for over 20 years, you know what you’re doing. When you have skilled hands that have been with you just as long, you have something

special. In the shop you will find Doug Anderson, a longtime employee who’s been a part of the company since its inception, working the metal of a particularly challenging ‘56 GM panel truck. The truck arrived with accident damage and a massive amount of rust, requiring the large panel sides to be completely remade by hand.

The size of the panels is what makes this a challenging and impressive project. Both sides of the truck need rebuilding and he’s hand-making every panel, crafting the truck from the ground up. Working the lips from the front fenders into the rear arches, Doug, with help from fellow shop employee, Paul Bernard, makes use of the shop’s eight-foot brake and several other old-school metalworking tools to crease, round and shape the large panels to a perfect fit.

They say the devil is in the details, and in a crowd of popular customs, it is work like this that makes Egbert-built vehicles always stand out. Egbert’s takes just as much care and consideration with unique little details that make the cars they build just that little extra bit special than those around them.

“Not every car that comes into our shop is a big money project; however, every car that leaves here receives the highest level of work and detail. It’s little details and trim that make the difference between a custom car, and a great custom car,” says Gary.

Whether it’s just straightening out some warpage, or totally welding in large sections, they can save those expensive investments that are so critical to a vehicle’s look and operation.
