(I) Marching Drills Command Meaning Timing

Landing Foot/ Remarks

1. Dari Tengah Cepat Jalan Take reference from the centre, quick march

Dari Tengah Cepat Jalan Sequence Timing: Left

1. Right arm shoot out 90 degrees to the front 2. Left arm shoot out 45 degrees to the back. (Lock elbows, keep arms straight

and clench fingers such that thumb is in line with forearm.) 3. Shoot out left leg, landing with heels on the ground first. (Chop, never drag feet)

Timing: Right (Alternating arms and legs)

Take note Marching always starts with left leg and right arm out to the front first. Always remember to swing arm 90 degrees to the front, 45 degrees to the back. Chop your feet. Do not drag your feet/shuffle. (Dig your heels) Glance from the corner of your eye to check if you are in line. Do not turn your

head or look down. Arms & legs should be alternating. (Right Leg, Left Arm. Left leg, Right Arm) Keep back straight at all times. Do not slouch. Lock arms and clench fingers at all times. Your leg follows timing, which means that when timer says LEFT, your left leg &

right arm should shoot out to the front, vice versa. * Shuffle when you are on the wrong leg. * Do mark time when there is an obstacle and no other command is given.

Common Mistakes

Arms are not locked

(VIII) Method of Instruction The steps to MOI for drills.

1. Introduction 2. Formation of Squad 3. Explanation 4. Demonstration 5. Practice

A Drill Instructor must be aware of the proper methods of instruction for drills but this will only act as a guide. A good Drill Instructor must be able to develop her own effective style of instruction (SOI). A good Drill Instructor must be able to command and time all drills sharply and accurately.

Sequence of Command – Words of Command All words of command must be clear and forceful since the way in which they are given affects their reaction. A word of command is divided into 3 parts:

1. Introductory This tells the squad the movement they are about to carry out. e.g. “Move to the right in three” “Bergerak ke-kanan bertiga-tiga…”

2. Cautionary The drawn-out and loud reminder to the squad. e.g. “Right” “Ke-kanan, Pu…”

3. Executive The loud, sharp command. e.g. “Turn”

“Sing!”

1) Introduction Sequence 1. Introduce the command that you are going to teach.

- “The command that I will be teaching you today is…” 2. Describe the new drill to the squad by telling them the command. 3. Spell the command. 4. Explain the meaning (English translation) of the command. 5. Timing of the drill.

Take note Speak clearly with confidence. Be clear of what you are going to teach.

2) Formation of Squad Sequence To be effective in transferring knowledge of drill, the IC should bear in mind two factors

in the formation of squad. a) The comfort of the squad

Minimize the chance of them facing the sun, if needed move them under the shade. Do check on squad welfare.

b) Deploy them in the formation in which they will learn fastest. i. Straight line ii. Semi-circle iii. Three ranks

3) Explanation Sequence Explain what you are about to teach and its importance.

What is the purpose of the drill. In what position can it be executed and in what position it cannot be executed.

Page 17: Perfecting Drills Step By Step Guide€¦ · 1. Resume quick march by shooting out the left leg, landing with heels on the ground first. Take Note The command is given when the right

16

4) Demonstration Sequence 1. Firstly, do a full demonstration with command given.

2. Demonstrate by number, pointing out important details like common mistakes and things to take note.

3. Ask if they have any questions and clarify them. 4. Another complete demonstration.

5) Practice Sequence 1. Let the squad do the drill by number first, then check their faults and correct

them. 2. Then let them try out the full movement of the drill. 3. When a drill is first taught to a squad, the whole squad should be made to call

out the timing loudly and clearly. Every member will know the timing and have it fixed in their heads. The whole squad can coordinate better and execute the drill together.

Note: - You can split the squad into smaller groups to let them try out (especially is the

squad is big). - After that, put the groups together and let them try out the drill as a squad.
