Welcome to the 2013 Spring edition of the Performance and Exhibition Calendar. With

this exciting schedule of performances, screenings, exhibitions and lectures we continue to celebrate with pride the outstanding work of the students, faculty, and staff of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication. The calendar includes the performance schedule of the Great Hall in the Valley Performing Arts Center. During the Spring semester, the Valley Performing Arts Center concludes its second season as the artistic commons of the San Fernando Valley. In its first full season the center became an extraordinary teaching laboratory and academic center for the Mike Curb College, accelerating the learning and professional growth of our students. The Center features not only performances of the Department of Theatre in the Experimental Theatre, but also houses performances of the Music Department ensembles in the Great Hall. In addition, the Center is the home of a new distinguished speaker series.

In its second season the series explores the role of creativity in contributing to commercial success. The Commerce of Creativity: Distinguished Speaker Series will feature Mike Curb College alumna Sue Herera (Journalism, ’81) CNBC television reporter and anchor in financial journalism. The College continues to

excel as one of the largest and most comprehensive arts schools in the nation, serving students pursuing degrees in the six areas of the Visual Arts, Cinema and Television Arts, Communication Studies, Journalism, Music, and Theatre. In addition, the College hosts more than 250 performances, exhibitions, and screenings each year, as well as producing an extensive menu of educational outreach programs in the community. Because some of our programming is scheduled on short notice to take advantage of opportunities to work with visiting artists or to respond to unique and exciting curricular opportunities, please check our website, www.csun.edu/amc, for frequent updates.

The Mike Curb College campus footprint provides excellent instruction and creative research facilities. Our performance spaces include the Campus Theatre and Recital Hall, the Little Theatre and Experimental Theatre, which are the home of dozens of performances created by Theatre, Communication Studies, and Music. The Art and Design Center and the Valley Performing Arts Center house the Art Galleries. The exhibition schedule includes innovative and challenging shows throughout the year. The 500-seat Plaza del Sol Performance Hall is the home of the majority of the large ensemble performances produced by the Music Department.

During the 2011-12 academic year the new Valley Performing Arts Center was added to the College footprint. The Great Hall of the Center is the home in the 2012-13 season of a series of exciting artists organized into seven series and marquee events. Artists range from Kris Kristofferson

to Deborah Voigt, from the BBC Concert Orchestra to the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, from Mark Morris Dance Group to the Ballet Folklórico de Mexico. The Center, which includes a 1,700 seat Great Hall, a 156-seat Experimental Theatre, classrooms, laboratories, rehearsal space, and offices, is rapidly becoming the new performing arts destination of the region.

Thank you for your continued support of our programs. We hope you will join us often during the 2013 Spring Season and that you will share our excitement about the hundreds of ways this remarkable College and Center contribute to our redefinition of the life of the arts community on the campus and throughout the entire region.

Opening Reception, 4-7 pm Main Gallery, Art and Design Center

This is the first comprehensive exhibition of Leonard Edmondson’s drawings, paintings, and prints in Southern California. An influential artist from the post WWII era, Edmondson was an artist and educator throughout his long career, exploring an aesthetic vocabulary that invoked “almost remembered” forms, feelings and spaces. He was equally concerned with content and form, writing, “My painting is not an art of rebellion, but one of discovery and sharing.” This exhibition includes a large selection of exceptional etchings from his 1967 retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Art and many rare drawings and paintings from his early career. A special side gallery exhibition, “Leonard Edmondson and his Circle,” features works by artists with whom he shared his lifetime of discovery, including Walter Askin, Shiro Ikegawa, Ynez Johnston, and Peter Voulkos.

Armer Theater, Manzanita Hall, Rm 100, 7 pm In the devastating first film of Kieslowski’s Three Colors trilogy, a woman reels from the tragic death of her husband and young daughter. More than just a blistering study of sorrow and grief, Blue is also a tale of liberation and a transcendent sensory experience.

THE 56TH ANNUAL TEENAGE DRAMA WORKSHOP JUNE 17– JULY 28, 2013

The Teenage Drama Workshop (TADW)is a six-week intensive workshop for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in theatre. Through the program, students receive intensive training in the areas of acting, dance, and voice, or technical theatre arts (costume, stagecraft, lighting and sound).

The Teenage Drama Workshop is the longest running workshop of its kind in the nation. The faculty and staff are members of the CSUN Theatre department, experienced secondary school drama teachers and theatre professionals.

Auditions for this workshop will take place on two Saturday mornings in June. Along with the exceptional classes in acting, voice, dance, and electives, TADW will produce two shows to once again provide teens with a challenging acting opportunity.
