The story so far 2010This year has been one of intense activity as our customers begin to feel the effects of budget restrictions on healthcare spending. The impact is not identical, each country has its own way of dealing with the pressures from demographic changes, rising client expectations and spending cuts.

The impact of spending cuts will be to delay service delivery to a growing market resulting in a pent-up demand and increasing dissatisfaction with state-funded services.

There is clear evidence from many countries that the impact of this is to encourage clients to seek products and services from the private sector for which the Industry, generally, is totally unprepared both in service provision and product design.

But not every company…

V-TrakOur concept of multi axis hardware provides the opportunity for precise positioning of trunk support in relation to the seat.

Because of this unique feature, V-Trak hardware is now being used in situations we never previously imagined, systems sometimes being installed without the supervision of a suitable qualified technician. This is not a breakdown of the market but a natural development and extension of it. As a result, continuous improvements in design and guidance are being made to ensure suitable and safe installations in these developing markets. For established professional users, these changes make life simpler and easier.

We also recognise the opportunity for simpler, lighter, more elegant systems where possible so we now offer an alternative hardware system called V-Trak Lite.

Axxis For 10 years, and for many demanding seating specialists, the AXXIS range, together with the V-Trak hardware has been their workhorse for customised seating.

From the original concept in 1996 there have been many advances in both function and durability.

Axxis development The current generation of AXXIS backrests contains all the structural and raw material improvements made in response to market feedback from 20 countries over many years.

The next generation Axxis shell is now manufactured from Nylon and is clearly distinguished by the grey colour. This represents a further increase in strength and durability and is being introduced during the next few months. Rigorous analysis and pre-production testing confirms the greatly enhanced strength and performance of these shells.

Clip on Foams A further advance is the introduction of clip-on foams. Foam interiors were previously fixed permanently to the AXXIS shell with adhesive. This meant that if the foam became contaminated or damaged, the shell could not be re-issued.

This problem is now eliminated as replacement foams can be ordered and supplied as spare parts.

This improvement will now become evident over the next few months as new stock becomes available.

NYLON AXXIS SHELLS

New cover material The original cover fabric for backrests and accessories was chosen for its strength, durability, fire resisting properties, and the ability to attach Velcro type fasteners. However, being made of Nylon, it tended to attract dust, hair and other material so it was not an easy fabric to maintain.

After exhaustive searches and trials, the standard fabric has now been changed. The new fabric (MFC) meets all the required standards but also has a urethane backing which prevents the ingress of moisture and contaminants. The outer surface has better tactile qualities and the whole appearance of the backrests is improved.

Wipe down, water resistant covers are now available for every backrest and individual segment by making the covers with the urethane surface as the outer surface.

EVO CRASH TESTING

X-Tend Headrest interfaceOne of the most challenging aspects of seating is precise positioning of the headrest. X-Tend was developed as a revolutionary approach to this persistent and poorly served problem. Using a double ball mechanism to provide stepless positioning at the mounting end and at the headrest pad, and built-in extension for varied reach, this combination revolutionises the process of establishing and fixing the correct head position.

The interface and headrest can be installed and adjusted with a single tool – a 4mm Key Wrench (supplied)

The system has been fully crash tested to ISO standards.

Quick release: The unique quick release mechanism allows instant release with only a 5mm movement of the headrest mount making it simple to substitute headrests for different purposes or occasions without any disruption to the user.

The Quick release mechanism can be supplied separately as a retro-fit item or supplied as original equipment.

The X-Tend system has completely transformed the options available to seating professionals as it can be used with virtually any seating system besides V-Trak and is interchangeable with third party headrest pads using a 1” ball mechanism with 3 peripheral screws.

Tetrixx HeadrestsTo take advantage of the new X-Tend interface, PHP has increased its range of headrests. It continues to offer its original range of universal headrests (HSAW, HS AWL and HS AC) but also with the X-Tend interface as an option, in either fixed or quick release format.

The Tetrixx range includes 5 new tailored headrests which offer sub-occipital support in paediatric and adult sizes.

These headrests are adjustable in neck radius and have diligently researched internal profiles to ensure a supremely comfortable fit.

Another unique feature is the extended and adjustable lateral wings which can be positioned precisely to provide support for the cheek/neck/jaw. These can also be removed individually to provide one sided support.

The five new headrests cover most of the popular requirements. When used with the X-Tend, the possibilities are infinite.

New V-Trak Lite hardwareAlthough the original V-Trak hardware provides exceptional adjustment to cater for the most extreme positioning requirements, not everybody needs or uses this extreme provision. For may users, weight is an important priority and any reduction in weight is especially welcome. V-Trak Lite was designed to address these issues.

Compatible: V-Trak Lite uses the same mounting blocks as V-Trak Original but is designed principally for use on round section canes. In this way, it retains the same adjustment in all planes but the range of movement is less for forward/rearward movement at 80mm.

Smarter: The design is compact and elegant and available for wheelchair widths from 9” to 19” .Bariatric versions are under development. The lower visual impact is even more apparent when multiple segments are used in paediatric cases. The slimmer and uncluttered profile makes the installation more acceptable.

Simpler: V-Trak Lite can be installed and adjusted with a single tool – a 5mm Key Wrench.

Just as versatile: V-Trak Lite can be used with all V-Trak backrests and with any custom backrests with or without the standard V-Trak rear fixing track.

And just as safe: V-Trak Lite has been fully crash tested to ISO standards.

New EVO Backrests With the pressure on healthcare budgets, it is important to provide less expensive products which continue to provide the unique positioning capabilities of V-Trak systems but without some of the sophisticated shaping and sizing facilities.

Combined with V-Trak Lite, the new EVO range of backrests provides all the positioning needs for many clients but also a superbly comfortable and lightweight backrest incorporating a breathing spacer fabric for better heat dissipation. This fabric provides an open structure allowing air to circulate freely and avoid unnecessary heat build up All EVO backrests are compatible with backrest extensions, headrests and many other accessories.

For those who require a light, comfortable and perfectly positioned backrest at minimal cost EVO is the right choice. For those who require a little more resilience and a more exciting aesthetic, (EVO+) Plus incorporates foam upholstery and two tone covers with breathable spacer fabric.

EVO backrests can be upgraded to V-Trak Original simply by changing the hardware. Similarly there is a clear upgrade path to Axxis backrests if more complex shaping and sizing is required.

The improved Comfort range The long running positioning and Comfort range of backrests is still the choice for many who need a little more comfort and individual spine profiling. This backrest range comes complete with V-Trak Lite hardware as standard to fit any wheelchair with round section canes. The complete backrest comes with the universal mounting blocks MBR US to suit cane diameters from 19mm (3/4”) to 25mm (1”) The standard cover has now been upgraded to the new urethane-backed MFC cover and combined with the silver grey spacer fabric to produce a pleasing two tone effect and improved breatheability.

The internal foam is now replaceable and simply clips onto the shell. The rear mounting track is now full length and therefore does not need a track extension in order to mount a headrest. The track itself has additional fixing points and is now fully concealed beneath the outer cover providing a more discreet and pleasing appearance.

The backrest is still available separately for use with any V-Trak hardware combination.

Hardware Much of PHP’s hardware is used by seating contractors in the provision of complex seating systems using a variety of techniques including carved foam, Micro modular systems such as Matrix (as shown) and planar systems.

The range of hardware options has now been increased by the introduction of the V-Trak Lite hardware and extra track mounting options.

In addition, pre-machined substrate panels (flat and pre-formed) will shortly be available to suit a range of V-Trak tracks, ready for final shaping, sizing and upholstering.

This will make it possible to construct planar backrests without having to handle large panels which need to be cut down to smaller panels. The pre-machined flat and shaped panels will be available in a number of sizes ready drilled to take a selection of tracks as required.

Once a panel is complete, any V-Trak hardware system can be used to provide all the attachment and positional adjustments required.

V-Care The V-Care project is a cooperative venture between two companies.

Greencare Mobility and Performance Health Products share common objectives in bringing the concept of modularity to Seating and Mobility in a practical and workable format.

The V-Care wheelchair combines the 3 essential elements of seating and mobility provision:

1. The mobility chassis2. The Trunk support system3. Pelvic positioning and pressure management

In doing so, many unhelpful and unwelcome compromises which are current features of seating and mobility provision can be eliminated giving clients and professionals the opportunity to deliver solutions based entirely on client needs.

Working to common holistic standards of design, performance, manufacture and service provision, the combination offers customised solutions within a short timescale. In addition, by combining the features of both seating and mobility at the point of manufacture, the issues of selection, compatibility, compliance and warranties are instantly resolved and the additional costs of installation are eliminated.

The combined product requires only final adjustment to suit the precise needs of the client, thus shortening the time between receipt and handover thereby optimising the use of resources needed for successful issue.

CushionsPHP’s Fulcrum range is available in two forms – CoolFlow and ViscoCombi.

Fully featured with pre-emptive and reactive shaping, cushion location devices, firm edge for transfer and temperature management, these cushions are proving a good choice for clinics who target their funds carefully to achieve high standards of seating provision within strict budgetary limits.

The CoolFlow range incorporates a feature to reduce sitting temperatures naturally, thereby further reducing the risk of ulceration.

The Visco Combi range is a budget version for those who do not require temperature management.

Available in a number of sizes from 10” X 10” to 24” X 20”, the cushions are superior pressure management tools which allow the beneficial redistribution of pressure by adjustment of the footrest height/seat height/angle. Correct attention to these adjustments with the Fulcrum cushion can frequently dramatically reduce the need for much more complex cushions.

2011From its very beginning in 1996, PHP has emphasised the need to minimise the visual impact of any seating equipment and this need will escalate as clients who are used to high standards of aesthetic design in their private purchases increasingly expect this from their seating and mobility equipment – even more so when they take the decision to purchase such equipment privately.

In all new designs, price, appearance and function have to combine to provide products which are affordable, effective and appealing. The compromises clients have been prepared to accept in the past will not be acceptable in the future.

PHP will always aim to produce products which work, not simply products that sell. PHP believes that this policy will ensure a higher quality of seating provision and provide products which sell because they work.

Also, existing products are being continually refined and improved to meet the challenges of a market which will change dramatically over the next few years. For PHP 2011 is the start of a new journey.

Price Lists:As the range of products increases, our price lists need to reflect this and become more user-friendly. The list overleaf is our current product offering and this will be made available as a price list for orders.

The new format will be an illustrated price list showing representative products and clearly defined product groups to help with locating and selecting the components required. It also provides some basic information and guidance on the application of each group of products.
